Misc Anyone been to Sail lately?
I hadn't been to a Sail in years and was in the area so I stopped in. Some decent hunting gear there, and a large selection of guns, but like 90% bolt action rifles. Figured I'd grab some ammo. Grabbed 2 boxes of Challenger 12g buckshot, and a box of Blazer .22lr. Wanted to grab some 7.69x39 but they only had fancy Hornaday stuff for like $2 a shot.. Definitely not somewhere I'd shop regularly, but I almost forgot they existed.. Surprised I never hear them mentioned here at all.. Anybody here shop at Sail? Any reason not to?

They (used to, maybe still do) price match on flats of 12ga

Yeah they were going to price match for me but I already have like 200 shells at home. Only wanted a couple boxes.

I go there fairly regularly, it’s my preferred store locally for general outdoors/camping type stuff. I’ve bought some ammo and hunting stuff there, selection is decent and they’re open evenings and weekends which is a bit more convenient sometimes than my local gun store.
For a big box store I’d say the selection of hunting and shooting stuff is better than any CT stores around here but not as good Cabelas/bass pro.

You know, that’s a really great visual separation of “city folk outdoors” and “country folk outdoors”. It really does feel like two different stores.

Ammo is usually over priced and they’re fudds who don’t know shit. Trying to listen to some fat fuck who’s most modern firearm dates to 1990 try and tell me that 10 round AR mags are illegal

To be fair, 10 rnd ar-15 rifle mags are illegal. 10 rnd Lar-15 Pistol mags are legal.

I can’t stand the firearms counter Sail guys. They make the whole interaction feel incredibly awkward, like they really don’t want you browsing and really don’t know much about what they sell. Theres a younger guy at Cambridge now, he’s great. Good prices on flats of 12ga and clays though, and they price match so if something goes on sale at cabelas I don’t have to drive 2 hours.

I always love going there, but I find it a funny setup. They have the city people outdoors stuff on the first floor, and the country people outdoors stuff upstairs.

Sail is a camping store that sells guns... in a pinch its nice but any other LGS in southern ontario is far better for firearm related needs. Cabelas will always be #1 for hunting gear selection espeically factoring in all of their sales. Their niche is putting stores in places where they lack gun shops and cabelas so instead of driving an hour you can just spend 5/10 percent more.

I don't disagree with your statement, but they will price match so you might not even have to pay more. To keep a long story short, Sail saved me 2hr+ driving, prevented the aggravation of the 4 weeks to xmas crowds at the Vaughan mall, and they matched the deeply cut sale price from Bass Pro (I think like 50% off). The guy was very thorough in checking they were the same gun, but was 100% behind matching the price.
For some added humour, when I told my wife we just hit the jackpot, she said she had been looking forward to shopping at the mall so I still got fucked. There wasn't an open spot in the entire parking lot, I had to stalk 3 different groups before I found someone leaving.

Oh dont get me wrong i still like sail. But i dont even really buy ammo from cabelas anymore either. I buy most of my ammo at tenda in richmondhill. They by far have the best selection and price in southern ontario with the next best would be firearms outlet. Tenda also typically has the best price on firearms aswell. Love that store. Accuracy plus is also an honorable mention. When ever i need something on the way to hunt camp by far ellwood epps has the best selection of ammo and gun options in central ontario.... Sail for me is just as far as cabelas so i stand nothing to gain by going there really. The georgetown canadian tire has the best selection of guns and ammo out of any canadian tire ive ever been too aswell. They carry quite a bit of hunting gear and shooting supplies. Even have a dedicated counter for guns. I just always prefer to spend my money on a local gun shop where ever i may be because they depend on us to stay a float those big corporate stores make money year round

I shop at SAIL when their pricing makes sense for the product I’m looking for. Their loyalty program works in my favour a decent amount as well.
I would like if their purchasing and distribution model caught up to other retailers, and for their website to get some better filtering of products, but neither of those things have been a big hindrance for what I’ve bought there.

I've had a bad experience purchasing trail cams for a trap line with them. I bought a set of 6 and 3 arrived DOA. they told me to pound sand they don't accept returns/exchanges on cameras despite sending me dud products. I won't buy from them again

Find sometimes they have better deals on shotguns than Basspro but not always. If your in the market for crazy expensive and fancy skeet shooting guns I find they usually have a bunch.

I still go for flats of target load. Their price for challenger isnt too bad. And the actual stock remington gun club.

I used to but for some reason their online store wouldn't allow my new visa to go through and it was really annoying. Since that happened I don't go very often which is a shame, they had some nice hunting gear. Now I just go to Al Flahertys for anything hunting or G4C for guns/ammo.

They used to have great deals off the clearance racks, but now its weird brands at still-expensive prices.

I used to when they had their location in Vaughan, everything was always better stocked and ammo prices were wayyyy better than Bass Pro.
I make the occasional stop in there when i find myself in Burlington or Cambridge.

Only ever been to the one in Ottawa, would go for clothing and camping stuff. Personally, I find the staff at the gun desk fairly uninformed, bordering on incompetent. Would never buy a gun there, might maybe buy ammo.
I’ve also noticed that this store displays all their semis with the actions locked back. I’m not a huge fan of this because springs under pressure might set over time (I know it’s been disproven before but still don’t like it). Their hunting section over all isn’t great either.

They are out of Quebec, so I try not to support them but once in a while they have a sale good enough to get me to spend some money. Their website is piss poor too, shows a bunch of items on sale with no stock online( in store only)
