Forgive my ignorance, but even when buying non-restricted, is it documented and traceable who has bought what?

u/BlackElmyr Mar 29 '26

I'm no lawyer, but the government should have no idea what non-restricted tools you bought anytime before late in Justin's rule. Though I know some of my buys from over a decade ago were hand written to paper in the sellers in store books.

I'm pretty sure they now get informed about any new firearms purchases.

I'm pasting something here from a search. Hpefully this doesn't break any rules. It's an AI overview that I haven't verified all parts of so be warned. Though it sounds right from what I remember.

As of May 18, 2022, and continuing into 2026, the federal government is not directly notified of every single non-restricted firearm purchase (i.e., there is no live, instantaneous central database update for every sale). However, the government has implemented a system that serves a similar function by requiring businesses to keep detailed, long-term records that are accessible to law enforcement.

Here is the breakdown of the current system:

Mandatory Licence Verification: When buying a non-restricted firearm from a business, the vendor must contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Registrar to verify the buyer's Possession and Acquisition License (PAL).

Reference Number: The seller receives a reference number for the transaction, which must be kept, confirming the seller verified the PAL.

Business Records: Businesses are mandated to keep records of all non-restricted firearm sales (including buyer info, firearm make, model, and serial number) for 20 years.

Police Access: Law enforcement can access these business records with "reasonable grounds," which often requires a warrant or judicial authorization.

Key Distinctions:

"Hidden Registry" Concern: Many gun owners and advocates describe this as a "proxy" or "hidden" registry because, while not in a single federal database at the moment of sale, the data is recorded and stored, effectively tracking the ownership of new non-restricted firearms.

Private Sales: The federal requirement for license verification and record-keeping currently applies to businesses, not private individual-to-individual sales, though proponents of the law intended it to cover all transfers.

Record Destruction: The regulations require businesses to forward records to the Registrar if they close, and the Registrar can destroy them after 20 years.

In summary, while the federal government does not receive a digital notification of every purchase in real-time, they have mandated a system where the information is recorded by retailers and accessible to them.

Thank you for this detailed reply. It sounds about as I feared, that they can track everything anyone gets now and if they prohibit them they know where to go. This is WRONG for non restricted. Since they can move the goalposts to suit their corrupt agenda

u/BlackElmyr Mar 29 '26

Yep. Governments no matter party, do what they do, because they can.

1

u/AlphaMikeFoxtrot87 Mar 29 '26

Then it is our duty to resist all the more. They work for us and these changes are not our will
