Buy recommendations Worth the price?
Saw this back in stock at my local gun shop, 357 magnum. Weight and length all felt good, just a little pricy. Wondering if it’s worth the price tag in terms of reliability and value. Also would it make a good hunting rifle?
Price is 2200$
Any recommendations is appreciated, thanks.

Marlin made levers are typically very good.
357mag is great cause you can plink with 38spl.

That's what I plink my Marlin with. Zero recoil.

Ok so the first time I shot 38 out of mine I thought I had a squib because it had so little recoil and a significantly quieter muzzle pop compared to the federal 158gr I shoot.

I once looked up some ballistics charts for 357 and 38 Sp being shot out of different barrel lengths. Turns out 16" is optimal for increasing both velocity and energy, but the recoil is pretty much nil with the 38. I haven't tried 357 yet but from what I've read it's extremely manageable too.

Really just depends what it’s primarily gonna be used for. If only hunting and odd range the 30-30 has much better range.

I have a .44 lever (winchester). Pretty good range on it, and a 240 grain bullet is a thing of beauty. It speaks LOUDLY. I have other rifles, but that's the one that people ask about when it goes off at the range. And with the price of ammo, its almost a no-brainer.

I like mine a lot, I got the 44 magnum one and shoot handloads from it. Definitely one of my favorites to plink with and a reliable companion in the woods. I'd say it's worth it and is definitely reliable, my one complaint was the loading gate screw kept loosening up but a dash of locktite later and it hasn't been an issue since

That’s the Ruger made Marlin 1895sbl?
If yes, the answer is yes. I’ve got one in 45-70. It’s a very well made rifle and goes out of stock often

I have the 44 mag version and I absolutely love it. Definitely worth the price (I paid around $2100 +tax)

The lever was a bit flimsy when I wiggled it, not sure everything else inside. I heard it’s much less powerful over 100 yards?

Buddy has the .44 mag version. He loves it. It's surprisingly light, compact and nimble. Very smooth to cycle, reasonably accurate (3moa).
The only negatives we've experienced so far is that something wacky was going on with the rear sight, it needed to be cranked entirely to one side to achieve zero. Looked super unprofessional, I told my buddy that something had to be mis-machined and that he should pull some measurements and get Ruger to resolve the issue. He decided instead to just remove the rail and rear sight entirely and install Marbles rear sight (not what I would've done but whatever), he's happy with that setup.
Another small issue the gun has is that it desperately needs to be deburred inside. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the case for most new Lever Actions.

My 45-70 had the barrel not clocked correctly causing this issue. Gravel will fix it but of course it takes months.

I’m surprised to hear it needed to be deburred, the fit and finish on Marlins is typically top notch. The actions on mine have been a little stiff out of the box but loosen up with use.

Here's my biased take as the owner of a Henry Big Boy 357. You can get a Henry 357 for $1,372. So the question is, do you want to spend $850 more for almost the same thing? I don't regret my Henry purchase at all, I haven't ever really thought damn I wish I spent the $850 more on the Marlin 357. Does that mean I dislike Marlin? No, I can see my self owning one down the road in a different caliber like 45-70 govt.

Those are nice and they’re worth it, thankfully the 1894 models are easy to get these days and that price is normal retail.
Go for it won’t be disappointed

I got mine last month chamberer in 45-70. Beautiful rifle, smooth lever, the rifle screams quality. I Paid 2500 for mine
Like most firearms, it depends on what you want it for. The sights straight out the box aren't great for accurate shooting at any kind of meaningful range, especially for hunting. If its going to be a hunting rifle, be prepared to get tighter rear apature sights or maybe some kind of scout scope.

I got a Browning BLR in .243. Took my first deer with it in Dec. Throwing out another option, but that's a pretty rifle.

Paid $1750 tax in for mine (.44) in Quebec a year or so ago. I'm about 500 rounds in, shoots and handles like a dream although I'm not a fan of the ghost ring sight. For $2200 it might be worth shopping around if you can afford to wait, unless I'm wrong and prices went up since last year. All in all, solid and gorgeous rifle. You won't regret getting one.

We sell these (oos right now) as well as s&w and henry, the marlins are the nicest by a long shot. 2200 sounds rightish for an sbl but if you can catch it on sale (we run 10% off every so often) its a better deal. But it is a marlin, and if your LGS is selling online, theres a good chance next time your in itll be gone.

Lever actions have gone up in price as a whole. Canada currently doesn't have a lot of stock on anything. For example we don't even have cz 600+, stores just sell cz 600s. For 2200 the price is hefty, would I buy something else yes but that's my opinion. All things aside the rifle is great.

Save a bunch and get one off gunpost/gunnutz. Dont ignore the classic or guide gun either. Ive has both and while i like my trapper, the large loop isnt as nice as the regular size loop.

good lord yes. I've got it in Blued/walnut and am absolutely thrilled. This being even more feature rich is a no brainer. I want the 1895 45-70 in stainless

I couldn't tell you because I have never owned a lever gun or actually even shot one before.
That said, I have been craving one of them for awhile now. They look and feel super cool... But the prices are insane. Not just the gun price but the ammo prices too.
It's feels like an itch I will need to scratch one day though.

I paid around that for this in 45-70. Worth it, but this is my opinion for what I was able to afford.

Modern Marlins are *fine*, but you can get a Winchester in the same caliber for cheaper with better build quality

Absolutely. I have the .44 mag SBL. It’s a forever rifle, an heirloom piece, and it runs every kind of ammunition you can throw into it.
I ran the only box of .44 mag my local store had in at the time, 50 aluminum rounds…it had me a tad nervous, but not one hiccup.
Perfect bear defense gun, and viable deer rifle up to 150 yards

Depends what you want to use for; home defense 44mag, altos you have close neighbors use with caution- but if for hunting 30-30
