News / Politics / Activism Impact of the new liberal government on the future landscape of Canadian gun ownership.
What does everyone think the realistic outlook of this new liberal majority government is in respect to him ownership?
I'm sure there are opinions on both extremes but what is a grounded logical prediction of what the next 3+ years could look like ?
A lot of ownership options and restrictions have already been pushed through so it seems like it's just crumbs left to take away. Certainly I don't think anyone predicts reversals, regardless of the supreme court ruling as a majority government can now pass laws to crystallise their objectives.

Their majority is slim. People do not want the government focused on ideological policy.
If they try and pull funny business we have to be loud and disruptive to our MPs.
Carney has gotten away with claimed ignorance up to this point. But now he alone is responsible.
When CoL crunch starts people will be questioning why Liberal 2nd chance is being used to buy more votes.
57
u/Azules023 Apr 14 '26
I hope you’re right. Too many Canadians are too focused on US politics that our domestic politicians can get away with murder right now.
14
u/No_Front_5315 Apr 14 '26
Do you know if there are any liberal MP's that have strong pro gun Ridings? The way things usually get framed is very binary with conservatives being pro gun and liberals being opposed, but there must be some middle ground that would be key in this debate.

Gun control plays well in urban centers, especially those in Ontario and Quebec.
If you wanted to look at it a different way: the Liberals are anti-gun as political calculus. Their strategists believe they will get more votes by being anti-gun than they will lose.

Exact same can be said about conservatives who'll tell you all about how awful Trudeau was without asking. They make their personality more about hating liberals than actual liberal policies.
6
u/Imaginary-Text4690 Apr 14 '26
He didn’t even say all liberals he was talking about the super anti gun nuts in the major cities in Quebec and Ontario. Like he said fuck you guys. And I’m not conservative by any means either.

My MP. Tons of reserves here and every other dude hunts. Flipped to Liberal last election after Singh self-destructed his party, even though the new MP doesn't live here and barely campaigned.
I've emailed her office about the gun grab and got no response. Not even a boilerplate parroting of Gary and Nathalie's drivel.
4
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Apr 15 '26
I live in one that flip flops as of recently and currently has a liberal MP. I wrote him about the bans and just got a copy paste of the same bullshit media rhetoric coming from the entire LPC.

People complaining is how G46 was stopped. They do not know your personal vote, so turn up the heat. Emailing, calling and letters makes it known it is unpopular.
6
u/AlonzoMosely88 Apr 14 '26
Just to add to what you're saying, there is definitely fracturing in the ranks of the Liberal party. What would happen if a few Liberal MPs stepped down? Would that mean an election?
I think we are in for a rough ride for the next few years and I'm not holding my breath. But I'm trying to find some kind of silver lining in this.
14
u/No_Front_5315 Apr 14 '26
It seems that one silver lining is the gun community seems to be very unified. Hopefully it sticks together and people can support Canadian businesses in the gun space and weather the storm until a chance finally comes or people adapt to the new normal. Either way it seems there's a great community of people who enjoy this sport.
2
u/Braddock54 Apr 15 '26
Probably the best thing to happen in order for the Liberals to be turfed in the trash long term. Now they will have no one to blame but themselves. They will accomplish absolutely nothing just like the last year of Carney.
37
u/mhkhung Apr 14 '26
Realistically there's almost zero chance it will be reversed in the next 5 years.
10
u/xthemoonx Apr 14 '26
To be fair the election was last year so next election would be 3 or 4 years from now
9
u/mhkhung Apr 14 '26
Even if the cons win the next one, gun law reversals is the last thing on their agenda.
The law actually doesn't affect target or clay shooters that much. The only thing we can do is keep on attracting new people into the sport with what is allowed. The more people in the sport, the louder the voice at elections.
6
u/xthemoonx Apr 14 '26
What's at the top of their agenda?
14
u/PrairieBiologist Apr 14 '26
Making more money for corporations.
5
u/LongdayShortrelief Apr 15 '26

Copium/hopium: Carney embraces the big tent majority, uses both the SCC ruling (hopefully in our favour) and Conservative floor crossers to preach a message of unity and reflection to scrap the whole confiscation program, cancel the OIC and even update C-21 to go back to pre-2020 sensibility. He can also lean on the world being different, new threats, and the need for better more efficient spending.
I'll huff this until October...

27
u/Status_Ticket5044 Apr 14 '26
I'm relying on the fact that the SCoC very rarely even sniffs at hearing an appeal unless there is some merit they wish to explore, or they see a striking unconstitutionality.
The Liberal leadership can play this a few ways. SCoC tosses the appeal and their OICs become legitimized, probably with a warning or timeframe to cover them with real parliamentary legislation, which now they can pass. See Canadian gun owners, what we're doing is the will of the people and 31 October, 2026 is a hard deadline (provided a decision is made in the summer, another extension likely otherwise).
OR, the SCoC throws out the OICs, the Libs shrug and say they tried, blame the SCoC and uncooperative firearms owners and give up on the gun grab (other than prohibs from real parliamentary legislation) and we get some of our guns back.
OR, the SCoC throws out the OICs and the Libs double down and table new legislation and this whole fucking thing gets spun up again.
I'm tired, boss.
11
u/LongRoadNorth Apr 14 '26
I don't think the current liberal party, especially with a few floor crossers will be as willing to go down the identity politics shit.
Nathalie will throw a fit but I don't think see the party as supportive behind it because the current shit is so unpopular already
9
u/Status_Ticket5044 Apr 14 '26
Ok. I guess we're optimists. I hope Carney's busy as hell and just fed up to here hearing about it and all of the incompetence.

3
u/gamercast1337 Apr 15 '26
2030 agenda? The one the WEF quite literally talks about openly ? The "you will own nothing and be happy" guys. If you wonder why things are all going to shit you can thank them and their interference in govrrnments worldwide. Its not a conspiracy theory when they outright admit it, billionaires infiltrating and influencing world governments to give themselves more power.

https://sdgs.un.org/2030agenda
This the one you're talking about?
If you wonder why things are all going to shit you can thank them and their interference in govrrnments worldwide
I think it could be a bit multi-faceted, and go beyond simply saying it's this agenda that's behind everything going to shit.
Its not a conspiracy theory when they outright admit it, billionaires infiltrating and influencing world governments to give themselves more power.
And yet you've provided no sources to support this open confession of global domination.
1
u/gamercast1337 Apr 15 '26
"Erm source for billionaires being actual technocratic satanic p*dophiles?" Bro? Buddies files got released, its in there. If you look at anything these billionaires are doing, it should be making you deeply concerned. But "if it was true it would be on the news"the same news they literally control.( bezos and his Washington post i believe, for example).
And its literally their plan to make things go to shit to grab more power. The rich ALWAYS come out on top when there is depressions, political instability etc. I wouldnt even call it connecting the dots because its simpler than that to see the connection.

I don’t really think it matters, whether they were a few votes away from a majority, like they were before, or just straight-up have a slim one like they do now.
I doubt there’s anything left to force-through that they’d want to force-through that they couldn’t get the Bloc to vote with them on for little to no concessions. This doesn’t change much directly, on this issue, I don’t think.

3
u/naidacsac Apr 14 '26
Why is BC fucked in particular?
9
u/__phil1001__ Apr 14 '26
Because we have left leaders who have allowed RCMP to get involved in the gun confiscation and support the bill fully. Not only that, any and all emails to weasel eby go unanswered
15
u/jay370gt Apr 14 '26
Because Eby doesn’t believe in personal properties. He not just allowing Feds to take guns, but also First Nations to claim lands.

2
u/TarkovSundays Apr 14 '26
It’s insane because 4k is nothing for those bums they all live together and sell drugs😂 makes it way harder for us to obtain them. Making sure the guns are in the hands of criminals and not us.

I trade your black pill for another black pill that I find slightly less bitter. Another 3 years with Liberal economic policies will drive quality of life to a point where people will be so miserable, hungry, and angry that they will vote them out regardless of all the things you just pointed out. That is if we are still allowed to vote in a meaningful way. In 3 years there will be less boomers who are responsible for the resurgence of the liberal party due to the "orange man." Likewise, in 3 years the orange man should be out of the picture.
I think we are going to suffer increasingly for 3 years and then just perhaps Canadians will have had enough pain to want some change.

5
u/jayecal Apr 14 '26
I'm not optimistic that this goes well for us. With a majority he can ram through pretty much any legislation he wants.
Carney was the pm when the third wave of oic bans hit. And, offhand, I don't recall there being any scandal there worth mentioning or trying to use guns to distract or divide attention from.
And he's had all this time so far too undo the oic bans already and that hasn't happened. (I don't think he would anyway. He might not be Trudeau but his party is basically all the same as Trudeau's. )
I don't think any claims that he's a banker and cares about spending on things that matter are relevant here either. As if that were the case he have scrapped this useless waste of money a long time ago before it ever got 67 million with nothing to show for it.
Ideally the Supreme Court strikes the oic bans down as a gross misuse of power and let's us all return to using our firearms again. I'm not overly sure this will happen but the supreme court doesn't accept just any old case. They are super picky in which they take and of the last applicants they rejected all except the firearms case. Which means to me they see something there worth looking at. Hopeful in our favor of course.
4
u/No_Front_5315 Apr 15 '26
I have wondered if they only accepted the case so they can reject it and put the matter to bed once and for all.

Misery and decline.
Death of the more “sporting” elements of the gun community, ie 3 gun, IPSC.
Further economic stress on the industry and closure of more gun shops and ranges.
Lack of market diversity as many new products are either no longer eligible to be imported into Canada, or the producer is less incentivized to introduce said product to our restrictive market.
I expect we will either see OIC #4 or see the firearms act be completely rewritten in the next 3 years under a liberal majority.

10
u/rastamasta45 Apr 14 '26
I think it’s a coin toss im cautiously optimistic that this might be the end of future bans because they’re defunding public safety Canada.
However it’s the same ideological zealots in the party and all they need is another scandal to distract from and the gun agenda is their favourite cudgel to use.
Who knows with this nightmare policy and government. All I know is we’ve been under LPC rule for 10 years and quality of life has gone completely down. Now they get another long long 3 years with a majority. Maybe things will get better. Probably not, I’m not holding my breath.
-4
u/10081914 Apr 14 '26
Quality of life has gone down because of rising costs? Given that inflationary effects were felt around the world and especially the US which we were so very entangled with economically, the responsibility does lay on the LPC but not solely.
Has your wage increased at all in the past 10 years? I mean real wage, inflation adjusted.
4
8
u/RecipeAlternative854 Apr 14 '26
At the end of the day, if the past 15 years or so have taught me anything it's that the LPC if it Wants something will ram it through Parliament no lube and no opposition, the Cons are Controlled opposition at this point and it feels like we're living in a managed Democracy, If they want to roll in tanks to crush descent like they joked about over the freedom convoy (despite how you feel about it either which way) they can and will do it if the government is threatened enough.
The Police and Armed forces will eventually follow orders (That being said, Props to the Local Police who have refused confiscation, even if just for resource and manpower issues) tl:dr I went into last election with the mindset of many Canadians that it would be our last chance, And while we don't have the litteral stasi going door to door yet, It feels like politically everything is at the whim of the LPC in Canada.
. If you think the cons are gonna win? . No, We'll buy them out. . If you think you can vote your way out? No Toronto's voter base trumps you. . If you think You can start another right wing political party or a centrist one? We'll smear you as being like donald trump to stir up the boomers and ill informed who will fear vote for us and ensure our power.
What is there left to do? Even those of us who have Conservative MP's they mostly do nothing, Or won't go far enough. I'm tired, I really wanted to get my PAL back before 2020 I wanted one of those AR's or maybe one of the bullpups maybe a beretta or a glock? And they've continued banning everything slowly and systemically, Hell Airsoft only survived by a thread.
And don't get me started on trying to find a range in Ontario for firearms or even air guns. (The ones that exist are ran by boomers who gate keep them and have ridiculous arbitrary rules like owning shares or there's a waitlist)
Anyway, Novel aside what can we even do at this point? We have a government that's shown its content wiping it's ass with our freedoms spitting in our faces, Has willful disregard for public safety and continues to push. What is the end game? Because while some people are die-hards willing to fight to the bitter end, And I sympathize with that, And what point do you cut your losses to liquidate your assets and move for greener pastures?
7
u/FedInformant Apr 14 '26

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
Regardless of how anyone feels the reality is their goal is very clear now more then ever and its not just about Canada. By 2030 the common wealth nations will no longer allow its citizens to own firearms. They will achieve this by ANY means necessary.
The supreme court case will rule in favor of the federal government, while this isn't what any of us wish, we must come to terms with reality, and the reality is this Agenda will carryout and there is little to nothing the common man can do about it.
When the amnesty is over come october this will barely if at all be covered by MSM, instead they will maintain focus on whatever current Geopolitical disaster is taking place, and we will either be complying or criminals.
To understand this clearly its important that we really zoom our focus out of just this single firearms topic and understand that we as humanity are on the precipice of a technology revolution that will reshape the entire world as we know it. It will be great for few and disastrous for most. But i digress.
3
u/Hevmetal Apr 14 '26
I think the public appetite for gun control is currently exhausted and we will likely have an extention of the amnesty forced upon the government by the Supreme Court. Plus you should maybe think about renting a room in Saskatchewan. I think they have the best defence against seizure so far.
We aren't out of danger yet, but I think we have a better chance than some people are saying.
3
Apr 15 '26
I wouldn't be surprised if they passed the OICs into legislation (like they tried to do during C-21) and generalised the ban a bit more, resulting in the scooping up of remaining semi-autos.
Other than that, nothing really. The buyback will languish in failure, Amnesty extensions will continue.
3
u/Ok_Juggernaut1074 Apr 15 '26
Only thing i think is that we are screwed with this liberal government.
-4
u/dennisrfd Apr 15 '26
At least we are not the 51st state
1
u/Curious_Fail_3723 Apr 15 '26
Keep in mind, we do not have absolute property rights in Canada. Whereas the US does because it's in their bill of rights. enshrined. I don't believe 51st state would honestly work (just look at the shitshow that was Target), but importing some of whats in their constitution and bill of rights (like 1st, 2nd, 4th amendment, absolute property rights), would be a good idea.
0
u/Blood-Wolfe Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
At this point Canadian voters have proven how blind they are and I'd rather be the 51st State now. We wouldn't be getting treated like criminals at least. That said, it obviously won't happen but I would love it out of spite so I can laugh at the "elbows up" crowd for falling for lieberal propaganda.
6
u/adhq Apr 14 '26
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Carney is secretly hoping for the SCC to rule against the OIC and the program - this way he gets an easy exit without much - if any - political damage to the current Liberal party...
15
u/outline8668 Apr 14 '26
The Carney has ignored every conveniently placed, face-saving off ramp to the program that has been presented to him since he took power. I don't see that behavior trend changing.
4
u/adhq Apr 14 '26
Every one of those previous off-ramps would have angered we-know-who and lost him votes. The SCC decision is different because it's not his choice or decision. Don't forget, he has also conveniently and repeatedly distanced himself from the subject, which is a tell-tale in my opinion.
4
u/outline8668 Apr 14 '26
Any time he has been questioned on the subject he has doubled down with lies and misinformation. I really don't see him letting it go. I don't think he personally cares about guns but I think he does want to ram the program to completion.
2
u/No_Front_5315 Apr 14 '26
Interesting take I haven't heard before. It would certainly allow him some political capital without pissing off either side. I hope you're right.
2
u/Life-Event6168 Apr 14 '26
I foresse many tragic boating accidents involving the total loss of firearms collections in the coming months and years.
2
u/PEWPEVVPEVV Apr 14 '26
The entire program is in negative light by the entire political spectrum, police and they have a fall guy set up already, this project was designed to fail. They'll memory hole it by ignoring it.
4
u/SecureNarwhal Apr 14 '26
best case scenario: the new conservative members of the liberal party help sway the ban to not be as bad (unlikely to be reversed though), most likely some sort of compromise
most likely scenario: no change of course, buy back continues, Amnesty expires, most gun owners keep their prohibs locked up but the ones who get caught are made examples of
worst case scenario: more bans, more restrictions, no legislative opposition to their actions, no compromise

It's a weak majority. Everybody suspects that Nathalie Provost was blackmailing the party to keep the buyback program. In theory, they now have someone who can blackmail them in the other direction.
3
u/No-Night-48 Apr 15 '26
We have provinces, police forces, and scholars on our side. I hope the Supreme Court comes to a logical decision to leave us alone.
1
u/Whispersfine Apr 14 '26
My two cents. Gun ban is a political stunt, it always is. Now they have a majority, the next election will not come before 27. They probably will use this trick for the next election but for now, it’s probably not going to be the top priority.
Not saying this is ideal or pleasant by any shape or form, it certainly is not gong to get better anytime soon. Conservative is not going to win with PP, before they get a new leader. Let’s hope it doesn’t get worse.
2
u/No_Front_5315 Apr 14 '26
Why do you say a general election won't happen before 2027 ? Do you think the party will fracture or is there some mechanism of parliament I'm not aware of ?
I thought it was pretty certain 2029 was the soonest election, but I'm definitely not very well read on it.
2
u/Whispersfine Apr 14 '26
2029 is the latest year. They could, and in my opinion will trigger a general election before that year and secure another majority. By the looks of things now, they could. It is very possible
1
1
u/Technoaddict Apr 14 '26
No new massive bans would be my guess. That was JT’s flavor. SKS freeze handguns style with exemption for indigenous et al. hunting
1
u/Tyrocious Apr 15 '26
There is a non-zero chance that, with a majority, the Liberals will get a lot quieter on the buyback and gun ownership in general (until the next mass shooting, anyway). The buyback is a vote-buying gimmick, and the Terrebonne byelection shows they're ahead of the Bloc in a lot of Quebec.
It's not likely. But it is possible.

Carney genuinely just doesn't care about the 'Gun file'. He is a technocrat with a very narrow focus on the economy (he is the most qualified person in almost every room) and Trump. Since he doesn't care, he will simply leave it to the party old guard. This, of course, means that they will be like a dog with a bone, and will do everything they can to bury us.
Carney is arguably a centre-right politician. He has already captured most of the centre-left and centre in Canada. With 2 moves he could cut the (right) feet out from under PP: 1. Abandon this stupid ASFCP buy-back for the blue collar and firearm owner vote 2. Means tested CPP cutoffs for the GenX and Millennial vote.
Poilievre is our Justin Trudeau. The CPC is unelectable with him as the leader, ESPECIALLY against Carney.

I dont understand how though. Pierre's whole campaign for the last few years was to diversify the economy and not rely on america so much. Then all of a sudden carney starts saying it, CBC shares it in a good light and all of canada was ecstatic. Is that the result of brainwashing in real time?

Yes. I thought Pierre was fantastic but I almost * agree that he should go. He’s been too stained in the media and too many morons just can’t wrap their head around him. Having said that, I don’t know if anyone new would get treated differently BUT they would have less runway to be tarnished.

Yea, like I just can't see him capturing that momentum again. I honestly dont agree with alot of the popular criticisms of Pierre, i think alot of them are untrue and hollow. But I think overall theres just fatigue with him. However, I dont know of anyone that could really take over for him at this point. In the conservative party theres really only 3 politicians that I know, and like. Raquel Dancho, Dane Loyd and Pierre. So maybe one of them would do good?

I generally agree. Hard to say which way they should go , they also have to start recruiting real conservatives with long term vision and a set of balls.

Carney is not an anti gun hardliner. As much as I don’t like the party, it’s not party of his agenda.
There’s not much reason to go back where they are now n

With a majority secured I wouldn't expect any new bans unless we're approaching an election with the Liberals falling in the polls.
It's clear that Carney doesn't care about this issue at all, he's simply continuing the current bans to appease elements within his caucus.
While it would be nice to have a PM that actually cared about gun rights and it would be nice to see Carney repeal Trudeau era policies here as he's done in many areas, that's not going to happen.

My prompt on ChatGPT was:
Which federal Canadian MPs in the Liberal party represent ridings which are most supportive of the “pro gun” movement / least supp ortive of overreaching gun control?
It yielded about what I expected, pointing towards Liberals in the North, Atlantic Canada, northern Ontario, and the interior of BC.

It's good news that there's an unlikely ally for the gun community on the liberal side. It wouldn't be a bad idea for people in those ridings to be very vocal with their local MP. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that.

The search result dove into the role supportive Liberal MPs tend to play on this file. It’s generally quiet, behind the scenes, and avoiding creating a public schism.
I’d say solid activism might slow down regulation, but it’s unlikely to reverse it.

With the buyback suffering a lot of scrutiny as of late, I don't think they'll continue banning. Up to the Supreme Court whether the OICs get reversed or not. I'm doubtful on that, but we'll see what happens..
I don't know. I honestly can't see them following through with banning the SKS like they were hinting at, or updating their list every time a new semi passes RCMP screening and hits the market, now that the people are starting to wake up and realize how much money is being wasted, and that the actual criminals who bring guns to the streets aren't even a part of the confiscation..
Even normies who have never held a gun are starting to realize it seems kinda silly. It's like shutting down a race track, and prohibiting stock cars to try to stop street racing..
