Gun and gear reviews “Brand new” Pedersoli sharps from basspro
Got a brand new in box Pedersoli 1874 sharps in the mail today from Basspro and well yikes…. What should I do? It’s obviously been very well used. Is this a return angle?

I'm no expert, but isn't it normal for a firearm to be proofed by shooting a few test rounds through it? Maybe this is just a military thing though.

It is absolutely NOT just a military thing, and from what I can see this is actually a very new firearm that has been fire tested with some packing oils

"Very well used" would be a slight exaggeration. Believe me when I say I understand your frustration with seeing it not being brand new, as i'm pretty anal myself... BUT... good news is:
They shoot rounds through the barrel as part of their Quality Control to ensure it is working and shooting properly.

In what way is it obvious that it’s very well used? Have you looked at a lot of new barrels with a bore scope?

Yea I have looked at several KS arms barrels and 2 IBI barrels

Doesn’t look too bad to me, saw your other post with the patches too. I would assume there’s some combination of fouling from test firing and preservative. I’d rather have a little gunk in the barrel than rust from being left squeaky clean.

Looks like basic fouling from the proof house.
Run some JBs bore paste through it. I bet itll shine right up.

It did clean up but check out my new post. Unless they shot black powder through it at the factory I’d say it was used

Fwiw. Pedersoli guns are sent to a third party proof house for test firing after assembly. So its definitely been shot before it even came to Canada.

Basically all guns are test fired but I was pulling brown rusty patches. You’ll see them when my new post goes up / gets loaded

Most north American manufacturing is random sample test firing, not every gun, unlike Europe where CIP mandates it for commercial sale.
Any chance this was a model sitting on their gun rack and its just preservation oil turns tacky and thick?
I still wouldn't be worried about it. Go shoot it. (Unless your new post has some actual rust pitting we cant see)

Hey thanks for sharing. I had no idea that CIP in Europe had a mandate to test every gun for commercial use. It absolutely could be some kind of oil that turned brown and tacky

What model sharps is it?
Ive had several of them and they all shot great.
How long till you get a obnoxiously long Malcom scope?

It’s that cheap model that basspro just sold out of. It’s the pedersoli 1874 sharps “hunter”. It’s a discontinued model apparently. The fit and finish is honestly great. Barrels a bit thin and it is a 1-18 twist. Barrel length is 30”.
I got it for $1299. Which is a steal I think. I also shoot a Pedersoli tryon 45 cal target rifle and the things an absolute hammer. As far as black powder muzzle loaders go.
Switzers April auction should have a couple Malcom’s for sale. You might catch me bidding on those =D

Don't look too deep into this... it's unnecessary. You can shine a light and take a look but always think about that your getting vs what you paid for.

New gun barrels are bright and shiny while used ones appear “dirty” like in this video. I’m not sure if my posts are private but I’ve published other videos on Reddit of my scoping brand new KS arms and IBI barrels

Maybe it’s just gun-snobs. But there have been reports of their quality control slipping since the pandemic.

They dont always hit the nail on the head thats for sure. I straight up returned one of their Traditional Hawkens due to absolutely dismal exterior finish. It looked like it had been stored in a humid sea can in Italy for a Summer. My budget tier Traditions Kentucky Rifle blew its fit and finish out of the water haha. My Pedersoli Sharps appear to have a super crooked tang. I had to shim the Pedersoli brand Tang sight like .035" over a 1/4 inch just to get it level. Makes the machining on an SKS seem surgical lol.
