Gun and gear reviews Big thank you to Nick and the team from IrunGunz
After the long process of applying for my ATC, getting it and needing a way to fill it these guys went above and beyond to make sure I got what I needed. After months of trying to find a 10mm for sale in Canada i found that they can still import a handgun for me. It was quite the process but now that its officially transferred into my name and here I couldnt be happier. Looking forward to a good prospecting season with a reliable sidearm to keep myself out of the jaws of a G bear this year

Yeah im glad you got it and im fortunate enough to have had some long before the ban but the fact you got an ATC and a handgun imported is just wild to me. Glad to see its possible

It was resonable considering the amount of bullshit they take care of with global affairs and the entire importing process.
I think all said and done fees were about ~250 imported, taxes and delivered.

It’s a $200 fixed import fee plus tax on the firearm to import with IRG I believe.

Hoping to go out and brush up at the range before taking it with me but the guys down in the Arizona recommended this as Glock doesnt like exports to canada anymore.

A little trick for field stripping… if you forget to use the pin to move the little lever inside and lock up the slide, grab the slide and pull the trigger. It’ll slip right off.

Word from the shop in Arizona is thatwhen the founder of glock passed the daughter took over and does not want to export to Canada anymore unless its for law enforcement.

Honestly it makes sense to an extend, the market is tiny now and not worth the logistics of supporting. Shitty but business wise it makes sense

What a sad outcome after years of responsible and lawful gun ownership. 😔
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the SCC, but I’m not holding my breath either.

They should have refused the sale on moral grounds. I'm sorry, you're from a country whose citizens can not acquire handguns? We have a policy that we do not sell to governments, militaries or law enforcement in countries where citizens are not permitted to own handguns. bye bye now

Very nice. Does your ATC only allow you to purchase specific handguns or is it a blanket approval to purchase whatever handguns you want?

Caliber restricted to the caliber that I did my proficency test on, also pistol vs revolver. I can purchase a pistol in 10mm but not a revolver.

How were you able to do a proficiency test before owning the handgun? Looked into this a little while ago but didn’t figure that part out.

I proficiency tested on a glock g20 gen 4, basically you have to borrow someones firearm to do it. I was lucky i got the person that gave me my rpal course to give me my PoP test with the firearm he had.

I initially was looking for G20 but Glock doesnt want to export to Canada anymore. So I upgraded. If you have an ATC i believe they imported a batch of them for people with ATCs

Can't imagine myself ever being able to get a ATC. is being a trapper/whatever else allowed to be a side gig or does it NEED to be your main job?
Can't believe I know my dream gun exists now and Ill never be able to get it... feel like going to cry in the corner like SCP 096, absolutely heartbroken 💔

Sorry there are quite a few others like trapping, and other things. Basically a profession that you have a reasonable need for protection. Prospecting my case is it is unreasonable for me to carry a long gun due to the amount of gear I have to carry to perform my duties, it wouldnt give me much of a chance against a surprise charge from an animal to unsling my rifle aim and fire. Draw and defend myself is the only reasonable course of action.

Nah, you'll be fine.
There's a really good study out there that used data from just about every known bear attack. It basically came down to either a .22 was good enough, or you'd need a canon.
Personally I use my semi 12g with slugs if practical, or a mint antique .45 Schofield on my hip if not. I work in Northern BC doing maintenance on remote sites, often alone so we're pretty much in a similar situation.

I wanted to get an M&P in 10mm before the freeze. But never got a chance.
Have you gotten to take it to the range yet? (I presume you'd be allowed to take it once in a while to verify things like sight alignment and practice using it.)
What kind of holster are you using to carry it?

Can be taken to the range. They fall under the same restrictions as any other restricted firearm. I have an ATT for range the ATC is just my exemption to purchase and to carry for work. I believe you can have 2 on your ATC at a time but you can remove and add as needed.

Able to elaborate on the process a bit? Im in BC and have a claim as well, and in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. Had a few close calls with wolves two years ago and a momma griz last year. Would love to stop carrying a 12 guage all the time and have a sidearm on me instead.
Did you just need to take the proficiency test and provide your claim location from MTO and then wait on paperwork essentially? How long did you wait?

I dont have a claim with the free mining license it was enough to get approved, you definitely need a proficiency test. Supporting things such as why its unreasonable to carry a long gun and i did a consultation with the CO in my area

Missed the last part of the question, but filing the paperwork, doing the PoP test, consultation and processing time was approx 6 monthes to get the ATC, getting the firearm took another 6 monthes, with having the firearm already youre look from 4 to 6 monthes roughly

I’m sure Op is a nice individual. But let’s not portray what he went through as “showin the man”. I’m sure if Op had their say, they would have much rather just gone and bought their handgun (that they clearly need for their job) at a store and not had to go through so much administrative hassle.

The issue with importing from the states is the export side. The ATF is a big fuck around to my understanding.

Open carry in a retention holster for work purposes. Meaning I have to be doing my job while carrying, whilst in transit I have to have it secured (locked, disabled, seperate from ammo the standard transportation). Restricted to the province of BC as the scope of my prospecting isnt centeralized.

Yeah I know trappers that have it, but ive never met any other professions that go for them.
I do survey and remote sensing almost exsclusively in extremely remote locations, maybe its worth applying for one. I do lug a shotgun around all the time, and I already own handguns that would work for bear.. anyways, beautiful peice man. When I saw this I had a flood of nostalgia for the days when guys were making these posts every other day 😭

You have to apply for the ATC on your own accord and get it approved. The process looks something like this:
Fill out paper work and submit Recieve a questionaire and confirmation of a PoP test. Complete questionaire, do a proof of proficency test with the holster you intend to use for your job. Wait. Get approved Then contact irungunz about importing.
