Misc It does work.

Glad it intimidated the others into domestication
Also case in point that shotgun barrel length has little to no effect on projectile velocity, unlike rifle and pistol calibres.

Has a huge impact on spread and range though. And velocity does drop a bit with really short barrels (2-300fps) so less impact than rifle or pistols.

It has negligible impact on spread. Choke does that. A 12” Mod choked barrel will spread at the same rate as a 30” Mod choked barrel, the spread just starts ever so slightly sooner. It does have a small impact on range, because of velocity, but nobody is using a 12” shotgun to hunt so velocity is a bit of a moot point. Mostly due to sight radius and pointability but a 12” is more suited to home defense.

What am I looking at in OP

u/Boattailfmj Mar 27 '26
Personally I've shot grouse with a 12" Turkish delight shotty. They didn't fly away

nobody is obviously hyperbole given the OP, but very few people use a barrel that short to hunt at ranges that velocity would hurt kill/wound rates

I beg to differ about the spread. When preparing for turkey hunting, same gun, same turkey choke, same shells, one with 18in barrel and the other 28in and it made a huge difference at 35yds
-1
u/cumbrad Mar 27 '26
If the spread was that different, your 18” barrel was likely cylinder or imp cyl, which is most common for short barrels but swappable choke and tighter choke short barrels do exist, and your 28” was likely a tighter choke.
1
u/SpinachStunning5547 Mar 27 '26
Like I said if you read carefully, was using the same turkey choke on both barrels..
-2
u/cumbrad Mar 27 '26
if it was exactly the same choke, worse kill rates would be caused by poor velocity from shot at those ranges rather than different spread.

u/SpinachStunning5547 Mar 27 '26
It was litterally a pattern test multiple shells tried with same choke. The only variant was the barrel length. I could see the spread being way tighter on the 28 vs the 18 for every shell.

Has a huge impact on spread and range though
Most short Turkish shotguns have chokes- including this one- so no, it really doesn't. A much shorter sight radius doesn't help either, but that's why you use an optic.
Velocity doesn't drop as much as you think, either. Shotguns are basically just big pistols, and as such gain very little velocity after 12" or so of barrel (to the point where 18.5" and 30" get about the same from the cartridge). 18"-18.5" just sticks around because it's the US legal limit (and the Canadian one, when semi-auto), not because it's actually ideal.
.357 Magnum, .30 Carbine, and to a point .300 Blackout share the same performance to barrel length relationship- they start to really drop off once you go down to 6" or shorter, benefit up to about 12", with marginal gain after that.

From what I've seen it's more that the effect is only pronounced when you use slugs or buckshot. A few youtubers have documented their own tests, and the results are pretty similar.
This guy did the most extensive testing, and found that for buckshot an 11" barrel has ~75% as much energy as an 18" barrel, ~90% for birdshot, and ~70% for slugs.

For a second I totally thought those were real geese and was wondering why the hell they were all hanging around you. Those are some pretty realistic decoys.
Cool set-up by the way. Looks like it'd have some pretty wild muzzle blast. I love SBS. The last great things about Canadian guns laws are SBS, and being able to ship guns and ammo to our door instead of as an FFL

The other guys I hunt with dont like the blast noise. Its quite strong. Its the only drawback I have found.

u/Joeyjackhammer Mar 27 '26
What province allows dark goose hunting right now? Snows and Ross’, sure. But Canadas?

u/FrankDodger Mar 27 '26
Photo from last fall, and yea canada geese have been huntable every fall since forever. Bags sometimes change as the years go by, back in Ontario years ago it was 5 daily, I think last fall in alberta it was 8 per day

I’ve used my SS-211 at the clay range and it worked quite well. About as consistent as my actual goose gun. I’ve never taken it to the field, but maybe one day.
