Ditching the buffer tube for 1913 rail shortened the overall length significantly and so did the AK style grip.

Daaamn that’s fuckin sick. Do you need to do any modifications to the bolt carrier or anything or can you just throw it in the chassis and rock n roll?

You need to mod the bolt. There is no way around that as AR (XCR) mags simply can’t clear the bolt width. However , once you mod the bolt you can still use the OEM magazine and wood stock.

I assume this also requires modding the receiver to fit the mags?

From memory the receiver fits the mags just fine. The only reason to mod the receiver is for the aforementioned adapter to be able to install into it. Apparently with OPs chassis this isn't required, presumably because the stock/chassis is where the "adapter" mounts instead of to the receiver.

I bought the TNA Magwell to do mine. Magazine wouldn't make it into the receiver. Opened up the whole thing with a dremel, shaved down the bolt so it fits between the mag lips. Didn't end up going that route so I just put it back to stock.

Factory receiver does not fit the magazine. Clearancing is the receiver is required. The adapter mounts in place of the factory magazine. However, the factory stock does need to be clearanced to accept the adapter.

You gotta give us a run down of the mods here and how they work. Did you cut down the barrel and do a clamp on front sight? How does the mag work with no adapter? Is the chassis printed?

Yes. Barrel is now 18.6” and front sight is something I will be making available in the future. Chassis itself is the adapter as it has correct dimensional geometry for AR mags. I am working on a version that will have swappable magwell for Type 81 mags. This chassis is printed yes, I do have a mill as well so I am making myself one in aluminum.

Honestly this is the best looking sks stock I've seen, and the magazines are the cherry on top! Excellent work!

Bravo. Can I get the 3d print file? This is very similar to what I've been trying to figure out myself.
I'd love to see a version of this that can except AR trigger groups and regular AR grips.
Pearce armory had a stock that did that and it was awesome. It's a shame they never went into production

Problem with AR trigger group is not making the trigger group work, it’s making the OOB safety work. It’s doable but nobody wants the liability

My understanding is the OOB safety is kind of redundant. An AR doesn't have one as far as I understand. And the trigger would not likely strike the firing pin if it was not in battery is my understanding.

AR does not have a free floating firing pin. SKS does. If debris gets into the firing pin channel and obstructs the retraction of the firing pin, OOB kicks in. I would not give my child an SKS without OOB safety so that’s the standard I apply when I build things for others

Fair enough. Could this be overcome by a spring on the firing pin? I know that is an aftermarket part you can buy

Ish. I have a design that works but it’s untested and finicky , you really need to have tight tolerances to make sure it works all the time. Bigger problem for me when I was testing AR trigger and hammer on an SKS was the hammer itself, milspec spring is too soft and gives light primer strikes on surplus ammo half the time

Interesting. I wonder if an stronger spring would work. Or perhaps the the hammers arch isnt at the peak spot?

Yes, it’s possible that the geometry was not right. I will get back to it eventually.

I made one in PETG and one in CF nylon. Heat has not been an issue yet but I am working on a version with a FAL like handguard where I am sure PETG won’t cut it.

Our friend Neumann metalworks makes excellent red dot mounts that replace the rear sight and hold zero. That’s what I will put on.

My design. I will be also making it available. I tried to do it in aluminum but it has a slight zero shift so I need to do it in mild steel.

Thats awesome! This is my favourite sks chassis I've seen yet. Is it 3d printed? If so would you be open to sharing the files?
