Updated documents now saying the program is at $2 billion dollars

u/MasterScore8739 Apr 07 '26

Remeeeeember. “If it saves even a single life, it’s worth it.”

Just don’t try to ban cigarettes, alcohol, recreational drugs, knives over a certain size or vehicles of certain type. That saying only works with firearms.

u/rastamasta45 Apr 07 '26

Imagine how many lives 2 billion to MRI machines or drug prevention would have saved 🤦🏽

79

u/Cadaren99 on Apr 07 '26

Better still, imagine how much less gun crime would exist if you put $2b into youth social programs.

29

u/GordoBlue Apr 07 '26

Or crack down on ILLEGAL guns. But no... too hard and don't get the optics.

7

u/Impossible-Green-862 Apr 08 '26

Cracking down on "illegal guns" is the same logic as banning any other gun. Solve the source of the issue, not the item being used for said issue. We'll have all of our guns made illegal with that logic. We never should have lost the right to handguns or anything else.

3

u/Kennylobster8899 Apr 08 '26

You're right. They need to fix the real issue not throw us under the bus. I stopped believing it's for votes though... It's for control of the masses

1

u/GordoBlue Apr 08 '26

Good point. They keep making more guns illegal. Should've said black market guns that criminals use for crime.

11

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Apr 07 '26

This is my biggest talking point when discussing the buyback with friends who are non-firearms owning progressives. We’d save more lives and reduce crime by properly addressing the toxic drug epidemic.

Really feels like our current government cares more about pushing through this dead-in-the-water policy to gain voter brownie points than helping the 30,000 Canadians who die each year from drug overdose.

1

u/RGundy17 Apr 08 '26

Amen 🙌

21

u/lee--carvallo Apr 07 '26

People who think like that should be barred from having any power over anyone. 2 billion dollars would save a whole lot of lives if used wisely

6

u/MasterScore8739 Apr 07 '26

I could think of so many better ways to spend such a huge chunk of money. Then again when it’s between spending money to ‘buy back’ legally bought property or spending that money on hiring more border agents, I guess it’s a tough choice to make. 🙄

u/MostEnergeticSloth Apr 07 '26

277 firearm homicides in 2020.

323 unintentional drownings in 2020.

I posit that backyard pools present a higher risk than legally owned Canadian firearms.

2

u/MasterScore8739 Apr 08 '26

Agreed. All backyard pools must have a licensed life guard on duty anytime a member of the family is home.

When the family is not home, there must be two in duty. One at either end of the pool.

2

u/MostEnergeticSloth Apr 08 '26

Are you crazy??! Do you know how many backyard pools are in Montreal!? Think of the vot– uh, I mean expense to the public!!

6

u/Dickastigmatism Apr 07 '26

How ironic that these are the same people are responsible for our catch and release justice system.

3

u/Yamaganto_Iori Apr 07 '26

Don't worry, once all those evil guns are destroyed they'll start working through that list.

3

u/guestpassonly Apr 07 '26

Remeeeeember. “If it saves even a single life, it’s worth it.”

I am reminded of this

3

u/JAFOguy Apr 07 '26

Hey! Small knives will get you too. And hammers

6

u/MasterScore8739 Apr 07 '26

See!! No one needs a knife with such a distinctive point to it. The only reason one would need such a destructively pointed knife is to cause maximum penetration.

Foods don’t need to be penetrated. Therefor we should outlaw all pointed steak knife’s with textured handles.

3

u/nschwart91 Apr 08 '26

Be careful. I've seen this raised as a serious idea in the UK.

56

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Apr 07 '26

Aaaaaaaand here we go! We've officially matched the Long Gun Registry.

25

u/gamercast1337 Apr 07 '26

WOO HOOOO LETS FUCKING GOOOO CAN WE DOUBLE IT AND PASS IT ON??

3

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart al Apr 07 '26

And the confiscation hasn’t even technically started.

36

u/SpectreBallistics Spectre Ballistics International (Verified) Apr 07 '26

2 billion to collect at most 67,000 guns. That's ~$30,000 / gun.

31

u/rastamasta45 Apr 07 '26

And $0 to $15 of that for compensation to the owner. What a disgrace. Is Gary eating the money?!?

5

u/prosper_0 Apr 07 '26

'consultation' fees to groups like poly.

5

u/gamercast1337 Apr 07 '26

"Uhh Gary where did all the money for the gungrab go?"

Conspicuously 2 billion dollar shapped throat Gary-soyjak: "uhhh no money found around here no siree!"

2

u/Eazy-Eid Apr 07 '26

This is the Liberal party we're talking about. You know they're lining their friends' pockets.

2

u/rastamasta45 Apr 08 '26

Or the wife of the finance minister (latest liberal scandal)

3

u/adhq Apr 07 '26

Not yet. At the moment, he's just stuffing his cheeks with it

1

u/JAFOguy Apr 07 '26

And yet they can't pay what we actually paid for them.

28

u/SecureNarwhal Apr 07 '26

and that's with the abysmal participation XD

they haven't even saved money from the lack of participation

8

u/Late_Winner6859 Apr 07 '26

They haven’t even got to the collection part

11

u/Benefit_Waste Apr 07 '26

it needs to be scrapped big time.....

Polymarket bet when?

3

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart al Apr 07 '26

Fuck that. Make it 20. Make it 50.

I honestly don’t care if it bankrupts Canada at this point. People who voted for a party who promised to implement bad policy need to see what bad policy brings.

u/HungryFollowing8909 Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

Got a bet going? Any calls? Puts?

Firearms gambling and stocks, what more can a degenerate like me ever want

1

u/Bavarian_Raven Apr 08 '26

My guess was 25 bil when this first started. Hope I am wrong. lol.

2

u/jay370gt Apr 07 '26

There were diehard liberal supporters over at r/canada saying the estimated cost of $1B+ was exaggerated. SMH.

4

u/guestpassonly Apr 07 '26

If i had a nickel for every time a canadian firearm program went up all the way to 2 billion, i'd have two nickels.

Which isnt a lot, but it's weird it's happend twice.

2

u/HappyCan7250 Apr 08 '26

2 billion still is a pipe dream. Easily 5 billion while still ripping off gun owners. Like there's still gonna be 2 million more guns that need to be compensated and I'm hoping the Supreme Court takes this angle in the case, as the government will have to release to turn the true number of imports, which they know based on import records and they're just playing dumb about it all the time.

Maybe the SCC will say "okay, you can do this, but you have to pay every single gun owner fair market value for their rifles, all 2 million of them". We can hope.

48

u/thxxx1337 Apr 07 '26

2 bills.... Even if you're antigun you should be morally outraged at this misrepresentation of tax paper money.

5

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart al Apr 07 '26

Bro anyone who is anti gun is really only upset this program isn’t going far enough.

56

u/JurboVolvo Apr 07 '26

2500 dead from firearms since 2016 vs 60,000 dead from the OD crisis since 2016 So are we gonna get 48 Billion for the OD crisis?

33

u/theubu Apr 07 '26

How many of those were from PAL holders, or even those stolen from PAL holders? Have a feeling that 2500 number would be a lot lower with that taken into account.

10

u/goodfleance Apr 07 '26

Not sure exactly but the last window I looked at had around 280 firearm deaths and only 2-3 were linked to licensed gun owners. So about 1% of firearms deaths, and firearms are only used in around 3% of violent crimes.

So we're around 1% of 3% of violent crime

7

u/FromDeepestFathom Apr 07 '26

To be clear to the reader, 1% of 3% IS NOT 1/3rd. It is a very very tiny number, 0.03% of all violent crimes in Canada.

3

u/JurboVolvo Apr 08 '26

I’ve heard 75-80% of firearms deaths are suicide in Canada. Likely a pretty good chunk of those are PAL holders. That being said what are we doing to properly fund mental healthcare? Fix the issues that lead to people making that choice?

-1

u/Juice1984 on CSSA menber Apr 07 '26

There mostly pal holders. Suicides account for 90 of firearms deaths here other 9 is accident. Rest murder

24

u/uber_poutine Apr 07 '26

I'm a simple guy, I see a Noah Schwartz interview and I updoot.

6

u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Apr 07 '26

His books on the topic are pretty rad if you haven't had a chance to read them yet.

4

u/uber_poutine Apr 07 '26

I haven't yet, but Targeted is in the mail from the U of T Press.

3

u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Apr 07 '26

It's a solid read. Enjoy!

47

u/Lashiech Apr 07 '26

Well I'll be, actual proper journalism on this topic.

27

u/airchinapilot Apr 07 '26

Give credit to the author who published the study / book otherwise journalists would have to do their own original research

8

u/Lashiech Apr 07 '26

Credit to both imo. The journalist clearly read the research based on how pointed her questions were.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '26

the interview was great, even the lady asked great questions, but I do with it was longer.

20

u/rastamasta45 Apr 07 '26

The LPC have completely lost the narrative war on this, it’s time to pack it up

19

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '26

nah, I think they should double down for the 10th time, im sure it will work eventually lol.

8

u/Late_Winner6859 Apr 07 '26

Well, they do seem to treat our tax money as an infinite resource for their publicity stunts. And average voters don’t seem to care

19

u/Scott-YYC Apr 07 '26

I'm looking forward to Gary eating a $hit sandwich.

25

u/prosper_0 Apr 07 '26

He's not the fanatic, just a professional liar. He has no personal attachment to the program or its aims, and he's fully aware that it's all pointless and untrue. Therefore, I don't forsee him getting unhinged at all, just moving on to the next grift.

11

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Apr 07 '26

Yup, he is a professional pawn.

7

u/IGnuGnat Apr 07 '26

"just following orders"

10

u/Armed_Accountant Whoever wants to touch my guns has to touch me first. Apr 07 '26

Careful what you wish for, he will be replaced by Natty.

15

u/Scott-YYC Apr 07 '26

It might be beneficial to gun owners if Nathalie Provost's untreated mental illness and PTSD was put on full display for the public. Then even non-gun owners might question who's driving the bus and the reasons for it.

6

u/dgod40 Apr 07 '26

No way do we want this to happen. The general public will see her as a victim of a horrible gun attack and sympathize with her. They will see her as a champion of a cause to save their darling children from crazed gunmen meanwhile turn a blind eye to all the issues that are actually ruining their children's futures and possibly get their kids killed.

3

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart al Apr 07 '26

No PS minister before him has had to. I don’t see how he would have to. He’ll get parachuted into another position and another patsy will take his place and continue the downward trajectory.

What bothers me the most is how unserious the Liberal party is when it comes to the public safety file. Every PS minister has been so goddam incompetent; Ralph Goodale was the most competent one we ever had under this party. We’re talking about Canadian lives being at stake with this file and it’s the biggest fucking idiots who are put in charge who seem to care about anything other than our actual safety.

12

u/613mitch Apr 07 '26

Both the host and guest in this clip were absolutely fantastic. Definitely also seems the host has a much better notes or understanding of core issues than we normally see in conversations in the media on this topic.

21

u/NEUMANN-METALWORKS Neumann Metalworks Apr 07 '26

He made a great point, that regardless of all of this nonsense purposefully creating tension between gun owners and the RCMP is a horrible idea. That is called provocation, and if RCMP get sent door to door people will die, that is sadly a guarantee. The government should be working to increase relations between police and gun owners, not start shit and try to sic their dogs on us.

0

u/dgod40 Apr 07 '26

Why does anyone think the RCMP is going door to door to confiscate the firearms? They have never said that to my knowledge.

9

u/Hardwater_Hammer Apr 07 '26

They've said it many times. When the RCMP and others said no we wont do that then they shifted to say we will get retired RCMP to go confiscate the weapons.

6

u/dgod40 Apr 07 '26

They said they would be going door to door with retired officers to go get the firearms that were declared through the ASFCP. If you have information that says otherwise, I'd love to see it.

2

u/FiresprayClass Apr 07 '26

Because they are the Federal law enforcement agency and the Federal government they answer directly to can tell them what to do.

They don't have to tell you that in advance.

8

u/Bitter_Lettuce2970 Apr 07 '26

Cool they used a handgun photo when this has nothing to do with them. Just use that one AR15 stock photo like everyone else.

6

u/Curious_Fail_3723 Apr 07 '26

Great...now I'm worried they'll go after 3D printers next. Because you know we just can't have nice things.

5

u/dgod40 Apr 07 '26

Whenever i talk to people about this, they think I'm crazy. They see a 3D printer as a device to make articulating toys. I use mine as a tool to make useful things as well as toys. The government sees it as Genies lamp to make ghost guns. We all know who makes the rules most of the time.

6

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Apr 07 '26

We gotta give Dr. Schwartz a huge thank you for getting out there and presenting evidence informed talking points in such a clear and objective manner.

He’s also doing really good work for both gun owners AND public safety advocates by touching on the efficacy and economic impact of community programs in stopping violent crime.

Regardless of whether you own firearms or not, I think we can all say it’s better when the government spends money wisely, on initiatives that will ACTUALLY do something

5

u/jay370gt Apr 07 '26

I wish we could send a $2B bill to the LPC and the unhinged lunatics at PolySeSouvient.

2

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 07 '26

Its entire existence is a short coming

4

u/Weak-Coffee-8538 Apr 07 '26

"$2,000,000,000 Billion dollars" and this will double or triple.

What a waste of money. Imagine all that money going to Street culture programs in our cities and communities.

The Minister of Nature and Minister of Public safety are out to lunch and need to be placed as back benchers.

3

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart al Apr 08 '26

Only thing I don’t agree with is the notion that magazine capacity limits somehow prevent mass shootings.

The 2c rivet in every Pmag in Canada isn’t somehow preventing people from turning into a crazed lunatic.

2

u/TarkovSundays Apr 08 '26

This has to set in motion a track reversal… this is catastrophic failure. I want 2020 back no reason for us not to own pistols

2

u/T-Rex-Plays Apr 08 '26

Absolutely great advocacy by the policy expert. This is how we should argue our side. He did a great job of calmly explaining.

They are immune to scandals and corruption. I have no clue how. It’s a never ending list of things for them. Even now with the finance minister...

1

u/Saucy__Intruder Apr 09 '26

I love that the cover image is an AI slop image of a type of firearm that is not even included in the confiscation scheme. Remember when accuracy, detail, and objective presentation of verified facts was a key component of journalism? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
