Had this for a couple months and ran about five hundred rounds through it. The original pump handles are goofy big but removing the lower one really improves ergonomics and lets you shoot off a bag a bit easier. It also lets your hand do the whole c-clamp thing if that’s your style.

It’s personally hard to justify double the cost to upgrade to the newest thing hitting the market when this has been working great for me personally.

Pump/Straight Pull rifle's are very popular down in Australia. SCSA brought one to market that combines both in a package that cost's around half of what other alternatives do.

Aussies down there can’t have semi auto anything except pistols. You can’t even have pump or semi auto shotguns. All semiautomatic centerfires, semiautomatic Rimfire with 10+ capacity, and all semi and pump shotguns above 5+ capacity are only available to professional pest controllers, dealers, police, etc.

In short, best thing they got to a real ar.

Semi auto Rimfire below 10 rounds and pump/semi shotguns below 5 rounds are still restricted to “primary producers” aka farmers and they still have to justify why they need it 😵‍💫

I mean guns don't help much when the chief threat is tiny venomous critters. Saltwater Crocs are about the only thing you'd really need to shoot there and in my experience you kinda have to go looking for them

My understanding is that there was already more accountability/restrictions (must be a club member, etc) in regards to owning a Pistol even before 1996 which is how civilian ownership was allowed to continue.

An interesting titbit is that when the NFA was being formulated, the government was open to hunting being a valid reason to own a handgun. The main shooting organisation at the time lobbied hard against it at the time however, fearing that it would divert revenue from their Ranges.

I needed something in .223 and the Henry Supreme was sold out everywhere at the time or was heavily marked up on GunPost. I debated the Howa 1500 but have a few bolt guns already.

No one prefers this over an ar15 or any other 556 semi. In case you haven’t noticed, all of the popular semi auto rifles were banned and are currently safe queens.

I don’t prefer it. Just can’t justify jumping on the band wagon for a different coyote gun/range thing right now. It’s more of a “well it does the job” and my son shoots the crap out of it.

Maybe the meme didn’t quite land for you, but Bart isn’t excited in that scene.

You’re in the Canada guns sub bud. You have a handful of options. Taipan, Troy and Renegade are your “AR” options if you’re not into .22

The list of semi auto .223, .300, .308 grows shorter every day. And I’ll say it and get down voted but the SKS is the biggest cope rifle in the country right now. It does the job.

I thought I'd like a pump-action tacticool rifle but it's less fun than what I thought it'd be when I used it. I also noticed that it gets heavy pretty fast once you start adding stuff to it, so I'm pretty sure it's heavier than the stated 6.6lbs before add-ons, likely closer to 7lbs.

I'm eyeing 223 bolt-actions right now instead.

I just tried mine for the first time a few days ago and I really dislike how the "pump" doesn't lock into place (unlike a regular pump shotgun).

Feels very unintuitive

Coming from my 870 shotgun, I got the exact same weird feeling of having no lockup.

For quick shots, I use the front of the magwell as my second hand placement and sliding my hand off the handles once the action is pulled back. Removing the lower handle makes this a ton easier as it has that fat lower lip. The spring slams the bolt forward and I’m already hard-gripped on the chassis by the time it’s in battery.

I put the hook past the pump mechanism to give me something to pull into my shoulder or push against that wouldn’t cause a battery issue. Work arounds for their weird design.

Edit: also, the edges are pretty damn sharp on the remaining handles. You’ll have to give them a light file/sanding to round the new exposed edges.

I've ordered the Skeletonized pump grip from Tommy Enterprises (took forever just to ship) but will be throwing it on this weekend. So it'll be a whole different feel (and also a whole different look which I think is as important 😁). Hopefully it feels a bit more intuitive, but worst case I may just try out your mod.

I can let you know how it goes with the skeleton grip.

I moved my Vortex Venom 5-25x56mm on it for a few trips to see how it grouped at 100yards. Shooting offhand was something with a 3lb scope combined with the rifle’s general weight.

Edit: I actually went through the whole supply chain to see if I could get a second handguard and pump handles I could just cut down. North Sylva, Gravel, and SCSA said ‘no’.

I'm sure you could just cut down the handguard yourself if you're cool with voiding your warranty and some resale value. I thought about that, along with making my own pic rail adapter on the back so I can get a lighter stock for it.

My hope was they’d at least send a few over since they’ve moved onto selling the polymer lower Taipan Evo now. Their reply wasn’t hope inspiring though,

“We've just sent a small batch of spare parts to North Sylva to assist with these issues. We don't regularly sell the handguard as a spare part however will work with North Sylva to see if they would be interested in stocking them.

Ah that sucks.

The weight is a bummer because I also tried running an LPVO on it and that pushed the whole thing to 9lbs. I could "downgrade" to a microprism and shed about a pound, but then I'd have a $500 LPVO for no reason lol.

I'm gonna make it out of hardwood, since it's what I'm familiar with. Might use some aluminum inserts, like where the M1913 rail would screw in. I finished sketching out the design and dimensions, so I just need to get started.

Ah yeah, closer to 2 1/4lbs now that looked I it up. More just saying a LPVO is probably what will end up on this rather than the Venom from my 22LR

They have a newer model (Taipan EVO) with a polymer lower with a better bolt release setup. There’s also a shorter version in Australia that might not get here for a while - Taipan EVO Scout.
