News / Politics / Activism Play by the rules and still lose - let's change that
So — I’ve been feeling pretty patriotic lately, and also pretty pissed off.
I’m just a regular guy. I work full time, take care of my family, and I’ve always followed the rules. Got licensed, did everything the right way, stayed on the right side of the law.
Now I’m sure a lot of you have seen the emails from the RCMP too. There’s a deadline coming up on October 30th, and after that, if you own one of the guns on their list and don’t comply, you’re going to get treated like a criminal for owning something you legally bought and were allowed to have.
That doesn’t sit right with me at all.
We the people who’ve done everything right are the ones being targeted, while the actual problems aren’t being dealt with. We get lumped in with things we have nothing to do with, and somehow we’re the ones paying for it.
I’m not here to argue with anyone — I just needed to say it. This whole situation is wrong, and it’s getting harder to just stay quiet about it.
I know a lot of people are frustrated but brushing it off or staying quiet thinking everything will get better. At some point that stops being an option.
we need something like the freedom convoy but twice as big. this is a massive issue that we can't be passive and dismissive about, I'm not talking about violence but grow a spine and stand up for our God given rights.
I'm not even sure about how to grow the momentum needed for something like that which brings me to why I'm here, I want your help, ideas, and support. together I know we can make a change, and where better to start then here.

u/xpingux Mar 25 '26
Buddy, you're using emdashes.
71
u/texasbarkintrilobite Mar 25 '26
Right? OP is feeling so pissed off, but obviously not pissed off enough to write their own argument or grievances. Letting a computer do the arguing for you isn't a winning plan. Get off of AI and write what you feel.
9
u/Velocity-5348 Mar 26 '26
I know someone who's been using them for decades and feel really sorry for them.
(Not here though, this is clearly AI).
6
u/AntiNakedman Mar 26 '26
Ugh, I just learned (from the rabbit hole your comment sent me down) that emdashes are an AI thing. I’ve been using them in my writing for 20 years and now I need to change or people will think I am a bot.
3
u/TescoValueSoup Mar 26 '26
Training datasets included vast amounts of old fiction and newsmedia when the emdash was more widely used.
2
u/stealthy_1 Mar 26 '26
Same! I’ve been using them since high school essays were still hand-written by students back in high school in early 2000s. Yes I’m younger by many standards but still.
It’s actually annoying now that using certain proper punctuation is only AI because the majority of people these days can’t be bothered to use proper grammar online, myself included.
2
u/xpingux Mar 26 '26
You can use regular dashes FYI. The slightly longer ones are the ones the clankers use.
1
u/YYCWood Apr 01 '26
I also use EM dashes. I was taught to use them in the late 90s and early 2000s as well. Alt 0151.

u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
You're correct. I got some help writing it because I'm not super articulate, doesn't change how I feel it's just put it better words.
1
u/SufficientProof40 Mar 29 '26
But it does change things and it is REALLY hurting your argument, post the way you write naturally, no one here is going to judge you for it too harshly and it will likely be better received. This is obviously written by an AI and most chronically online Reddit people recognize the writing style and tune out almost immediately.

u/fawk_bitches Mar 25 '26
They can make us all a criminal. But they dont have the support, means, or the capital to lock us all up and enforce this.
I won't be participating.
Sure like this is crumbling. Gary is getting pushed off his stage by the unhinged finger pointer. She's so tunnel focused it's scary.

I'M NOT A GOPHER OR A GROUNDHOG 🤡🤡🤡
What a lunatic, and the guns you're banning aren't assault weapons and the owners aren't criminals.

u/stickupmybutter Mar 25 '26
I haven't seen this... Any YouTube clip on it?
16
u/Lumindan Mar 25 '26
Ccfr has the whole press conference. It's like 16 minutes
6
u/rYrYCN114 Mar 25 '26
And a painful 16 minutes packed with lies it was!
We need to dispel the gun lobby lies, sign up and get your money blah, blah, blah. What money?!
Emotionally compromised fanatic and Carney goes and gets her to run for office, shameful but typical.

It's not so funny when she is the real Public Safety minister steering government policy

Honestly lol I haven't taken this seriously at any point since it's inception. Deleted every email I've gotten etc.
This is a clown show and ought to be treated as such
7
u/EQ1_Deladar Mar 25 '26
Problem is they don't have to arrest or charge everyone.
They'll make a few arrests, ensure the trials are fast tracked and heavily covered in the media. The trial will 100% result in a guilty verdicts as there is literally no arguable legal defense. Then they'll ensure the judges apply the maximum sentences and again get that heavily covered in media. "Potentially Violent Gun Nut Jailed for 30 Years!"
After that, they'll just start making a few more arrests here and there but for these ones they'll start offering plea bargains that are conditional on you not fighting the criminal confiscation/destruction of your entire collection (not just your prohibs), losing your ability to get a PAL, and having a criminal record for life...
Once the public sees a few poor slubs having their lives absolutely ruined and getting a few decades or more in a federal max prison, the rest will cave pretty fast.
At that point, they'll offer a "one time amnesty" to owners who bring in their firearms before X date to save the hassles of arrests, pleas, trials... and people will be lined up for blocks to participate.
3
u/jollygreengiant1655 Mar 25 '26
Once again law abiding citizens get the shaft, while repeat violent offenders hardly even see the inside of a jail cell.
2
u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 26 '26
guess we're going to see a bunch of law abiding citizens become violent offenders pretty quick
3
u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 25 '26
you think people aren't going to snap and go postal if that's the outcome?
1
u/EQ1_Deladar Mar 26 '26
The absolute last thing legal firearms owners need is to provide an actually valid example for the Liberals to parade around as reasons to limit firearms ownership even more.
2
u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 26 '26
Because complying has worked so well
1
u/YYCWood Apr 01 '26
To be fair, the conservatives didn’t really do much to help when they were in office… they didn’t pass laws to allow suppressors, they didn’t make ARs NR, they didn’t enshrine firearms as a right…
It’s a slow burn, and the liberals are trying to speed it up. And to be fair, MB is right there with AB in calling the prohibs and buyback a farce. And they’re the NDP that so many like to call the communists.
12
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
I get what you're saying, but they haven't had support from the beginning and even if they can't lock us up or physically enforce it, all it would take is something as simple as restricting you from renewing your driver's license because you're in possession of a prohibited weapon for example.
16
u/fawk_bitches Mar 25 '26
The big Q...How would they know what I have? I haven't declared fuck all.

Oh they can. Not difficult. But as far as they know it could be all smoke too.
12
u/MapleBaconBeer Mar 25 '26
That's not how that works. Drivers licenses are provincial, firearms laws are federal. If anything, they could prevent you from renewing you PAL rendering all your guns in your possession illegal.
5
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
My bad, you're right. Was just a top of the head example. Although they had no right to freeze bank accounts during the freedom convoy so who knows what the hell they would be willing to do.
1
u/Eisenbahn-de-order Mar 25 '26
within the frame of the law. idk how much respect they have for it but they still have to at least pretend not to get into extralegal territory
2
u/boozefiend3000 Mar 25 '26
I’m kinda interested in the revoking PAL thing. Wouldn’t that just put them back to square one? If your PAL is revoked the police have to come and get your guns. Police gonna have the time and manpower to actually have to go to everyone’s doors now?
2
u/burgers1919 Mar 26 '26
but they can freeze all our bank accounts? does no one see that coming or think it likely - they have done it b4 without consequence - why wouldn;t they do it again?
7
u/baedriaan Mar 25 '26
They literally froze bank accounts and everyone tucked their tails and went home.
69
u/KorporalKarnage Mar 25 '26
We already tried this.
It was called FED UP in 1998. I couldn't make it due to work but many bussed and flew in. Media ignored what was at the time one of the biggest protests in Canadian history against Bill C68. End result? Bill passed and we all got used to the onerous conditions of the Firearms Act. Most even like the licencing requirements.
Protesting anything the Liberals do is like pissing into the wind. Best thing to do is sweet f all. Don't comply. Make them come to you... ALL of you. They can't prosecute 3 million Canadians. We aren't at Soviet levels of police state yet.
Liberals love passing laws but are really shitty at implementing them.
9
u/Shatter4468 Mar 25 '26
I frankly don't care. They will be absolutely unable to enforce this. Even my home city PD have said they aren't participating in the buy back program.
Passive protests are already going on everywhere. It's just a matter of waiting. The program will fail. Carney knows it will fail. That's why it's so half assed.
He just needs to look like he just needs to do a few things to keep the liberal party happy.
54
Mar 25 '26
the media would demonize us anyway, and if the CCFR cant get this shit going what hope do we have?
1
u/Top_Top7440 Mar 25 '26
I dunno, the Quebec city turnout was pretty good. And I was in Ottawa some years ago and a ton of people turned out.
Only problem is that CBC only wants to talk about the bad orange man and nothing about what Canadians want. I think the OP"s frustration is with never being heard and I would agree. If you have a better idea then bring it...
-58
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
Well just look what happened at the freedom convoy the media demonized us there, but it was the self-reporters that showed the other side of the story and that opened a lot of people's eyes, I've talked to quite a few people who've admitted they were brainwashed by the media and the convoy made them realize that.
Also we can't just rely on the ccfr to do all the work, we the people have to organize and plan something logically which is why I made my post. one man might not make a a difference, but together a lot of shit can happen.
55
u/zeeloniusfunk Mar 25 '26
I think the issue with the freedom convoy in my city was it just frigged with traffic for the day and it came across as obnoxious. I worked downtown that day and didn’t see a single participant trying to eloquently express the goals of their movement.
If we do the same with the buyback, measures need to be taken to prevent the media from besmirching the cause by doing it right, keeping it chill and trying to inform the public
3
u/mywaaaaife Mar 25 '26
You know what’s obnoxious? Blatant corruption and government overreach.
What the freedom convoy stood for was noble and they were demonized by state media. The organizers are facing prison sentences longer than child diddlers. Bank accounts frozen - all deemed illegal by the courts and yet nothing will happen.
So while this protest may have been inconvenient for those who live in the area I can guarantee that the socioeconomic impacts, that are still felt today, are more than a minor inconvenience.
-4
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
Yeah we wouldn't want a copy paste freedom convoy 2.0, it would definitely need to have a different tone to it, but I think the biggest challenge would be to get everyone on the same page regarding the logistics, intentions, and outcome.
-32
u/Velosity79 Mar 25 '26
That’s the problem with Canadians. You think this government tyranny (then Covid lockdowns, now gun confiscation, next…) will change anything by being eLoQuEnT?! It’s puss*es like this why we are screwed as a country. The freedom convoy was exactly what was needed then, and I agree with OP, double what we need now.
11
u/goinupthegranby Mar 25 '26
So no clear stated goals, and being hostile and disruptive to other Canadians?
3
u/Reasonable_Camel8784 Mar 25 '26
I mean a protest is by it's nature, disruptive. I didn't agree with a lot of what the convoy people were demanding but in the end it was a protest and the government did overreach.
The state wants you to believe that the only acceptable way to protest is in a way that bothers no one and causes minimal disruption because in the end those are the easiest to shrug off. Why do you think some provinces have passed bills making it illegal to block "vital infastructure" while keeping that term vague?
6
u/goinupthegranby Mar 25 '26
Yea I've been to many protests and yes they're supposed to be disruptive. They're also supposed to have a clear message.
Take a look at Fairy Creek. A very clear stated goal of 'don't cut down this old growth forest', which was responded to with the biggest mass arrests in Canadian history since the internment camps, something the media largely ignored. 1,188 arrests at Fairy Creek, compared to 272 during the convoy but the media ran 100 times more stories about the convoy than about Fairy Creek, which happened at almost the same time. The other two biggest mass arrests were the Toronto G20 summit and another of growth logging protest in the 90s.
2
u/Reasonable_Camel8784 Mar 25 '26
Ah, I just thought you were saying part of the issue was it was disruptive. My mistake.
I agree with you, a clear message is crucial and Fairy Creek should've seen so much more coverage. I honestly can't remember all that much being in the news cycle, even the Wet'suwet'en land defenders only really had a video or two get public attention.
-1
u/goinupthegranby Mar 25 '26
Dude the media is right wing as hell, that's why they don't cover environmental protests but gave the convoy all the coverage in the world.
As a result there are millions of Canadians who now believe that the eventual breaking up of the convoy protests was the biggest incident of the goverment suppressing a protest in history even though it wasn't even close and the actual biggest crackdown had happened literally a few months earlier in BC.
6
u/FiestaLimon Mar 25 '26
Please explain how the freedom convoy was exactly what we needed. It achieved nothing other than pissing off a large portion (the vast majority, if we're honest) of the populace.
3
u/Velosity79 Mar 25 '26
While the clapping seal "populace" were in their habitual slumber, the freedom convoy scared this government to its core. It went so far as ILLEGALLY declaring the emergency act, unconstitutional freezing of bank accounts…and subsequently ceasing all illegal covid mandates.
THIS was what 4+ million fed up Canadians were able to accomplish!
People like you can just keep your elbows up your a** and don’t forget your boosters.
1
u/madblackhater Mar 26 '26
Ya, we don't need the fake victim fetish thanks. You guys already did enough pushing people to the Libs with your national crying event. Let's skip past the part where you guys make it worse for everyone, then fold like wet spaghetti, abandoning everything you claimed to stand for the second you faced any opposition. We already know the convoy was a complete joke of a moment. Instead we should be focusing on gaining real public support, then maybe something will actually be accomplished this time.
Stop trying to sound like a hardcore freedom fighting bad ass repeating facebook memes, we've already seen how easily you guys will tuck tail and run.
1
u/FiestaLimon Mar 25 '26
"Scared the government", ok.
Governments world wide were easing restrictions at that time, due to reductions in cases, and case severity, thanks in no small part, to said restrictions and vaccinations. I'm going to protest the sun, and pat myself on the back at about 830 tonight
0
u/goodfleance Mar 25 '26
The freedom convoy was exactly what was needed
Really? We needed bouncy castles and obnoxious cunts keeping Canadians awake all night? What did it accomplish? Did you get any meaningful results besides turning more of the country against you?
Like, fuck this government but also fuck that convoy. It was an aimless airing of grievances that accomplished nothing. We should not look to that event for inspiration, we should do better.

u/Blargston1947 Mar 25 '26
I saw quite a few being interviewed, and it was quite well articulated as to why they were there. Usually because their livelihood(which is a charter right) was striped from them for zero scientific reasoning - as per what was uncovered during the discovery phase of the travel ban lawsuit that the judicial system declared to be "moot", Why? because the government declared it would stop abusing our rights and freedoms in a few months from oct 2023. Moot is defined as being "a waste of judicial resources to adjudicate on" or "no value to society"
"December of 2021, Shaun Rickard and Karl Harrison filed an application in the Federal Court to challenge the restrictions imposed by Trudeau. Inspired by Shaun and Karl, three other similar applications were filed subsequently by the Hon. Brian Peckford (and others), the Hon. Maxime Bernier and a courageous young Quebec attorney, Nabil Ben Naoum. All four cases would be managed by Shaun and Karl’s young and brilliant lawyer, Sam Presvelos.
Over the next 6 months—including 6 weeks of cross-examination of as many as 25 witnesses—there were around 15,000 pages of evidence assembled, which showed that the Prime Minister had lied to the Canadian people about his so-called “health measures,” which had, in fact, been imposed only to create a ”wedge issue” and to aid his general election campaign in the Summer and Fall of 2021.
Faced with the reality of the overwhelming evidence, three of Trudeau’s ministers held a press conference on June 14th, 2022, to announce that his travel mandate would be suspended. Immediately afterwards, Trudeau’s lawyers filed a motion to strike the legal proceedings on the basis that they were deemed moot."
Look at that last paragraph. That the government knew they would lose the lawsuit because the discovery phase showed gross negligence at best, and full on abuse of our charter, they then declared the issue moot - "But your honor, I told the defendant I would stop raping her next week, the issue is CLEARLY moot!"
4
u/PrairieBiologist Mar 25 '26
It was garbage. They didn’t know what they wanted. They just wanted to complain. Not one of their goals was realistic. Now they’re the biggest reason everyone united against the conservatives in the last election.
15
u/frenglish_man Mar 25 '26
Let’s not assume that the pro-gun folk in here were also pro-freedom convoy. 2 separate issues. Just because I think the govt overstepped when declaring the state of emergency, it doesn’t mean I stand with the truckers.

u/PrairieBiologist Mar 25 '26
The freedom convoy was an absolute joke. If that’s your reference for this then we are screwed.

3
u/Kawawaymog Mar 26 '26
Right? Last thing we need to have people associate legal gun owners with those nut jobs. What we need is education. I live in a very liberal area and 90% of the people I talk to are pro more gun control until they learn that the current gun control measures exceed what they think we should be working towards.

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 25 '26
Let’s wait for the SCC to make a decision.
If that also fails, then we need to up the ante, collectively.
11
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
I agree, but I think we should also be proactive instead of reactive.
1
u/FuzzyLampShade Mar 25 '26
How long could that be? I’m worried with how long courts typically take the amnesty would have expired.
3
u/Plasma_48 Mar 25 '26
Unless they are unusually fast, it’ll probably after the amnesty. I’m sure that someone is going to request that the amnesty be extended while the case is going on, which may be granted.
3
u/CringelordCameron Mar 25 '26
The amnesty will be extended, there is no possibility of it ending with an active supreme court case. If the government doesn't willingly extend it, it will certainly be enjoined by the court.

u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
My apologies, as I said to someone else, I'm not super articulate and I wanted to grab as much attention as I could, doesn't change how I feel I Just wanted it put in better words.
13
u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 25 '26
I hate to break it to you and I hate to black pill but...
That won't change, nothing is going to change, the largest signed epetitions in the HOC are all firearm related but have all been ignored and the SCC will side with the feds to keep the bans in place. One can talk about their frustrations, many do, I'm frustrated, every non boomer-fudd gun owner I know is frustrated, but the country is too apathetic. Theres always talks of "oh we need to protest" or "we need to enact real change" but when the moment of proof comes, nothing happens. We can vote for a change but that's barely a suggestion as even if we vote for the CPC the MP's can just switch teams for no reason without a by-election. We work for our government and that's how it's going to be
That is something no one wants to hear but until I'm proven otherwise it stands as the current truth of the matter
1
u/Defiant-Bass9034 Mar 25 '26
I get how you feel, but I'm clinging to hope for now. In my mind, there's no logical consistency with how they've gone about these bans and reclassifications, or what they've said vs what they've done. And statistically speaking there's no evidence to support their claims that law abiding gun owners are the problem. On top of that they've used lots of disengenuous politically charged language to try and manipulate people unfamiliar with gun laws and gun issues. And yet there are plenty of people who are not gun owners and do not care much about guns, that have also been saying this is a waste of time and money. And now the supreme Court has decided to hear our side out. It would be a waste of time to simply reaffirm what the government and lower courts have already said, unless they just want to use these cases to set a precedent on how the law is interpreted. I would think the court of appeals decision would have been enough for that, but IANAL. In any case, they accepted the application to hear the cases so there could be something they take issue with. There's still time and there's still hope 🤞

u/jollygreengiant1655 Mar 25 '26
Nothing so thoroughly encapsulates the current timidity of western nations as this "it is what it is and there's no point in fixing it" mentality. People have forgotten what it means to have a spine and actually stand up for something.

I used to be very patriotic about Canada but holy crap has that completely dissipated. I cannot stand this country anymore. We’re run by ideological morons that don’t believe in democracy.

I honestly don’t know what’s left to love about this country anymore.

That's literally my sentiment too, hence why I signed the separation petition going through my province. I like the west here but theres a clear and definitive divide as well as a lack of care from Ottawa and the east. And when a country can vote one way but then an MP can just chamge teams without a by-election it just shows you how much of a joke the system is, our votes aren't definitive, they're merely a suggestion

5
u/Joebranflakes Mar 25 '26
The problem with living in a representative democracy is that when your voice is the minority, which it is, you are at the mercy of the majority. There really isn't any way around this, and if the places were reversed you wouldn't want the minority to rule. Unfortunately, the general public, as a majority doesn't care about this, or are actively hostile towards gun owners. Our knee jerk reaction is to blame the politicians, but they aren't really to blame here. They have to cover their own political arses. What we need is better public outreach to show the general public that gun ownership isn't as dangerous as the anti-gun crowd seem to think. We need the public on our side first, then the politicians will follow naturally.
2
1
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
That's a very valid point and makes alot of sense, The big question is how would we go about that?
0
u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 25 '26
the minority already does rule. tons of concessions, free passes, etc get given out to minorities of all types in canada when most don't want that. the anti gun lobby are a minority, yet their voice gets heard almost entirely vs the gun lobby.
3
3
u/arcticrune Mar 25 '26
Ok. A couple of things, first off the American made AI you used to write this filled it with em dashes and "we the people" references to the American constitution. I get that you're down on yourself about your writing capability but if you are a real person with real opinions, say them as best you can with your own voice cause right now you look like a fuckin CIA psyop.
Second, your right to own a gun was not given by God it was given by democratic consensus of the Canadian people, and that democratic consensus can and will take that right away, you'd do well to remember that. Of course I agree that the firearms restrictions on Canada have become performative and pointless, but the solution to that is within the democratic structures of our country. Now you haven't SAID you want to do more than protest, but if you go around acting like you have a divine right to a gun and not the democratic privilege you're gonna end up stumbling into the idea that you have the divine right to defend your firearms, which is the exact ideology that has cooked the US for the last 20 years. That's the exact ideology that gives them a gun violence rate that is disproportionate to even the large amount of guns they have.
Third, I lived and worked in Ottawa during the convoy (and still do now), we don't need bigger fucking convoy. It was miserable and fucked the cities economy. I know everyone is a different person but I had to serve a number of convoy participants as they entered the city and my god were they some of the most selfish dickheads I've ever met.
Now, please specify what you mean when you title this "play by the rules and lose". Because I haven't seen any large scale protests about the gun laws in Ottawa recently. And protesting is absolutely within the rules. The convoy, if done legally would be as well. So to be absolutely clear. You are NOT intending to subvert the democratic prosesses that have attempted to take away your firearms with violence. Right Mr. "We the people"?

I like what you’re saying it’s very clear and concise. Only correction I would make is referring to gun ownership as a right given by democratic consensus. Gun ownership has never been a right of any type in Canada, it’s always been a privilege.

u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
Alright, Just to clarify when I "said we the people" I wasn't referencing the US I meant regular Canadians who follow the rules and feel like they're not being heard.
Also, Yes, we may have the "privilege" of owning guns but I believe we have the right to defend ourselves whether the government wants to prosecute us for that or not, hard to come to terms that they want to take away a tool from us that they themselves rely on for protection. I also believe that we have a moral right to defend something we own.
I hear what you're saying about the convoy, And I get why it left a bad impression for a lot of people, especially if you were living or working in Ottawa during it. like I said to someone else, if there were some kind of protest we wouldn't want a copy paste, It would need to be done differently and like I said in my original post I'm not talking about violence but to just stand up for ourselves.
Someone else made a good point about changing the People's minds in order to change the governments mind and I'm not sure if a protest would do that, because look at someone like yourself, the freedom convoy put a bad taste in your mouth and that's not what we want, and that's why I made this post I wanted a discussion and ideas and to vent a little.

u/arcticrune Mar 26 '26
If you're looking to change people's minds you need to change their minds about guns in the first place. I grew up where hunting was common so I'm used to them and see them as tools. Liberal governments have been able to haphazardly and unscientifically ban guns because most Canadians have serious negative feelings about them.
It's obvious where those feelings come from, America has created a culture where it's moral and good to kill someone over property. Many Americans are taught from a young age that the primary use of guns is as a tool to kill other humans, and this mentality and the culture developed as a result create teens and adults who, when they feel like they lack control over their lives, see guns as a tool to take control back. Having gone over the data from western nations about gun ownership and gun violence it's clear to me now that the only gun violence statistic where "More Guns" = "More Gun Deaths" in a linear fashion is suicides. If you have a gun, you're more likely to kill yourself with it. For every other country on earth their per capita gun ownership and gun violence rates are generally related, but to wildly varying degrees. Essentially you can have a lot of guns in your country but have relatively low gun violence rates comparatively with good laws and a healthy enough culture. (See Switzerland and tbh us).
America on the other hand has like 1.25 guns per person or some crazy shit and STILL has a disproportionately high rate of gun violence for even THAT number. And we see all that shit, everyone does around the world. They export their fucked up news everywhere. I'd hazard a guess that if we hadn't been getting American news a number of the school shootings we've had in the last 15 years would not have happened, that culture influences people and it makes Canadians scared of guns the way Americans probably should be.
So the message you need to put out needs to be an explicitly Canadian one. Much of our culture is based on rejection of American culture. Some people criticize that, and when we go along with their bullshit that's fair, but I think it's actually a strength when used properly. Focus on hunting as a way of life, focus on target shooting and other firearm related sports, loudly and vocally support gun laws related to safe storage and transportation of firearms, offer criticism to those laws in a way that shows you want them to be as effective at their stated goal as possible, be loudly supportive of laws that require gun owners to prove they know how to responsibly operate and store their guns.
This may be difficult for some people but attempt to couch your support of gun ownership in liberalism. Not the Poli-Sci academic paper liberalism but literally the liberalism as in the ideology of the Liberal Party of Canada. We live in a social democratic state, our Conservative Party is left of the American Democratic Party. Recently PP has taken the conservatives in a direction that is very American and focuses on culture war issues and trans people and whatnot and look at how well that's worked for him so far. He's getting cooked and he's bleeding MPs left and right, mostly left. Going the way America has with messaging is gonna drive people further away, so DON'T TALK ABOUT DEFENDING YOUR HOME, PROPERTY, OR PERSON WITH FIREARMS EVER. Not only is that scary to non gun owning Canadians and city dwellers, it's illegal. Please explain to people who think it's silly that it's in fact not, and that if you are storing your firearms properly, using them to defend your home should not be feasible due to the amount of time it should take for you to retrieve them. Time not spent taking other courses of action to flee, or call the police. A judge will likely consider you having planned in advance to have access to a firearm in the event of a break in as you having planned to murder someone when the opportunity arises.
So if the question is brought up by a person who may normally be afraid of guns and doesn't have a lot of exposure to them, the answer is "no absolutely not, they are not for home defence. They are hobbyist equipment and hunting tools." And if you take this stance against Canadian gun owners who feel oppositely and want the ability to kill intruders with their guns you will at the very least demonstrate to non gun owners that there are reasonable safety minded gun owners whom they can trust.
Finally to finish with how to be a capital L Liberal gun owner and not scare the hoes. Talk about where most of the guns used in crimes come from. America illegally, thefts in Canada. And show willingness to create gun control laws that focus on those issues. Explain that the Liberal party keeps making specific guns illegal when it's already illegal to shoot a person and the guns being used to shoot people were smuggled from the states. That you're absolutely in favour of laws that will prevent the smuggling of firearms and requirements for guns to be stored in a way to reduce their theft, but the government is instead targeting legal gun owners and pretending like that's solving the gun violence issues present in certain communities. And finally please mention the actual statistics regarding crime in Canada. The two least likely groups to commit a crime in this country are illegal immigrants and legal gun owners. Make your gun club woke or something idk. Just make it clear gun owners are a group that exists in Canada, that it's actually a relatively large group and the reason they're never heard about, is that they never do anything worth hearing about. Gun owners are just normal people.
Idk what to say about your defending yourself thing though. Like 99% of break ins aren't gonna justify a gun especially in this country, and if you do go for the gun, declaring your intention to kill someone with a gun on Reddit means that even if this hypothetical burglar had barred you back door, cut your phone lines stole your cellphone and then came at you with a gun after loudly announcing his intention to kill you you're probably cooked in court 'cause you've declared your intention to kill that guy regardless of what he does, right in this thread. Or at least implied it. You can't make the argument you had no other choice cause this thread now suggests you had planned for this eventuality and settled on murder as soon as the opportunity presents itself "whether the government wants to prosecute [you] for that or not". If you're really that concerned about your safety and belongings sell your gun and get a really robust security system. There's an entire armed force in this country your tax dollars pay to protect your stuff. Yeah they are kinda shit at getting it back but if you have a good security system they can absolutely show up before it's taken. And if the guy does have a gun, they will absolutely shoot him for you. Hell they'll shoot him if he has a knife or a knife shaped stick, there's no way the court would let you get away with that.
Edit: sorry about the tone in the original post, genuinely so used to dealing with the most aggressive insane Americans on the internet I judged you way too soon. It's clear you are a very very normal person and that we don't have to agree on everything to not be dicks.
1
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 26 '26
I appreciate you taking the time to write all that out and I do agree with a lot of what you're saying.
You're right that messaging matters, especially in Canada. Most people here don't grow up around firearms so their perception is shaped by headlines and what they see happening in the US. I get why certain language or framing can turn people off right away. And I agree that leaning into American style arguments probably doesn't help.
I also agree that focusing on responsible ownership, hunting, sport shooting, safe storage is the most accurate reflection of what firearm ownership looks like here in Canada.
Where I think we differ is that messaging alone Isn't the whole picture. perception matters but policy shouldn't be driven purely by perception either. there's a difference between what people feel and what actually addresses the problem and I think that distinction is important.
My frustration comes from the fact that all us legal gun owners did exactly what they were supposed to do. They got licensed, Followed the laws, stored everything properly, and now we're the ones being affected the most. That's what I meant by "play by the rules still lose" Not that rules shouldn't exist but they're compliance doesn't seem to carry much weight in the outcome.
On the self-defense side, I understand why it's a sensitive topic in Canada and why people are hesitant to even go there, but at the same time I don't think it makes sense to treat it like it can't be discussed at all. People take reasonable steps to protect themselves and other areas of life. Not because they expect the worst. But because they understand that response times and real world situations aren't always perfect. I think there's room for balanced conversation without it turning into something extreme. There's a saying I've heard before that basically says If we shouldn't use a gun to protect ourselves/family and we should just call the police then should we get rid of fire extinguishers and when a fire breaks out just call the fire department? It's a last ditch effort in a very bad scenario, I don't think anyone's hoping someone breaks in so they can murder them and if they are well then they're not right in the head.
I'm not trying to push anything outside the law and I agree that certain messaging can backfire, but I also don't think the conversation should be limited to only what feels comfortable to people who already have a negative perception. There has to be space to question whether policies are actually targeting the right issues.
And on working within the system, that's exactly what people did. That's where a lot of this frustration Is coming from, It's not about rejecting the system, It's about feeling like participation in it isn't being reflected fairly in the outcomes.
I think we probably agree more than we disagree especially on keeping things reasonable and grounded in Canadian context, I'm just trying to point out there's a growing disconnect between people who are following the rules and the way those same people are being impacted and that's what doesn't sit right with me.
1
u/arcticrune Mar 27 '26
I hear you about the policy being driven by actual solutions. But unfortunately societal perception is what drives policy. Making laws that randomly punish legal gun owners is seen as somewhere between a responsible act and benign to most people because they don't get how little of a threat legal gun owners are and how little good this wack-a-mole style lawmaking does. Like with many issues in politics where a minority groups needs aren't being addressed by the majority, it's due to a lack of familiarity or a misunderstanding about why that groups needs are serious.
Unfortunately the Liberal Party isn't negatively impacted by repeatedly shoving through pointless gun control bills under the guise of public safety. And realistically the Conservative Party probably won't undo the unnecessary restrictions the Liberals put in place because it's a bad look. It makes them look American, and that's a bad political look in this country. Maybe they would have stopped the buyback in progress if they'd gotten in fast enough, but it's unlikely they'd reverse anything significant. That leaves educating the public as the only real step to getting policy changed. And you don't have to make people realize the difference between gun owners in Canada and the US, just making clear the pointlessness of the laws theyre implementing and offering a better alternative can educate people and potentially stop new shitty laws from being made. That's a foothold for walking back some of the more agreagious restrictions at least.
To bounce back over to the home defence thing. The issue is this. We know that in general, loosening the laws on when you are allowed to use lethal force against another human is going to create a cultural shift in how people perceive killing. This is a driving factor behind American gun violence. Additionally, to use your fire extinguisher metaphor, the fire in my house isn't gonna bring gasoline with it if it thinks I might have bought a fire extinguisher. Another part of that cultural shift will be the arms race that creates in communities. You'd hope it'd at least be a deterrent, but there's plenty of examples of the death penalty and mandatory minimums not really deterring anything. America has the death penalty on many states and still has like, triple our murder rate. It makes sense on paper being killed would deter a right minded individual from doing something, but that ignores the mental state people who do these crimes are usually in.
Now there's still the tradeoff, the personal safety that you get from being allowed to defend your home with a firearm. But realistically the tradeoff societally isn't really all that great cause you aren't gonna be murdered, let alone in your own home. There were 788 homicides in 2024 in Canada. That's 1.91 per 100 000 people. A majority of those 788 were women, and 42% of those women were killed by their spouse. So right away we're looking at a number that's cut way down from even the 1.91. That 788 still includes things like hate crimes, gang violence, any major shootings that occurred that year, and any instance of two drunk dudes in a fistfight outside a bar that ended in a tragic death when one hits his head on the curb, as well as vehicular homicides.
Speaking of cars for comparison the number car accident deaths in 2023 in Canada was 4.9 per 100 000. Compared to our 1.9 for all homicides period. So yeah, it can happen. But realistically it's not worth planning for because you're way more likely to murdered not in your own home (unless you're a woman) and by a person who is not entering your home looking to do you harm. And even still far more likely to die in a car accident.

"the word "liberal" is derived from the same Latin root as liberty and liberation—liber, which means "free". It originated from the Latin liberalis, referring to a "free-born man" and the "liberal arts". Originally meaning "generous or tolerant", it evolved to represent a political philosophy focused on individual rights and freedom from excessive control." -google ai/Miriam Webster
What I've learned as someone whos a leftist is to never stay loyal to your party; stay loyal to your beliefs.
As the great philosopher Aristotle once said:
"We need to take every politician out back."

Canada is probably the greatest G7 country when it comes to ruining their reputation through the suppression of public opinion. I am still appalled at the Emergencies Act / Freedom Convoy and how the government handled it. But then again, our country voted in the same party again as if nothing happened. Who is there to blame

Yeah this is outrageous and has been since time on. There is no reason for us not to be able to own the firearms we want… pistols need to be back and we need sensible gun laws. There is no reason for us not to have all semi autos be legal. What is the difference between these guns and why aren’t we allowed to own them we have demonstrated that we are responsible. More people die in high speed accidents over pal gun owners dangerous gun crime 1000x are you gonna put governors on every car so we can’t go over 100? It’s not even just about that we as citizens need a vetted armed populace for the government and for the country. Not saying we need to take arms against the country but it has to be a power the people have incase the government became totalitarian or are sovereignty was threatened. Suppressors are just common sense… we are so far behind we really just don’t advocate for ourselves at all. Everyone is too scared and thinks nothing will come of it. But they are the government that serves the populace and it seems right now they aren’t. A lot of people are indifferent to this and more people are anti gun grab than pro so it’s definitely an issue that the SC should address properly if we make a big enough fuss. grandfather is straight up loss and not at all something we can let happen. There’s a lot more of us than we think.

they were able to do it under the emergencies act. without it the govt has no ways of doing it, a judge might be able to issue injunctions but to 3 mil people?
5
u/Primary_Judge Mar 25 '26
They used the Emergency Act to freeze bank accounts, the Courts found that illegal.

So everyone who had their assets frozen and their lives destroyed 5 years ago now have everything rightfully restored to them and those who committed this illegal act are now prosecuted right? Right??

The reality is that we can complain as much as they want but they passed a law legally and it doesn’t violate any rights we are actually guaranteed by the charter. They’re not doing anything illegal. We are getting screwed by democracy, not at all totalitarianism.
3
u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 25 '26
they passed a law legally
The OIC bans are not legal. As per the criminal code OIC cannot be used to ban firearms that are "reasonable for hunting or sporting purposes;" the Indigenous and subsistence hunting carve-outs in the amnesty order are a clear admission that the government does believe that at some of the firearms on the lists are indeed reasonable for hunting, which makes the OIC bans illegal.
1
u/PrairieBiologist Mar 25 '26
They aren’t illegal. They have been ruled on in court already. You can disagree with the ruling, but the court decides what is and isn’t legal.
4
u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 25 '26
A judge ruling that the government can do it regardless of the law does not change the objective reality that the OICs are contrary to the stipulations in the Criminal Code. Just as with the original ruling on the use of the Emergencies Act, the act clearly states that the government must use the CSIS definition of threat to national security, the judge incorrectly agreed with the government's argument of "We decided to use a different definition." That incorrect ruling has since been overturned, because, again, a judge making an incorrect ruling that the government doesn't have to follow the law doesn't magically mean the law wasn't broken.
1
u/PrairieBiologist Mar 25 '26
The incorrect ruling was overturned because it was illegal. It has only been deemed illegal because of the court overturning the original ruling. That hasn’t happened for the gun ban. It has consistently held up in court. We do not have a charter right to property in Canada. No rights are being violated. C21 included several elements needed for the confiscation program. Whether you like it or not, this is legal and will remain legal until a court overturns it which won’t happen. The indigenous car outs don’t prove anything. Indigenous people are effectively a different class of citizens with rights that we don’t have.
1
u/Foreign_Active_7991 Mar 25 '26
The government could get a judge to rule that the sky is green, that wouldn't make it true. And my comment was not about C21 or property rights, it was pointing out the objective reality that the OIC bans violate the Criminal Code; a moronic judge saying "They can do it anyways" does not change the fact that, as the law is witten, the OICs are in violation.
The indigenous car outs don’t prove anything. Indigenous people are effectively a different class of citizens with rights that we don’t have.
A) The carve-outs also include subsistence hunters B) They show the government acknowledging that they have banned firearms that are reasonable for hunting via OIC, which, as per the Criminal Code, they aren't allowed to do. If the firearms in question had been banned via legislation then it would be legal, it's the banning via OIC that is contrary to law.

There is no veil of democracy. It is democracy. The liberals won despite everyone knowing their position on firearms. Best electoral performance in decades. Zero rights are being violated. As frustrating as it is, the liberals have done nothing totalitarian.
2
u/boozefiend3000 Mar 25 '26

"god given rights" lmao.
I love firearms but this is just stupid. Nowhere is the right to own a firearm enshrined in law nor is any right god given. At best, rights are provided by the government because they are an entity given power by the collective.
3
u/BookkeeperFew2671 Mar 25 '26
God given rights are natural rights such as the right to self defense and feed your self both of which apply to guns
-1
u/10081914 Mar 25 '26
In a world without a government hierarchy and without laws, you have as much 'right' to defend yourself as your attacker has in killing you.
If you or I have the right to do anything and everything we want, there are no real rights. Therefore, a power structure is necessary to surrender a portion of your rights so that we can protect our other rights which we may deem more valuable.

I oppose the gun ban and would support activism against it but honestly see zero chance of that happening without it also incorporating a bunch of political objectives that I do not support so good luck with that.
I support economic, environmental, and social justice and the convoy was just a bunch of people angry about covid restrictions, which sucked but were the reality of managing death and injury during a global pandemic, with a sprinkling of white supremacists and grifters in the mix.
I'm concerned with the cost of living, the cost of housing, the cost of groceries, the consolidation of media by politically motivated foreign investors, the suppression of wages, the impacts of climate change etc.
I'm not voting for any oligarch aligned political party just because of one political issue.

This reminds me a lot of the Japanese internment camps of WW2. There is a memorial at the PNE near Hastings in Vancouver and they have a detailed museum that explains the situation and it is run by Japanese who were in the camps. And if you read all the stories, you’ll find that the Japanese Canadians, despite going the legal route with lawyers to stop unlawful detainment and seizure of their property, their property was seized and destroyed anyway. And they were sent to internment camps. If I remember correctly, over 2000 vehicles were seized and sold at auction, and the documents were destroyed. There are pictures of this collection point at the Hastings Raceway.
Even though many Japanese tried the legal route to protect themselves, it did not matter and was a classic case of the Crown doing as the crown does. “Rules for thee, but not for me.“
Obviously in this case, the legal peaceful route was simply not enough and is a stark reminder that even today, the crown continues to operate under this mindset of “rules for thee, but not for me”.
What we can learn from this, is to protect our property rights, legal gun owners must carry out nothing short of mass noncompliance. Otherwise, the Crown wins again.
God Fuck the King.

It seems that it confuses people when you condemn the king. Some people are proud to be part of what is left of the British Empire or commonwealth until it turns on them. It is the King and the monarchy who is the root of many of our problems. The system of monarchy is reflected in legislation and language namely the word “subjects”. Citizens residing in Canada for a long time were referred to as British “subjects” and not citizens. Subiectus being the Latin origin meaning “thrown under or placed beneath” or “lying beneath”. This is no coincidence and is a reflection of the Crown’s willingness to arbitrarily enforce certain rules for certain people whether it be the First Nations, the Japanese, new land rulings, or unlawful arbitrary gun laws to keep certain people “beneath” them.
Or it could be that most of the new Pal owners in the last year on this sub bought a gun idiotically thinking that there would be an American invasion of Canada and are proud to be subjected.

Real men stand up for what they believe in no matter the consequences
We as Canadians need to man up. we have been too complacent for to long
Without risk there is no reward
We need to show up to protest in the thousands with our prohibs in hand for a peaceful protest. To show we are no threat to anyone. Let the police arrest all of us peacefully just to make a statement. The police and liberal will have to make a choice. Arrest thousand or let us walk. Either will be a win for us to show we are not public safety issue.
We need to do something drastic or we will lose this battle.
I for one will not give them anything. Restricted or not and regardless of the penalty. I will stand up for what I believe in

You need to go beg the PM to change his mind.
No election is happening anytime soon, and October is just some short months away from having a criminal record for something you legally acquired and were trained for.
Think that's the only soliciting left now.

Image and text is obvious AI slop. Poster is probably not even a Canadian. Reference to the freedom convoy is probably just there to up the controversy. Sentiments might reflect that of a lot of people here but mind your feeds people.

It is incredible to me that some people still denigrate the Freedom Convoy. People whine about traffic and noise, yet don't seem to care that their freedoms were being stomped on. If you were there, you know the truth- it was the most incredible event in Canadian history. And guess what, Canada started opening up right after as a direct result of the Freedom Convoy.

u/Intrepid_Pop269 Mar 25 '26
I lived in Ottawa during the Convoy and that was the least Canadian action I had seen in a long time. smh. Way to drive away anyone who might have been sympathetic through some serious un-Canadian behavior.

u/Cheap_Discussion5193 Mar 25 '26
And you wonder why the government continues to run roughshod over our liberty. Pathetic.

Seeing the direction that "Canadians" have been heading, then "Canadian Action" isn't working buddy.

u/zefmdf Mar 25 '26
Live there, went there, can assure you it was not a display of incredible people nor was it why restrictions started to be lifted. There were some very nice folks involved for sure, many were not

Restrictions were rescinded because mass vaccination was effective. The only thing the convoy accomplished was pissing a bunch of people off.

The arbitrary posting of firearms that were previously legal is only ONE of many tings wrong.. There are licensed firearms owners who ACTUALLY voted for this federal government.. There are over two million holders of licenses in Canada.. .They did NOT all vote in their own better self interests.. . Until such time as people begin to actually vote in their own best and better self interests things are NOT going to change.. Criminals do not care about laws, they carry and discharge firearms on the streets with increasing frequency and essentially impunity because even when they are caught and charged they are back out on bail and when convicted and sentenced they spend very little time in prison.. Criminals just shot up three Synagogues in Toronto very recently from a Monday night to early Saturday morning - two in the same night.. They used smuggled firearms and ammunition.. Criminalizing ordinary law abiding citizens on an arbitrary basis by deciding after the fact to move the goal posts is ridiculous... a home invasion takes place in Thornhill a law abiding firearms owner shoots and wounds one of the three assailants and the police made the determination that he acted within the law.. The Premier of Ontario called him a hero and expressed that he wished the home owner would have shot him several more times.. but the SAME premier and his Solicitor General do nothing to protect Synagogues with armed body guards - and his government and the ministry of the Attorney General issues the licenses for armed body guards.. They are waiting for Jews to be murdered by criminal thugs it seems so they can send their condolences and prayers.... so even when they HAVE the power to do something about it .. they actually do NOTHING to prevent criminal activity... Talk you see is cheap - action is not happening... They are invested in the status quo...
When I got my license - I was extremely careful about choosing my firearms.. Some carbines with extended capacity magazines.. I was particularly fastidious about my hand gun.. which I can no longer replace or add to as there is a ban in place.. an ARBITRARY ban in place.. None of the firearms I chose has been affected.. The RCMP does not have a record of who has affected guns all of which were acquired prior to the registry and reporting rules occurring - so they send out e-mails informing license holders of deadlines on arbitrary changes in regulations.. Those guns will become safe queens.. impossible to use, impossible to sell... they could be heirlooms ...
What is the answer? Voting for a different government. No amount of protest will fix this idiocy.. Voting is the ONLY way to fix this... Given the state of idiots who are eligible to cast votes.. I am NOT optimistic.. The gun clubs and ranges across this nation must coordinate and campaign on a uniform basis in lock step with the opposition to make them the government...

I agree, we need some type of protest movement. I’m sick of being quiet while the hobby and country I love dies.

Do not do something like the freedom convoy. Not only did it make people literally hate them but it achieved nothing.
The date the mandates ended was when they had planned it to end all along. The convoy people just said they won, even though they actually just stayed until they were supposed to be over anyways. They achieved nothing other than wasting tax payer money on extra policing and the courts time to deal with the resulting lawsuits against them. Not to mention stress out an entire city to the point of near violence.
Do something, just don't do that. Cause if that happens, I'm gonna fuckin give mine back to RCMP just to avoid being associated with group like that.

I hear what you're saying and I respect that. Like I said to a few other people, we would not want to do a copy paste of the freedom Convoy, Maybe not even a protest. someone else made a good point and said in order to change the government's minds we need to change the majority of the peoples mind, by the means in which that's done, I'm not sure, that's why I asked for help.

u/Captain_chutzpah Mar 27 '26
None the less, you brought up the freedom convoy. There is nothing positive to say about the freedom.convey. even if it did achieve its goals, it was obnoxious behavior, except it didn't achieve its goals.
So say, "let's brainstorm ideas to affect change as a community". For sure, go protest. Stand on parliament's lawn in mass with signs. Get media attention while being respectful and making intelligent points.
Cause if you act like a bunch of douche bags, people are just gonna wonder if we aren't choosing wisely when we issue gun licenses.
I'm 100% with you. We are a country of intelligence though. Don't be like America and the "we demand rocket launchers for home defense"

u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 27 '26
That’s fair, and I get where you’re coming from.
The reason I brought up the convoy wasn’t really about the way it was carried out, I agree there were things about it that didn’t help and turned people off. It was more about the sense of unity behind it that stood out to me.
That feeling of people coming together around something they care about is what I was trying to point at, not the approach itself.
I do agree though that if anything like that ever happened around this issue, it would have to be done in a way that’s respectful, reasonable, and actually helps people understand the point instead of pushing them away.
At the end of the day, I think we’re saying the same thing, if people want to be heard, it has to be done in a way that doesn’t hurt the message.

This gun confiscation program finally gave me the push I needed to leave this country. Wife and I are moving stateside in a few months. I just closed my Canadian bank accounts! What a great feeling!

Imagine trying to feed your family with a frozen bank account. That’s what they did to the convoy people

They are not god given rights they are a privilege bestowed by the government. I dont think a angry protest of gun owners will get the sympathy you think it will. A better course of action would be to convince the Canadian public that legal ownership is not the problem and the confiscation program is another wasted money pit.
1
u/Sufficient-Net8238 Mar 25 '26
Yeah, I'm starting to agree that a protest may not be the best course of action and that's exactly why I asked for help with ideas, now the question is how do you convince the Canadian public?
