Misc I’m a active Liberal party member and gun owner. We do exist. AMA.

Post image

I’ll do my best to answer throughout the day, my answers may not be instantaneous.

I’m happy to answer any good faith questions, but please note I’m not here to argue or convince anyone of anything. Just thought it might be interesting to provide insights from my pov since I may not fit the regular mould of most Canadian gun owners.

Mod note: Please treat this user with decorum & respect befitting a fellow Canadian. He has asked the moderators to allow this and we have made a consensus decision to allow it since the subreddit is meant for gun owners across the political spectrum. Please keep disagreements civil and on topic, and do not resort to personal attacks.

Thank you

edit: Since a lot of you didn’t go into the thread. The user isn’t just a liberal gun owner but is an active volunteer in a liberal EDA.

"Hey guys, please treat the dude who supports the people who have actively harmed your way of life nicely, he owns a .22lr so he just like you!!!!!"

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

And he cant wait to "calibrate" it and try it out!

See, he likes guns too!

“Hey guys, I’m one of the people who persecuted your group for 6 years. Treat me with respect, mkay?”

Yeah, this ain’t a fuckin‘ joke. People lost their livelihoods over this shit and had a wonderful part of their lives destroyed for nothing.

Mods, what is this? What the Liberals did to us is not a fucking “oopsies“ or a mild disagreement. They‘re threatening us with serious consequences here. There is no good faith conversation to be had.

22

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26

Speaking for myself only I can totally see the validity of your argument. The liberals have done things in bad faith. They didn’t care about the negative effects they had sport shooters and collectors, basically anyone who isn’t an indigenous hunter. I definitely did not feel heard. They made us criminals-to-be with a stroke of a pen. And you’re right to be mad at that.

Having said all of that, I’m not allowed to let my personal feelings affect the subreddit as a whole. If we get to the point where I start banning or removing posts of people who I disagree with I wouldn’t see myself as Canadian. The mod team decided that this was a meaningful conversation to be had, even if the answer ends up being “there is no common ground between us”.

I hope this provides some clarity.

20

u/MBGLK Mar 30 '26

Do the comments made by the op and the ensuing conversation seem "meaningful" enough to you?

2

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26

If you have some feedback regarding the quality of the AMA we welcome a modmail. I don’t want to let my personal opinion spoil any feedback that you may have or want to provide in relation to this.

I’m sorry I can’t give you a better answer.

20

u/MBGLK Mar 30 '26

That response is a cop-out.

You already made a subjective call by approving the AMA. Pretending you’re staying “neutral” now just means you don’t want to own the result.

Pushing people to modmail = burying criticism instead of addressing it publicly

“Not letting personal opinion interfere” = pretending standards don’t exist after the fact

The AMA itself = low effort, no expertise, no value

If the standard is “any random person can do an AMA,” say it. If there’s supposed to be a quality bar, enforce it.

Right now it’s just inconsistent moderation with zero accountability

3

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

This was not a subjective call. We approved this AMA and we will approve all AMAs that are of sufficient expertise regardless of party affiliation. You already are continuing on a different thread so I will just ask that you continue there but let me be clear this AMA was meant to have expertise.

Pushing you to modmail isn’t burying criticism. I’m one mod. Pushing you to modmail allows you to discuss with the entire mod team. I can’t make calls on behalf of the mod team. I’m just a regular dude.

edit: Just to be clear, please go to modmail. I’m really not trying to brush things under the rug but if you want to make change I’m not empowered to unilaterally change policy via reddit comments. These things need to be discussed with the mod team.

17

u/Visible_Bar_6774 Mar 30 '26

I’d hate to criticize efforts to foster discussion, especially of dissenting views. Is there something about this fella the mod team is aware of that hasn’t been shared here? I’m not sure I see the “sufficient expertise”.

By OPs own admission he bought his first firearm practically yesterday so the expertise isn’t in anything relating to firearms. As far as liberal policy goes he’s mentioned being involved at a local level. That could mean a lot of things but most likely it means he’s participated in a selection vote for his MP, maybe knocked on some doors. This is the level of political expertise the odd politically inspired high schooler could boast.

I appreciate efforts to foster discussion by the mod team, I just fail to see where the added value is to warrant an AMA post over directing OP to the pinned politics thread, at least with the information provided.

Mod Message: Do not call them a "retard". You can repost the comment without the name calling.

In accordance with the subreddit rules, your post/comment has been removed for the following reason:

[1] Disrespectful/Insulting or Hateful Comments

Civility, courtesy, and politeness, is expected within this subreddit. A post or comment may be removed if it's considered in violation of Reddit's RULES, Reddiquette, and User Agreement.

Using negative generalizations on persons based upon their backgrounds, ethnicity, gender, or appearance is subject to comment removal and a possible ban from the subreddit. Keep comments directed at actions, not at individuals.

Racism, bigotry, intolerance, or otherwise extremist posts/comments/behaviour WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in this subreddit. Users doing so will be permanently banned from the subreddit.

2

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26

Thanks for asking, I do think we tripped up here in not leading with the details. It’s under the thread of the pinned comment. This user is a member of a liberal EDA and has provided reasonable verification of their status.

8

u/Visible_Bar_6774 Mar 30 '26

Fair enough. In case you guys are looking for feedback, I’d say this one shouldn’t have met the bar of expertise. For $25 and the patience to attend an AGM anyone can be a member of the liberal party.

Seems like a lot more headache than the value added by having Joe Liberal who just bought his first gun hold a presser in the sub. For what it’s worth I think the reaction to this “transgression” is outsized. The AMA with the former CFO was great, comparatively this is like an AMA with my grandmother on the features of the latest iPhone, except my grandmother has had an iPhone longer than a week.

Regardless, I appreciate the effort to set it up. Can’t know the standards without trying a few out, and having extra discussion is better than not.

1

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26

Not a liberal party member. A liberal EDA. I doubt you can join one for $25 and an AGM.

Do tell, what expertise did the Alberta Separatist AMA you've just approved present?
Have you verified anything about that person? I refuse to believe it was pre-planned.

2

u/Dantheislander Mar 31 '26

Yeah, openinig this one with mods asking people to respect their fellow canadians then approving a separatist looney who doesn't want to be canadian was some overcorrection and a double standard. A mod verified political affiliate and... some wish.com yee haw chap.

6

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

Having said all of that, I’m not allowed to let my personal feelings affect the subreddit as a whole. If we get to the point where I start banning or removing posts of people who I disagree with I wouldn’t see myself as Canadian.

Based as fuck, good on you.

38

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 Mar 30 '26

What do you plan on doing to help legal firearms owners? Are you a CCFR member? What do you plan on doing if they keep making our guns illegal, would you surrender your private property? How important is freedom to you? Why do you vote liberal?

9

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I’m actually trying to lobby the party from within to relax with this unpopular policy already.

31

u/airchinapilot Mar 30 '26

How are you doing this?

32

u/Cager_CA Mar 30 '26

by telling us he's doing it. Show some decorum man! /s

27

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

"Lobby"

OK bud.
Let's wrap this up now. Dead AMA.

2

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 Mar 31 '26

How? And you ignored the rest of the questions…

You literally ‘answered’ like a liberal

35

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

KEEP IT IN THE POLITICS THREAD.
(Unless it aligns with our views, in which case let's make it an AMA - The Mods)

Edit: What credentials or relevance does this person have? Why is this AMA in any way important or of interest to the sub?

They've said in the replies here they just bought their first firearm, a .22LR.
And that gives them status to say "LIBERAL FIREARMS OWNERS EXIST, IM PROOF"

What the actual F....

27

u/MoosedMilk Mar 30 '26

Bro he got his first gun! Hes just like us!

20

u/MBGLK Mar 30 '26

But he desensitized his wife to allow him to purchase a 22 after having a license for 4 years, he's doing the lords work.

21

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

Fuck Liberals and fuck Fudds.

This whole thing is one big sad joke.

Let's see if we can swing some Fudds back to the Liberal party, come on guys, they arent taking ALL the guns.

31

u/Accomplished-Hat3753 Mar 30 '26

Why?

-14

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

What another said: I’m not a single issue voter. Liberal gun policies are dog water, and I would have exited the party and voted con in the last election if Trudeau didn’t step down, but as it stands I’m happy with the overall big-picture direction of the party.

47

u/Accomplished-Hat3753 Mar 30 '26

Do you actually pay attention to what is going on or are you privileged enough the policies have no effect on your life?

33

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

All LPC policies are garbage, friend, that's why every graph of Canadian economic performance looks like a downhill ski slope out in Whistler.

-31

u/KriosXVII Mar 30 '26

Cause people aren't single issue voters and PP remains an unserious dumbass?

27

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

The firearms policy is a symptom, not the problem itself; there are plenty of LPC policies that follow the same formula of "Authoritarian+Illogical+Virtue Signaling=Pandering to Quebec/Special interest group to the detriment of everybody else."

19

u/Accomplished-Hat3753 Mar 30 '26

Yet everything is worse off, its not just firearms rights.

15

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

How's the mainstream media kool-aid today?

11

u/Diflorasone Mar 30 '26

The Federal Liberals run very similar policy to the CPC. The parties are basically indistinguishable at this point.

32

u/FireRisinWith1n Mar 30 '26

Pretty insulting to have a special "AMA" for a "gun owner" who bought his 22. last week, and has voted to ruin our community, while the rest of us have thousands of dollars in paperweights sitting in our safes, slowly watching stores and clubs shutting down while this guy works against us.

Keep it in the politics thread.

11

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

24h before the buy back portal closes too, lol.

0

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

It’s a literal post where I typed AMA at the end. Not an official sub event or anything of the sorts.

17

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

Yeah, the mods have a different opinion apparently going by the stickied comment, and with this thread being set up as an AMA with Answered and Unanswered top level comments.

If you didn't intend in actually engaging, what is the point of your post.

Serious question- knowing how botched the gun thing is and how many lies were involved … you don’t think that they are lying you on other topics as well?

19

u/Cager_CA Mar 31 '26

Hey man,  ol’Carnage said Canada’s the most affordable it’s been in a decade

12

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I think lying (either direct or by omission) is just not a feature of politics that can be rooted out. I have yet to see a successful politician that doesn’t have to bs their way through some topics. As long as in the big scheme of things said politician does more good than the next guy, that’s the most we can hope for.

We may not agree which of our choices is the better option, but I hope we can agree on the general idea that politics overall can be full of shit on all sides.

Btw if you got examples of successful politicians that never lied, I’d love to hear examples!

24

u/milanskiv Mar 30 '26

Yes, all politicians simplify, spin, or avoid answers. that’s politics. But that’s not the same as deliberately misleading people.

As for the example you asked me for, a solid example is Jody Wilson-Raybould. she refused political pressure in the SNC-Lavalin affair & She lost her cabinet position and eventually her place in the Liberal caucus. She stuck to her principles even when it cost her career advancement.

Objective is to strive for better and expect more of the people who lead us. Not just toss hands in the air and go “well they all lie”

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

For all it’s worth I was going to leave the party and vote blue before Trudeau stepped down when he did. I was ready for a change of guard and I was even weary of Carney at first, but I’m currently happy with the way things are going in terms of cleaning up some of the bs.

I’m not one to excuse the crap my own side does, so I fully agree with you that these issues piled up to create an unacceptable leadership team by the end. I personally hope Carney can eventually rotate out of the big sears the entire old guard from the Trudeau era.

18

u/HappyCan7250 Mar 30 '26

Carney talks a big talk, but has done VERY little to actually distance himself from Trudeau era policy and cabinet, outside of a few meaningless MOUs and statements. The ideology behind Trudeau is the exact same ideology driving Carney, and will ultimately continue taking the country down the exact same path. For God's sake, his whole cabinet is essentially unchanged from the Trudeau era. New face, same policy and party.

12

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

That's because the back half of the Trudeau era (since 2020) was Trudeau being advised by Carney through Freeland. They gave Morneau the boot because he "forgot" that he owned a villa in France, and brought in Carney to make sure they all stuffed their pockets using federal policy to funnel money into Brookfield.

Can Liberal voters not see this or they just don't care, as long as their team stays on top?

10

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

Politics is a team sport to them. Who knows why they settled on the Liberals, but they did and its their team. Thats why you can argue in circles with them and theres not an ounce of logic to be found: "muh security clearance!", "PP literaly has no platform", "muh slogans".. and it never makes them think twice.

The ultimate irony is when they say if Carney was a conservative, we would love him. R*tarded on many levels but its just pure projection.

25

u/Enigmatic_Penguin ns Mar 30 '26

Out of curiosity, when did you get your PAL? I've had mine basically since Harper left office, so I've been here for all the BS of the Trudeau era and can't reconcile anyone with any longevity going that route.

-3

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I’ve actually had it for 4 years, but I only now managed to finally desensitize my wife enough for her to be comfortable with us having guns in the house 😅

42

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

If she signed the PAL application form 4 years ago, that's when she gave her consent for you to own and possess firearms.

Plenty of other inferences I could draw from this, but I'll leave it at that.

Yep refuses to address any crictique of the Liberal party claims he can change them when in reality he has no actual power.

25

u/Ok-Yogurt-42 Mar 30 '26

OP, could we get some more substantive answers? I've read through everything you've responded with so far and it's pretty vague and shallow.
Mainly all you've said is that you're not a 1 issue voter and you'd like to change LPC policy from the inside.
Can we get some specifics or rationals? What issues? How are you trying to change policy? Or could you answer the many other questions that aren't directly related to those two answers?

27

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

it's pretty vague and shallow.

This is all the evidence I needed to know that this person is in fact a Liberal party member.

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I write what I can during breaks at work so my apologies if some answers were rushed. A couple more specifics about why I’m still a Liberal in the Carney era (almost left before Trudeau stepped down):

  • I suspected (and seem to have been correct) that Carney would know how to rebuild and diversify our international trade away from the US in the context where the US has become unreliable.

  • I wanted to give a new, well experienced potential Liberal leader the chance to speed up infrastructure and defense spending without deregulating environmental protections too fast.

Are these types of answers more substantive?

Edit, to answer what I’m doing:

I got involved at the local level to help our riding find a more centrist-minded candidate for the next election and help flip my riding in the context where we (those involved in the process) could send to Ottawa an MP that will keep our local needs in mind when they join a caucus that would normally dismiss the yelling from across the isle on this issue.

25

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

No, they're liberal talking points that are demonstrably playing out as ineffective.
You had a guy with no political experience, a rocky and shady corporate and financial background, who didn't even first try to get a seat buy/influence his way to not just the party leadership but the position of prime minister. Then kicked an MP out of the riding they held, who's son worked for Brookfield...

Do Liberal MPs seriously not see this as deeply insulting to their own service to the party and work as MPs?

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I mean… Does PP really have a moral high ground here after kicking an MP out of Alberta due to the loss of his own riding?

21

u/Ok-Yogurt-42 Mar 30 '26

The difference is the CPC MP voluntarily agreed while the LPC MP was forcibly ejected.

→ More replies (6)

15

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

If whataboutism is your response to a fairly serious accusation we're done here.

Pierre had his riding redrawn by the Liberals to include a huge part of Ottawa home to a very large number of public servants.
He was only ever going to lose his riding once they did that. It's literally by design.

10

u/Ok-Yogurt-42 Mar 30 '26

Partially.
The first is just a polite way of expressing the usual "USA/Trump bad, elbows up" sentiment. Most of us already know that's why people voted for Carney so there's little insight gained there.
The second is better. You're explaining that you wanted to expand defense and the economy, something the CPC campaigned extensively on, but you have environmental concerns which held you back. That does explain some of the what and why.

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

I disagree with your take on the first point, though the sentiment is real because Trump did try to destroy entire Canadian industries. I assumed we’d be able to agree on the premise above regarding the US attempt at wrecking our economy to build up theirs.

Idk if this is the sub to turn the question back around and ask you how you view this, but I hope that at least by clarifying the above you can see that I’m genuinely making an effort to add substance here even if we disagree on the arguments.

So I could reword that first point to be “as long as we agree that the next leader had to figure out a way to protect our industries, I believe Carney has more experience and contacts necessary for playing that game than Poilievre does.”

And if we don’t agree on the premise, then at least you got some insight on the genuine beliefs I am operating from. I always made an attempt to not be an “orange man bad” NPC where Trump could cure cancer and still be the bad guy, but it’s really hard to find any redeeming qualities in that guy from where I stand, and based on how his actions affect us.

4

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 31 '26

I suspected (and seem to have been correct) that Carney would know how to rebuild and diversify our international trade away from the US in the context where the US has become unreliable.

A bunch of trips arounds the world and non-binding MOUs doesn't mean shit regardless of how much you pretend they have any value.

51

u/Nautaloid Black Powder Enjoyer Mar 30 '26

I’ll start with the obvious here: how do you support a party that actively fights to turn you into a criminal for having a particular hobby?

I’m not exactly a hardcore Conservative myself, and I personally hold a lot of more liberal views, but the Canadian Liberal party will never get my vote due to how godawful their stance on firearms is, notwithstanding anything else I disagree with. I’m curious to hear your reasoning as to how you can still get behind them.

23

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 30 '26

guns are "just a hobby" to him is my guess

-4

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

2 answers:

  1. I’m a multi-issue voter, so guns are one of many issues.

  2. Based on internal party infrastructure, it’s actually easier to try and sway the Liberal party from within than the Conservative party on any issues I disagree with on their platforms. So I’d rather be part of a party where my dissent on specific issues carries more weight.

29

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

Unless you're donating and bringing in significant money to the Liberal Party coffers - you carry no weight.
If you ARE doing that - maybe lead with that information when you do an AMA.

11

u/Nautaloid Black Powder Enjoyer Mar 30 '26

That’s kinda what I expected you to answer with. There’s somehow these other issues that are more important than a massive waste of taxpayer money and potential criminalization of millions of Canadians for merely owning certain models of guns. Have the Liberals even done good on these other issues? Good enough to still support them despite what they’re doing?

I wish you were right and that dissent mattered, but we’ve seen them continue to push this shitty “buyback” through. Without losing an election they don’t care to change, and even if they lose I’m not sure if they’d change their stance on guns, it seems pretty baked in to the party.

20

u/Natural_Comparison21 Mar 30 '26
  1. What are those issues that the liberals do better that another party does not do? Like I can respect voting for other parties but the liberals are down right awful.

  2. Really? How’s that working out for the pro gun members of the liberal party? Should more gun owners join the liberal party membership to change there views on guns or?

8

u/arthor Mar 30 '26

it's sad to me how divisive politics are becoming.. entire political worldviews based entirely on your guns getting banned.. this is why its so easy to sway votes when people care about one thing. I feel like this sub spends more time researching copium mods to their guns than what's going on in the world..

11

u/Nautaloid Black Powder Enjoyer Mar 30 '26

Dude, they’re wasting billions of taxpayer dollars on a confiscation program that they admit is worthless and a complete waste of money. They are potentially making millions of Canadians into criminals while ignoring real gun crime. That’s not merely a little policy screwup that should be ignored. The Liberal party loves their divisive politics and fucking over gun owners, and nobody should support them while they’re pushing this bullshit.

22

u/Saucy__Intruder Mar 30 '26

Do you support Removing bill c21 and the Subsequent OICs banning "Assault style firearms"

Are you in favor in removing further restrictions on firearm ownership?

Why or why not?

4

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Yes. Just because I’m a lib doesn’t mean I agree with everything they do. This topic is among the worst polices of my party.

13

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

Pretty much all the policies are the worst of the party. Like do tell me how bringing in neo slaves the last few years has helped Canada besides the rich like Carney.

16

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 30 '26

How old are you? How long ago did you buy a house?

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Early 30s, bought my house 4 years ago, no help from fam. Though I did get lucky with some early investments in life that got me to the amount for a downpayment. I come from a lower-middle class family but I’ve been thrifty af my whole life.

13

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 31 '26

I’ll concede that I improperly profiled you, though you’re still deeply misguided. Happy for you that you somehow managed to scrape together a life in this hellscape.

2

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

Thank you! And I can live with others thinking I’m misguided, that can always be fixed. Which part do you find misguided though, if you don’t mind me asking?

15

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 31 '26

That you think the same Liberal policies that have objectively destroyed the youth of this country and our standard of living are the way forward

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

Yeah fair enough, that one’s easier to discuss over a couple of pints irl than in the comments section. I do hope you get to chat with someone with my views one day and exchange points of view.

I for one am putting myself in situations like these irl as well to have my own views challenged and to continue having ever more informed opinions from across the spectrum.

Everyone for the most part does what they think is the right thing. 99.99% of people are trying to be the good guys in their own world.

12

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

"Yeah fair enough, that one’s easier to discuss over a couple of pints irl than in the comments section."

As another user said you do realize this is an AMA not an ask me some things and the rest you can do over a couple of pints irl.

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

Yeah I’m happy to answer, but if the full stance requires essays, it’s probably not going to get across to the intended audience anyways due to the size of the text. I can expand here and there, but to debate the claim about Liberal policies “destroying the youth”, we’re going way off course from the general theme of this sub. I can acknowledge his pov while also respectfully staying on topic.

I for one will lend no credibility to the idea that there are any real gun enthusiasts who would vote for this disaster of a government, only folks like OP who can't wait to get out and "calibrate" their new Rugger.

-6

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Nope, just trying to provide some insights

18

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

When do you plan on starting to provide those? Because so far your answers have been nothing if not vapid.

36

u/canuckguy89 Mar 30 '26

How to do you rationalize the cognitive dissonance that comes with essentially being a “chicken that supports KFC” ? Honest good faith question

10

u/GFN_good_for_nothing Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

Not OP but chiming in as someone who has voted for multiple parties in my lifetime. Political parties and people are both complex, multifaceted entities and unfortunately we have to swallow our distaste and take the good with the bad as most of us can’t just choose a single party that supports all the same views that we do across the board. I’m bi and in a relationship with a guy I would like to marry. In my parents’ lifetime the majority of the Conservative Party voted against legalizing homosexuality, in my lifetime I’ve voted liberal because I believe that queer couples should have the right to marriage. Every generation has a queer rights issue where the conservatives swear up and down that if we support it as a people it’s going to mean the corruption and destruction of the youth(and sometimes society in general), but lo and behold none of the advances we’ve made in queer rights over the years have destroyed our society yet. Despite having an abysmal track record on these issues, conservatives will still push the narrative that “this time the gays have ACTUALLY gone too far, it’s not going to age like shit and make you look like a homophobe to your grandkids, we swear for realsies this time!”. Conversations with my conservative peers on these issues tend to devolve into discussions of baseless conspiracy theories about litterboxes in classrooms with people who swear that they only want to protect kids from harm, but refuse to acknowledge the terrible crimes of the church in favour of insisting drag queens are the real threat with no evidence to back up their clams. The same baseless fear tactics that we laugh at the liberals for using to push things like say, bad gun policy, work on conservatives every generation as well. If I were to support a party that as a majority has historically opposed every single right that I as a queer person have, wouldn’t I be a “chicken for KFC”? IMO things aren’t so black and white 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 31 '26

In my parents’ lifetime the majority of the Conservative Party voted against legalizing homosexuality

Bud, being gay hasn't been criminalized in this country since 1969, the current Conservative Party of Canada didn't even exist then. As far as gay marriage, you're arguing about the semantic meaning of a word, 20+years ago the CPC was fine with all couples having all the same rights under a civil union, the debate was simply over the meaning of a word; who cares either way? I certainly don't, I'm straight and my partner and I never "got married" because it's meaningless outside of religion, but we've been together for 20 years and have all the same rights as if we had.

The rest of your rant I'm not going to comment on because I'm desperately trying to abide by the subreddit rules against being mean.

2

u/GFN_good_for_nothing Mar 31 '26

Well I imagine we’ve had very different lives and we clearly have very different opinions but I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond regardless. Take care and have a nice day 🤙

-17

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I’m quite against the Liberal gun policies. I also think Carney is low-key forced by internal pressures to stick to the policies but deep down doesn’t believe in them either. Guns are just not the only overall political topic though, so I overall still align more with the Liberal party than the Conservatives big-picture wise.

18

u/canuckguy89 Mar 30 '26

That’s totally fair - but the gun issue specifically is almost like a non starter imo- it’s beyond policy, they are actively trying to vilify and patronize a good chunk of the population while gaslighting the rest of it into the same

0

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Yep, agreed. And that’s why we need a few folk to try and fix their stance from within.

16

u/Natural_Comparison21 Mar 30 '26

You keep saying that but do you really think you can compete with the anti gun lobby that is Poly?

0

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

That’s the most serious challenge to overcome… I don’t know how we will pull that off yet, but since I know my views aren’t unique within the party, I’m hoping that over the next few years more open discussions and debates will be had internally to move the needle.

At the end of the day it starts with citizens getting involved to promote their interests, and that’s what I’m doing. Time will tell if I’ll have any success with it.

11

u/Natural_Comparison21 Mar 30 '26

It is the challenge to overcome. You literally have to out lobby a decades old lobby group.

Simple. You get as many pro gun liberals as you can who are part of the party and keep sending messages over and over to the liberal party to change there ways. But you need teeth in that argument. So you should threaten to vote for the NDP if they refuse to change.

I would be willing to bet money that you as a individual can somehow out influence Poly.

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Lol I’m wayyy more likely to vote blue than orange.

7

u/Natural_Comparison21 Mar 30 '26

Then threaten to vote blue instead of orange then.

13

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

Does that "big-picture" include the government having the power to force ISPs, utilities, and banks to cut off service from a person while also prohibiting said companies from informing that person as to why their service has been removed, rendering an appeal impossible?

How can you trust this party, that in your view has enough "internal pressure" to force the PM to go along with a non-sensical firearms confiscation program that violates property rights and criminalizes law abiding citizens, not to violate other citizens rights as well when it becomes politically convenient?

7

u/airchinapilot Mar 30 '26

The gun policy seems really irrational. Do you really think there could be a tipping point where Carney's group feels keeping it too dumb to support vs the value they get from the party core?

Do you feel it really is just the Quebec vote or is support for gun policy more widespread than just Quebec?

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

That’s exactly my hope. It’s a big tent party, so naturally there will be a few factions within. If we can figure out how to make this a non-issue for QC (which unfortunately libs need a stronghold in), then the problem would practically solve over time. It’s in nobody’s interest to dig our heels in a hot button topic, unless we’re kind of stuck into it.

1

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 31 '26

This may be the single dumbest answer you've given, and that's saying a lot. " If we can figure out how to make this a non-issue for QC," buddy most of the Quebec population who pays attention is against this shit like the rest of us, all this does is appease fucking Poly and a few retards in Montreal.

https://www.reddit.com/r/modguide/comments/dch9de/a_guide_to_amas/

An “AMA” is a common event that takes place both inside and outside of Reddit. “AMA” stands for “Ask me anything”. It is an event where creators, celebrities, public figures, or regular folk with interesting experiences or specific knowledge, and the like can answer any questions the general public has within a certain timeframe.

Or we could just let rando's with nothing to offer do them.

2

u/AdeptArt Mar 30 '26

as was previously explained elsewhere we thought that someone with experience in an EDA qualified as someone with interesting experiences or specific knowledge.

13

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

If they had a PAL before the OICs and were in the same boat as many of us looking at losing our property to a party that has pushed this policy through by fear mongering and praying on emotions, I might be able to look past the weak bonafides.

Replies here show they got PAL in 2022 and only just purchased their own firearm.

26

u/AppearanceAfraid Mar 30 '26

Pls bro libs on your side bro, I own guns too bro I'm just like you bro, Carney is our savior bro, keep letting us destroy your lives bro, we're actually on your side bro, I'll lobby the libs from within bro

13

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

"Just comply bro, turn in your guns bro. After tomorrow you won't get anything bro. We can get them back later bro I swear, Carney didn't want to do this, he HAD to."

7

u/Admirable-Site7256 Mar 30 '26

Insert the "How do you do fellow gun owners?" meme

9

u/swift_gilford Mar 30 '26

Do you agree with the gun legislation that has been passed since the 2020 OIC.

If yes, why? If not, have you actually reached out to your party regarding it?

11

u/waitwhatnothing Mar 30 '26

I guess the obvious question is simply, do you think the current government is doing a good job on the gun file? Do you support the buyback and the prohibition of firearms under the OICs? Do you support C-21 and the handgun freeze?

If the answer to any of the above is “no”, are you trying at all to influence the parties policy? Why continue to support them?

If the answer is yes, I’m curious as to why. I don’t think I’ve talked to anyone who owns guns or is even familiar with the details of Canadian firearms laws and supports these measures, regardless of what end of the political spectrum they are on.

-1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I generally share the sentiments of this sub regarding the dog water ways in which the govt handles guns at the moment, and am disappointed that Carney upheld the buyback program. But I suspect his hands were somehow tied, and I’m otherwise happy with how he’s navigating all the current external threats to our country.

I’m definitely pro-globalism as far as economics go, so from that pov I have a hard time voting for the conservatives just to get our guns unbanned.

9

u/TheGoldShipper Mar 30 '26

Like how the liberals just decided there’s a business case for LNG now after saying it was false for years? We’d be far more prepared to bargain and navigate external threats if we had listened to the call for our resources years ago.

6

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

"But I suspect his hands were somehow tied, and I’m otherwise happy with how he’s navigating all the current external threats to our country."

Trump threatens our sovereignty Carney I will disarm the peons. Yes truly a great way of handlining a threat plus globalism is horrible at defending a nations sovereignty. Outsourcing everything so some people can be exploited somewhere elsewhere while having no means to make anything yourself. Globalism is a diease people and nations should be as self sufficent as possible relying on other nations only for what you can't reasonably make yourself like bananas in Canada's case.

u/Flat-Dark-Earth Big Bore Specialist Mar 30 '26

How low on your list of political priorities is gun ownership?

→ More replies (2)

9

u/KalashnikovParty Mar 30 '26

I used to be quite liberals in my beliefs but the party has done nothing but push me away. While i dont completely agree with the conservative party either i dont feel like they are actively trying to demonize a gun owner like myself. If anything I recommend you suggest the liberals do better. Gun owners are not the problem here, and it is extremely insulting when liberals imply we are the biggest problem

8

u/CanadianRunner03 Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

Ive read some of your comments and replies and this is what i think

I really doubt you have any power to do anything, especially dealing with the liberals and this whole idea of you “lobbying”. do you have hundreds of thousands of dollars to start paying liberals? , I feel like your doing this to find sympathy from gun-owners that you fucked over by your voting choices. Not to mention with your voting choices you made many people here criminals over night which is shameful to do to your fellow Canadians.

And it’s crazy that you think carney is going to do anything good for the working class in this country. He has still pretty much all the same ministers from the Trudeau era, we’re still getting fucked on taxes, youth unemployment/unemployment, foreign interference from India and china, not to mention the killings India has done on our soil, failure to secure our border, failing to investigate people over staying there visas, major brain drain in this country and people are leaving to the US for a better job market and failure on banking in Canadas natural Resources.

7

u/Fed_Informant Mar 31 '26

Uh, I commend you for proclaiming this out loud. It's certainly a choice to be a liberal voter

An incredibly stupid one, in my opinion. A living, breathing, walking example of hypocrisy personified.

I genuinely want to ask. What have the liberals done that warrants your vote?

What have they provided us in the last decade? Have they done anything positive?

8

u/AppearanceAfraid Mar 31 '26

Something something trump, something something Carneys a great business man doing good trade deals, something something elbows up

7

u/Visible_Bar_6774 Mar 30 '26

I talk with a number of “liberal gun owners”. I always find their perception of firearms ownership to be very different from my own, particularly those from central Canada. Their policy prescriptions are most indicative of this, so I’ll ask:

If you had control of the firearms policy in Canada, could modify the act/program in any way, total carte blanche. How would you modify it and why?

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I’d start slowly, first by reverting back to the pre-Trudeau era policies. From there, I’d honestly have to consult the data and see if it’s safe to roll things back any more than that without damaging our gun owners’ reputation as being the most law-abiding voter group.

I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I got all the answers. I’m confident that the way the policies were before the 2020s were safe enough to just revert immediately to them though, and would work my way from there.

Deep down I respect the US’s 2A but I don’t think I wanna bring here the headaches that come with the 2A, but I’d certainly be interested in codifying gun ownership into a bit more of a right and less of a privilege as long as we can keep our gun owners’ crime stats as low as they’ve been throughout my adult life.

11

u/Visible_Bar_6774 Mar 30 '26

That’s about the answer I was expecting barring the 2A bit. I’m not going to criticize your politics or the way you vote, I’m sure there is a fair bit we could agree on, but I am going to be honest with you.

It doesn’t appear obvious to me that you know much about firearms or firearms policy and the issues that surround it. I don’t think you have much to offer for a more formalized discussion format like an AMA which typically revolves around some sort of expertise or prestige. This could have stayed in the regular politics thread, though I can respect the willingness to put your ideas out for critique.

That said, I’ll avoid discussing specific policy. What does more of a right, less of a privilege look like to you? This statement combined with the previous comment on protecting the reputation of gun owners reads to me like loosening licensing and education requirements for ownership. Is this the direction you were getting at?

2

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

I’d keep the education requirements along with the RCMP nightly checks intact, but I think if people can prove they’re responsible, sane adults, they should have way, WAY less restrictions on guns they can buy, mag capacities, etc.

Protecting the reputation of gun owners would be done by keeping the parts of the system that got us that reputation to begin with.

Making it more of a right than a privilege means as long as we prove to be sane and responsible, govt shouldn’t have to tell us what we can own.

6

u/Penguinbotxv Mar 30 '26

Name a gun you wish you owned pre ban and explain.

12

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

They'll get back to you after they've first googled what was legal pre-OICs

-4

The AK47 because it’s historically badass. I know it’s been banned for decades (I think?). Specifically pre-latest bans from the 2020s, I’d like to own a glock 19.

Edit: I know, I’m basic.

It was OIC prohib in 1992, by the Mulroney/Campbell government.

Tis decades though in a literal sense. 34 years now.

Isn't that an assault style rifle, the kind that only has one purpose, to kill as many people in as little time as possible?

12

u/ChaoticDNA Mar 30 '26

Can you identify what policies that the CPC have that prevent you from voting for them?

As a gun owner myself, I cannot vote CPC because of their policies on other areas. I think it is easy for people to forget most folks aren't single issue voters. There are lines in the sand on some policies (IE: Economics, Social Policy, etc.) that are more important than a single issue like Gun Control which is why it may look like someone is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

9

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

I'm curious to see an answer to your question from OP but also you, though I totally understand waiting until OP answers so they can't just quote your answer.

-3

u/ChaoticDNA Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

I don't mind answering as I suspect my reasons are different.

I'm transgender. I simply cannot support a party that does not support my right to live my life peacefully and with the people I love, nor one that supports provincial parties stripping parental rights, forcing dysphoria on kids which has been documented to cause suicidal thoughts and acts, and denying healthcare based on magical thinking not empirical science.

Please note - this isn't an invitation to discuss these policies as they aren't gun related, nor am I remotely interested in discussing them here or anywhere - I'm too old, and have no fucks left to give.

EDIT - thanks for the Reddit Cares report stranger. Mental health is an important thing, and while I appreciate the concern, please use it in cases where people are genuinely showing signs of distress.

11

u/Travelingtroopers Mar 30 '26

"I made arguments about things that aren't happening but I think are, but dont counter point me! Im too old and have no fucks left to give!"

11

u/TheeDirtyToast Mar 30 '26

Totally true.

"The worst CPC policies are the ones I made up in my head, so instead I vote for the guys who idolize China."

5

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

I simply cannot support a party that does not support my right to live my life peacefully and with the people I love

The question was about specific policies, can you name specific CPC policies that would remove your right to peacefully live your life?

-6

u/ChaoticDNA Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

How about the fact PP just supported the IOC decision to ban transgender athletes from the olympics?

EDIT - Indirectly, but they also voted against stripping religious groups of hate speech protections. Those provisions are explicitly used by religious groups to attack the people I love and care about.

8

u/Ok-Yogurt-42 Mar 30 '26

They aren't banned, they just have to compete as their biological sex.

6

u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 30 '26

A) That's a tweet, not a specific party policy, and B) even if it was, males being ineligible to compete in female sports divisions doesn't prevent you from peacefully living your life or infringe on your rights any more than the hormone therapy I require making me ineligible for competitive sports divisions does.

So, again, can you identify specific COC policies that would prevent you from peacefully living your life?

5

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

There’s quite a bunch, but to name a few:

  • deregulation for infrastructure development the way cons wanna do it is dangerous imo. Libs are currently undoing some of their ow red tape which is great, though they’re still slow. Would rather slow and steady than do what Elon did in the states with DOGE and just cut things before they realize the consequences.

  • Harper tried to create a 2-tier of citizenships before, I don’t trust they won’t try again. This is a whole debate on its own, but this to me was a huge point of distrust.

  • I’m generally pretty progressive up to a point, and while I don’t agree with some of the gender debates coming from my side, I’d rather stay on this side than team up with factions of the conservative party that wanna roll back abortion and other policies.

  • On economy I’m pro-globalism. I’d entertain the conservative agenda if instead of cutting both taxes AND spending, they’d only cut spending. Otherwise they’ll drive us into the same hole but we’ll feel good on the way about paying less tax yet suffering from a lack of social safety nets.

  • last but not least, even if I were more centre-right than I am, I’d still be weary of joining the conservative party as long as their internal policies discourage dissent. Internal dissent is important to keep a party from living in a bubble. The liberal party has a ton of internal dissent, which I find to be imperative for major parties in a democracy.

10

u/GoGetInvolved Mar 31 '26

No offence but some of these are disconnected from actual realities and internal culture in both parties. The abortion restriction wing of the CPC is small, the abortion ban wing is tiny, the leader is pro-choice, and the party policy is no restrictions. The LPC encouraged tax cuts and spending increases which is even worse than tax cuts and spending cuts, though now some cuts are coming too. The CPC has a ton of internal dissent and debate on policy issues, arguably the most of any party.

I think you have an idea of the CPC that is more Liberal talking point than reality.

9

u/airchinapilot Mar 30 '26

Can you tell us more about your particular riding makeup. Do you actually get Liberal party supporters who are in favor of the gun ban or bring it up as one of the things they really care about?

-1

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

Don’t wanna give too much but I’m in a blue Ontario riding that may get challenged come next election.

I think if we can move the party from within to ease up on the gun polices, it would attract a bunch of voters on the fence towards our side.

7

u/airchinapilot Mar 30 '26

That doesn't really answer my question. To clarify: do any fellow Liberal party supporters in your circle actually bring up the gun ban as something important that the party should continue beating the drum over?

2

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

I’ve only met a couple so far that care about guns at the local level. That’s 2 more than I expected. Definitely not a huge taking point, but I was positively shocked to realize most of the ambivalent folks I bring this up to are actually open to changing their minds.

Edit: Sorry, I just realized I probably still didn’t clarify enough. I actually have yet to meet any liberals in my area who are happy with the gun bans. I’ve met some in past years when I lived in a different riding, and they were generally the NDP-leaning liberals who just voted strategically. Everyone I’ve met in the last couple of years either agrees with me that this is going too far (though as I said, still small amount of folks), or are generally neutral.

3

u/Dickey313 Mar 30 '26

I haven’t read all your replies so apologies if you’ve already touched on this, I’m curious as to your thoughts on the Liberals push for authoritarian policies, like limits on freedom of speech, censorship and surveillance (and obviously the gun bans/confiscation, which I know you have answered) that seem a lot more akin to Bush era republican policies (Patriot Act) than to liberal policies. I agree with the (stated) intention of a lot of the bills, I want everyone to be kinder to each other and I want to enable police to catch bad guys, but they seem to always be written in a way that just strips away freedoms from citizens and grants the government an uncomfortable level of power. It’s scary to me to see people who get riled up (rightfully) about the Trump administrations use of things like Palantir but they either don’t notice or care that their own government is doing to same thing.

0

u/frenglish_man Mar 30 '26

When I first picked the Liberals as the party I supported as a young man, Harper’s erosions of rights and freedoms played a huge part in my decision. I stayed along the way as more variables became important in my mental model of the Canadian political world, while also realizing they’re all atrocious with keeping their own powers in check.

So yeah that part sucks, and Trudeau overstepped enough for me to end my party activities for a few years. But Carney gives me hope that Liberals can learn from their mistakes more efficiently than the Dems down south.

7

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

"But Carney gives me hope that Liberals can learn from their mistakes more efficiently than the Dems down south."

Expect they really haven't like can you name one thing of actual substance he has done? And no I don't consider the carbon tax and getting rid of it of substance I consider it hypocrtical to carneys previously stated views.

2

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

The LNG exports deals are pretty huge tbh…

7

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

For a select few who'll get rich off it while the rest of us get dick all. They'll likely pay barely any taxes and what taxes they do pay will go to stupid shit like this gun ban instead of unfucking our absurd cost of living in the form of housing, food, and pretty much every single product in this nation.

2

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

I mean you asked me for one thing of actual substance, I gave you one. There’s also the 2% NATO spending, and (finally) the massive boost in heavy metals exports such as uranium to name a couple more.

These are all very much Conservative agenda policies btw. It’s weird to see conservatives criticize these ones.

4

u/InitialAd4125 Mar 31 '26

"I mean you asked me for one thing of actual substance, I gave you one. There’s also the 2% NATO spending, and (finally) the massive boost in heavy metals exports such as uranium to name a couple more."

"These are all very much Conservative agenda policies btw. It’s weird to see conservatives criticize these ones."

I'm not conservative hence the cristicsm frankly all of these are rather patheic in reality. Nato spending great so we can last 2 seaconds instead of one in case someone decides to invade us? Like none of these things benefit the regular working Canadian. Where are the massive housing projects I remember them promising where is the cheaper food I remember being told to judge Carney by. Hell my ass could come up with better solutions then what they've been putting out.

5

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 31 '26

2% of NATO spending reached by doing things like moving the Canadian Coast Guard under the DND...

Under NATO's guidelines for defense spending, a coast guard has to be armed and deployable to conflict zones to be counted. Ours is not

7

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 30 '26

Harpers erosions of rights...
Are you completely blind to Bill C-8, C-9, C-22 ??

8

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 31 '26

Isn't the point of your thread to AMA? I'm replying to your points, in the spirit of an AMA.

3

u/Dickey313 Mar 31 '26

Admittedly I probably look at the Harper era through rose coloured glasses, both because of the disaster that was Trudeau and back then I was more traditionally conservative as opposed to leaning more libertarian now. What were the policies you found were eroding freedoms? I know I can just use ChatGPT just curious as to your experience

That was my hope when he got elected as well, I didn’t vote for him but I pegged him as someone who would be more focused on the economy but between doubling down on the gun bans, doubling down on defending the use of the emergencies act, as well as bills like C-2, C-8, C-22 etc, the party around under his leadership him seems to be just as bad as the Trudeau era

6

u/Cager_CA Mar 31 '26

You said you wanted to change the Liberal policy on guns from within but how do you reconcile that stance with the fact your party is actively attempting to subvert the minority government mandate handed to them by the Canadian people?.    They don’t care about democracy or voting or mandates,  they just want to rule as they see fit

Why would they even bother listening to you?.

1

u/frenglish_man Mar 31 '26

I don’t see how the floor crossings are relevant here.

I'm assuming you intend to use the mechanisms within the Liberal party, one of which would be voting. But they've shown they don't really respect the results of voting. That's why it's relevant

Right… I see your point, though I’d also like to point out none of what’s happening here is unprecedented (floor crossings have been very common throughout history), and they’re technically playing by the rules.

And sure, what if I get this issue on the floor of the next convention, pass it, and they ignore it? It’s completely possible, and I hope a media shitstorm follows. But it’s worth trying something else than to sit across the metaphorical isle and shout into the abyss.

Can you name three instances in Canadian history where a majority has been formed by floor crossing?.

You’re a brave man coming in here

It wasn’t as bas as I braced for. Still brutal, but the tenseness didn’t get personal and I appreciate that about those who interacted today, even if they don’t appreciate me 😅

Good on you for doing this.

The way you vote is problematic to what I want to see done in this country in a variety of areas, but that does not mean we can't be friends in other areas like firearm ownership.

I do encourage people like you especially to voice your opinion to your Liberal MP or candidate, and I do respect that you are not a single issue voter.

Thanks! I genuinely believe more liberal voters becoming gun owners is the most likely way to get this craziness solved before the decade is over.

I won't even go as far as saying become owners. If one just doesn't like guns, that is cool! Just understand how the program works and how the Liberal Party is preying on ignorance and lying to their voter base.

u/frenglish_man Hey, I am a resident of Canada and soon I will be a citizen. I come from a family in which gun and shooting culture has been very normal. Like we go for hunting or recreational shooting. And this has been a sour point for me.

For being immigrant, supporting liberals comes naturally. They made Harper era two tier citizenship an election issue and removed those issues. This was a big thing for me. They also support an equal healthcare system -- something close to my heart.

But Liberals are totally stupid when it comes to firearm policy and give too much space to idiots likes Nathely. I mean serious why even associate with a moron like her?

For me this has been a major sticky point. And a reason I tend to like NDP a bit more. Especially after departure of that criminal Jagmeet Singh.

If Liberals can dump Provost and revert C-21 / OICs, I will be the happiest camper and will not vote for anyone. I agree with them on so many issues but firearms is major deal breaker for me.

Actually in that regards, I like PPC the most. They support self defence and home defence as use case of gun ownership and want to bring in proper castle doctrine.
