Shooting Long Range

Hey everyone, hope your having a wonderful day. I live in calgary and have been wanting to start doing long range until now I've only shot up until around 3-4 hundred yards. I have been trying to find a spot which is longer and havent been able to is there anywhere you guys know where I would be able to do find a longer range. Thank you

Lots of suggestions here but as a bit of an alternate: 

Try doing .22lr at 200m+ if you want to get a feel for what long range is like without really going down the rabbit hole. 

Get a couple boxes of SK standard/Eley Target/Lapua Biathlon ammo and see which ammo your rifle likes best at 100m and go from there

A base model savage mk2 is more accurate than most shooters are so you can get into it pretty cheap if you don't have a .22 bolt gun. 

Its just an easier/cheaper way to get a similar experience and get your skills built up for longer range shots. 

My base mk 2 is about a 1.5MOA rifle when it's secured in a vice clamped to a bench and with SK Standard ammo btw. The triggers ok out of the box but the bolt and magazines suck are where they really feel cheap. 

My CZ 452 is about 1.1MOA in a similar condition and is a much better experience overall but it's got North of 25000rds through it and I haven't been the kindest of owner to that thing xD

I add 0.5 - 4MOA to my shots depending on shooting position/how I am doing that day as well as a heads up. I am usually near the bottom of the NRL22 competitions I do though so below average shooter for the shooting competition folks.

Honestly the only similarity between the two is you have to adjust your turrets. 22lr at 200m+ will never come close to the neuron activation of slapping steel at 1km+

Ya it's definitely significantly more "brain ticking" to hit things at the longer ranges.

The skills are similar enough between the two. Takes roughly the same amount of time for a .22LR to fly 300m as a 6.5CM goes in 1000m (very roughly).

You have to know how to adjust for and read the wind, you have significant ToF and drop, you need to be able to shoot very steadily, you need to know how to adjust as your barrel warms up, good trigger control, etc. 

Plus I can shoot 500 .22LR for the cost of like 40 of higher calibre stuff using match ammo for both.

This is where I'm starting at, but I sold my savage because I kind of hates it and got a cz 457 lrp instead

I bought the MK2 for my wife and was surprised by it. 

I had an old Lakefield MK2 I inherited but bought a CZ452 to replace it longer than I care to admit ago xD
