News / Politics / Activism Gun buyback tally of over 67,000 firearms falls well short of federal estimate

https://www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/national/liberals-eye-next-steps-in-firearm-buyback-as-window-for-individual-owners-closes/article_2be4b546-5f85-57d1-83c9-9027999374d5.html

So less than half of their reduced number, even less than their reported number of know firearms and way way way less than the actual numbers of what’s out there. So who will blink first.

67,000 firearms

Geez, they’re going to declare this a victory, but at least the media is not helping them.

However, articles still have too much misinformation, as Nathalie mentioned; misinformation about why the government enacted the scheme, what was banned, and how the confiscation program works.

but at least the media is not helping them.

a lot of the bigger outlets when they do nightly stories on it are full of misinformation. like ctv acted like the liberals 130k qutoe was for all guns they prohibited, not just the restricted ones.

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 01 '26

Oh that with the business buy back. Lol there's no way they collected 12k guns last week lol.

101

u/Apples_and_Overtones Your feet suck and so do you Apr 01 '26

They haven't "collected" anything. Just people who declared they want to participate. And those declarations can be pulled at any time until they actually do "collect."

24

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 01 '26

Im aware.

They did collect 12k guns from retailers already.

16

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Apr 01 '26

Yeah, I remember them saying 22000 of them are from businesses for the 2020 list.

They didn't disclose how many business firearms there are from the 24/25 list.

2

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 01 '26

Guys I swear I read that number was for total guns but I may be wrong.

152

u/uchihaoni47 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

So less than half of the target known restricted firearms they wanted to collect (around 136k) and less and ~3% of the total estimated prohibited firearms (assuming around 2mil non-restricted that are now prohibited).

I feel safer already! /s

54

u/Rhubyn Apr 01 '26

Right? I think tonight I'll sleep better than every other night in my life now that these terrifying 22s and shotguns and SAM and mortar systems are banned

8

u/__phil1001__ Apr 02 '26

I had to give up my grenade launcher /s

u/bigT689 Apr 01 '26

What’s another couple billion of wasted tax dollars? Let’s triple down 😎

1

u/Gnarwhal_YYC Apr 02 '26

Triple it, give it to someone else.

14

u/burgers1919 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Please put /s for sarcasm.

This government is so insane we run the risk of this government not being able to detect obvious sarcasm and taking this as support.

"Look even people in the gun community say they feel safer" - but they will deliver it with a straight face.

u/uchihaoni47 Apr 02 '26

Added for our safety!

1

u/burgers1919 Apr 02 '26

Thank you for caring so much about our safety Like our government overlords /s

69

u/Molnutz Apr 01 '26

Isn't there, like, ~100k AR-15s alone, let alone all the other formerly non-restricted plinkers that were added? Who tf did the math on this? Peak incompetence.

44

u/MustardTiger88 Apr 01 '26

I don't understand how the liberals seemingly ignore that there are now way more prohibs than just the ~136k restricted's (now prohibs) that were registered pre-ban. What gives? They banned approx. 2500 makes/models and aren't accounting for the millions of firearms now affected, over and above the 136k restreicted's.

31

u/Molnutz Apr 01 '26

It's all political pandering. That's it. This is how the sausage is made.

14

u/WeightedDips95 Apr 02 '26

They’re engaging in purposeful misinformation

18

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Apr 01 '26

Correct, 108,047 restricted firearms affected by the 2020 OIC according to the RCMP. Public Safety estimates that 150,000 total for the 2020 list, CSAAA estimated over 500k.

54

u/live_long_die_well Apr 01 '26

There were 102 000 registered, restricted, now-prohibited AR-15s in Canada as of 2022.

26

u/soviet_toster Apr 01 '26

What a runaway success!

24

u/floppy_breasteses Apr 01 '26

I have a .22 that I got for $50. Turns out the parts needed to make it work are impossible to find. But, on principle alone, I won't even give them that thing.

14

u/HappyCan7250 Apr 02 '26

I would genuinely feel guilty complying with this program. Our "civic duty" (to quote Gary and Provost) is to not comply.

5

u/floppy_breasteses Apr 02 '26

Lol, Gary and that crazy bitch make me feel extra non-compliant.

3

u/Steelringin Apr 02 '26

I bought an AR lower many years ago for $60. Never bothered to get an upper and actually build it, just sat in mg safe. According to the price list at one point they were offering something 10x what I paid for it. I considered it for about 3 seconds before deciding that they can keep their fuckjn' money. I'd rather grind it i to dust than give it up. If I can't have they can't either, not for any price.

4

u/WhackDanielz I <3 shitposts Apr 02 '26

They can keep your money.

Don't forget that the government is using your confiscated wealth to compensate you for the property they're trying to confiscate.

If you paid your taxes this year - and let's face it, it's Canada, you paid your taxes - you are paying yourself for the buyback. And giving the government an interest free loan along the way.

19

u/MikeBrowne2010 Apr 01 '26

Well short is one way to put it.

13

u/turboash78 Apr 01 '26

It is shocking how dumb our government is.

16

u/Murray3-Dvideos Apr 01 '26

Their not dumb. Just pandering for votes. It's a disgusting calculation they've made. F over 2.2 million Canadians to secure a few seats in Quebec. Then purposely lie and misinform the general public to get away with it.

7

u/Kooky-Hamster4071 Apr 02 '26

This is the truth. Trudeau, Carney, Gary... They all know it won't reduce crime. When the Prime Minister does something that's obviously bad for the country, giving reasons for it that make no sense, it's because they're not telling you the real reason.

13

u/Canadian-gun-nut Apr 01 '26

It makes my heart happy knowing that my community is holding strong together <3 stronger than any other Canadian community tbh and I am so god damn fucking proud of each and every one of you for holding strong because united they can’t touch us or our property, which we all lost on that private cruise ship accident that we went on last summer

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '26

The WHOLE ship! Just...POOF! GONE!

1

u/Canadian-gun-nut Apr 03 '26

It was a sad bizarre day indeed 😢

11

u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Apr 02 '26

67k is still too much!

60

u/hafetysazard Apr 01 '26

It sounded like a Liberal con job, and Canadians treated it like one, because it was one.  If they did it properly like Australia did and offer people above market value for their guns, it definitely would have had far more participation. Instead, they were offering $2 for rifles that cost guys almost $2,000, and rumblings about what people could actually expect, including a capped budget, most were confident they wouldn’t be seeing a single penny.

75

u/Vintage_Pieces_10 Apr 01 '26

While I agree that the compensation should’ve been proportional like Australia’s buyback, this confiscation and handgun ban has done nothing and will do nothing to curb violence. We weren’t the problem. Joe blow gangbanger and his 8th violent offence with a lenient bail release with easy criminal access to any firearm he chooses is the problem

27

u/Jazzlike_Finish123 Apr 01 '26

Australia is also an island so getting guns there is not as easy.  We have the most gun crazy country at our southern border so bringing guns in is beyond easy.  Especially with native lands at the border it gets almost laughably easy.

17

u/gunscythe Apr 01 '26

This is exactly why every criminal has an American subcompact handgun. It is ridiculously easy, which is why even the street level drug dealers have these. We are spending billions going after the hunters instead.

10

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 01 '26

The compensation shouldnt exist just like any of the other laws passed in the last 5-6 yrs. I could probably argue further back even.

59

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 01 '26

Nah fuck Australia and any other government subjecting us to this bullshit. They could offer me triple what my guns are worth and id spit in their faces. We are law abiding tax paying economy contributing citizens that are being blatantly disarmed under some guise of "public safety". Its a crock a shit.

-10

u/Moist_onions Apr 01 '26

I donno. If they offered triple + full retail for the accessories I'd probably sell mine then just do like the criminals and get some from the black/grey market

8

u/WeightedDips95 Apr 02 '26

Make sure to ask your wife’s breeder for permission before you do anything

1

u/Moist_onions Apr 02 '26

I did. He said don't be a fucking idiot

23

u/MapleDesperado Apr 01 '26

Whether people like it or not, there are far too many guns to buy them all back - especially if fairly compensated.

This was destined to fail from the outset.

8

u/Johnny-Unitas Apr 01 '26

As most of us hoped it would.

10

u/hafetysazard Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

Right, but Liberals, officially or unofficially, control the narrative a lot of Canadians see, and will spin this as gun owners being bad people. If they start kicking in doors, and pointing actual assault rifles at people’s kids, they’ll tell the public, “Well, we gave them every opportunity, and even offered them money. It is their fault this happened to them.”

This confiscation scheme is likely them simply being able to say they did their due diligence under English common law that says they must compensate people when they take their stuff away.

5

u/Johnny-Unitas Apr 01 '26

They can and do already do that.

5

u/Natural_Comparison21 Apr 01 '26

Honestly I think that would back fire (no pun intended.) As the number of people they would do that to would be so many that you would end up in a situation where our prison population would explode and on top of that you end up in a situation where it personally affects to many people. It would be like the government saying cancer victims are bad but when you actively see people dying from cancer and suffering that destroys whatever bullshit narrative they put out.

Yea see if that I doubt. It would be way to much paper work for the police. Which one thing cops hate to do is paper work. Especially more paper work over a long period of time.

10

u/Pinkl3monade65 Apr 01 '26

No such thing as disarming the populace "properly"

4

u/hafetysazard Apr 01 '26

Of course not, but fleecing the people who don’t care didn’t help their cause. Either way, it is another example of how terribly the Liberals do anything.

3

u/Sipdippity Apr 02 '26

I've heard people say this program was designed to fail from the beginning, and I'm starting to think that may be the case. The people behind this they're not stupid, they're conniving. They've had no problem wasting and stealing our money for a long time. And now this super important program comes along they are suddenly unable to make money available for the buyback to be taken seriously. The question then becomes why they want it to fail. The only reason I can think of is so they can eventually deem everyone who didn't participate in unlawful possession, charged as such, and thereby ineligible. PAL revocation en masse

1

u/hafetysazard Apr 02 '26

Now they feel entitled to confiscate everyone’s guns for cheap.

9

u/Mrdingus6969 Apr 01 '26

Now how many withdrawals?

8

u/crunchone Apr 02 '26

Good. Fuck em

16

u/SaintDarthVader Apr 01 '26

I logged in to check on my restricted - since they know I have it anyways - expected compensation $0. So what incentive would I have to turn it in even if I agreed with the "buyback"?

5

u/outdoorsaddix Apr 01 '26

It’s probably zero because the last day to declare you want to participate was yesterday.

9

u/SaintDarthVader Apr 01 '26

No this was prior to yesterday - like the 28th or so. Point being even if inclined, it was still a waste of time.

2

u/roguemenace Apr 02 '26

You had to choose turning it in or deactivation for the compensation to show up.

13

u/FedInformant Apr 01 '26

Who are the knobs that complied

2

u/Thegears89 Apr 02 '26

The economy is shit. Some people might need a quick bit of cash

10

u/FedInformant Apr 02 '26

This is the worst possible way to get cash. I certainly won't be quick. Or guaranteed

2

u/Thegears89 Apr 02 '26

I know, but I don't fault people who are in need

-7

u/roguemenace Apr 02 '26

People with restricted that are already registered with the government or broken turkshit shotguns that are somehow AR-15 variants.

9

u/FedInformant Apr 02 '26

Its not mandatory to participate in the buy back. And compensation is not guaranteed. It was obviously important for as few people to participate as possible

21

u/ImCryingTearsOfBlood Apr 01 '26

Liberals failing once again? Surprising.

1

u/WeightedDips95 Apr 02 '26

Dude what do you mean? Carney is a genius. We’re so lucky he took time off from his globalist appointments and Brookefield to fix Canada(it’s not broken though, and if it is, it is due to global circumstances/ it would be worse under the Conservatives).

I don't think they'll go door to door:

  • it's bad optics
  • many police officers also own these models. Are they going to kick their own doors in? Or their partner's?

4

u/grandfundaytoday Apr 02 '26

Police will do what they are told to do.

10

u/Confident-Ad9628 Apr 01 '26

All this is just a buyback for the business owners who got burned by the bans, from what I’ve seen regular gun owners have no interest in making themselves known to law enforcement in any way, and honestly it would probably take the police decades to find and prosecute everyone who isn’t participating, this whole thing still just seems like it has no infrastructure or direction behind it and is all for the optics of it

17

u/mrelephantman1 Apr 01 '26

I'm very doubtful that these firearms even came from individuals. I feel like these are the restricted firearms that were owned by stores and had no other choice and the liberals are clearly trying to say it's from individual people. Like why not tell people where you've got them from doesn't seem very transparent. Almost seems deceitful. Like everything else this government does.

3

u/Jazzlike_Finish123 Apr 01 '26

I’d guess at least 75% of these are from gun stores that have been holding and waiting to get compensated.

-1

u/viccityguy2k Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

I’ll stick my neck out here. I may or may not have a decent size collection. There is one item that was registered as a restricted that was deemed a prohibited safe queen way back with the original OIC in 2020. I have not been able to (legally) use it since. It’s not sentimental to me either.

I logged in when the portal first opened and the ‘expected compensation’ was twice what I paid for it originally. This item auto populated in the system as the government knew about it.

I felt I may as well cash out on this one item while I still can and buy a bolt action I’ve been wanting that shoots the same caliber. So I ‘declared’ it. I haven’t heard anything more yet about it. I figured why not double my money and get something I can shoot anywhere.

I will be making no comments about what I may or may not own non restricted that could be affected.

12

u/Natural_Comparison21 Apr 01 '26

You won’t get that money lol.

2

u/KorporalKarnage Apr 02 '26

That dollar amount you saw was the amount you would have received if the administrative costs were non-existant and you lived in Quebec.

The real amount you will receive is closer to $2.

1

u/Venetian_chachi Apr 04 '26

I know you are not alone. I’m curious about similar circumstances for people in Alberta, where the provincial government is working to fight the confiscation.

This whole thing is so stupid.

APRIL FOOLS!!!!  🥳 🎉 🎊

14

u/HALF-PRICE_ Apr 01 '26

The date has nothing to do with the FOOLS doing this!

3

Can someone refresh my memory, how many guns were on the registry?

3

u/1baby2cats Apr 02 '26

Get ready for another Provost meltdown!

3

u/Thereal_Stormm006 Apr 02 '26

Provost is out of touch

4

u/houstonman526 Apr 02 '26

Can’t believe yall are gonna let this fucker from Sri Lanka come and take your guns from your house.

6

u/rastamasta45 Apr 02 '26

Fucker from Sri Lanka that had to recuse himself from all matters related to a terrorist group due to being too close….

6

u/Due_Statistician1679 Apr 01 '26

I logged on to the buyback site yesterday at 4:30pm. They make you register and then tell you to come back in 10 minutes once authenticated. I tried logging on at 6:02pm after work and they had already shut down the program. I figured I would have until midnight.

Anyway I guess I get to keep my guns. :)
