Gun and gear reviews Law-Compliant AR “Cope” Build – Looking for Suggestions

Obviously no AR-15s here, so I’m looking at the usual cope options.

Looking for something that is fun to shoot at the range.

What are you running and how’s it been? - Reliability? - Any must-do upgrades? - Anything to avoid?

What are YOU willing to cope (compromise) on? You can get a fully automatic, looks close, gas operated BB gun. Or a 556, close sorta tactical look, straight pull/pump. Or a semi auto, similar cartridge (7.62x39) that looks nothing like it and has a fixed mag.

Good question honestly.

Want something that looks the part, but don't care if it's a firearm? Gas operated BB gun will so that.

Want something that looks the part, and shoots a bullet,  and perhaps want a shorter barrel?  Well if you are OK sacrificing the semi automatic capacity,  we got straight  pulls, pump actions and even some tactical bolt actions  that will look close and shoot bullets.

If you really want the semi auto, and want ti shoot bullets, we got plenty of tactical  22lr rifles with nice big magazines to blast away with.

And if you want the function of a semi auto with a 223 caliber, you basically need to go for the Turkish semi autos. Or go 9mm with the Henry  Homesteader, or grab an sks with detachable magazines.

It all depends on what you want to sacrifice, but you need to sacrifice something.

For me, I don't care about the look as much as the function, so I'd likely go the Turkish 223 route,  or get a semi auto 22lr if I just wanted to have fun  and didn't care about the caliber

I have a renegade and I’ve put at least 1000 rounds through it which I know isn’t a lot but its fun for being a cope rifle. Haven’t had any issues with it whatsoever and lots of options to change/upgrade/add parts.

Surprising not really to be honest, I got mine from Tenda and they gave me some odd mag at first so I was having a few issues on the first few times I brought it to the range but then I got a LAR-15 Mag and it’s been smooth sailing since

I'm enjoying my Renegade MkII about as much as one can enjoy a neutered AR. It's fun, but also a constant painful reminder to what we have lost. When MRA FINALLY gets their proprietary 20 plus round mags released that'll certainly give the Renegade MKII a nice perk.

Holding out for a Turkish Pump 9mm would be a very valid consideration as well. IMO 9mm is a lot more affordable, comfortable and enjoyable then .223 inside of 200m.

But with no bolt hold open if I'm correct ? I'm also confused as to why some BCL mags got like 4 side ribs pictured while others only have 2...

One side of mag has 4 ribs, other has 2

Quite right. One side has four ribs and the other has two I think when I get home I’ll double check. Having a lot of fun with them, I think 20 rounds makes MRA super fun

Are those still sold often? I wanna pick one up and modify my ruger american ranch gen2 t use them. I hate using neutered mags in a bolt action

Those pump  9mm look super fun, even if we did have mote semi auto  9mm options. Likely because they have the short barrels. A compact little pump 9mm is most definitely on my wishlist

I got a Henry Homesteader. It’s super fun to shoot and you can make it look pretty cool. It’s nice that 9mm is cheap to get also.

Ive seen a few derya tm22s on here kitted out to look similar to an ar. You can change the stock, handguard, etc. Also have those ar style sleeves for the mags. Im currently looking into that for myself.

Alcor is a good option. Tons of good aftermarket furniture (although avoid the crusader arms furniture, it looks like shit)

The closest you’ll get to an AR is the backland hunter, but it’s an abomination. The other options like the Alcor/Chimera/AD500 are Turkish and are also abominations…

So, I’d recommend either an SKS if you want a semi auto centerfire, otherwise a TM22 or 10/22 if you want a semi auto rimfire.

The Derya TM-22 probably comes the closest. They range from $400-650 (or maybe 750) for the base gun. It shoots .22LR, and you can add lots of attachments. Plus there are aftermarket parts to decorate it and make it look more like a genuine AR-15. Tommy Enterprises is an example.

MRA Renegade, Taipan X, Troy Par... there are lots of options.

Renegade is probably the closest and Canadian made, solid rifle.

The Taipan Evo also has a AR15 compatible trigger group (which the X does not) and an AR-style bolt hold open.

There is also a Crusader pump action called the PND. I have enjoyed my Crusader Arms Dual Caliber Combo semi-auto but CA's QC and QA seem to be... tenuous.

I have tried the MRA Renegade and the Taipan X in the same range day. They are largely comparable in quality and feel, though the Renegade feels more like an AR out of the box.

I went with the Taipan X because I could get shots off more rapidly and without taking my hand off the foregrip. It just felt more intuitive for faster fire. Deciding between them is largely a matter of personal preference - I think either will do you well. I have not tried the Troy PAR or SPR, but given the choice between a Canadian made straight pull and non-Canadian, other quality aspects being close or equal, I would buy Canadian. If MRA eventually makes a pump-action 5.56mm, I may invest!
