They 100% did. They started super engaged with civilians during the SA20/15 and then the IUR and then I think black MRR came out but and then eventually lost interest I believe around the time of a Tan coloured MRR and completely stopped selling to civilians.

Sad part ? I bought my gsg-16 in pink as a range plinker after the first buy back and actually said " yeah but at least theyll never ban THAT"

Not everything is about the buyback. We massively increased defence spending this year, so the CAF needs to sink the funds into something or risk having to return the money.
CMAR has been on the books for a while and is one of the easier programs to fast track given that its already been field trialed and is an incremental update to the C8A3.

Bet you're fun at parties! On the bright side, there have been some public expenditure announcements that are promising, and sounds like recruitment is up. I'm hoping our civil defense posture evolves as well.

New equipment could help in certain areas, if we have modern jets we might get more air force signups, but I think the reality is that a lot of young people don't feel like their country is worth fighting and dying for right now.
Liberal policies seem to universally crush military recruitment. Biden had issues, but now Trump's military is seeing great numbers.

You also need real operations to get involved in and keep looking forward to, or else troops leave after a little while. We dont have those, we have Latvia.

This is a good point. Very interesting to see how the public hates to see action because of the risk of troops dying, but that is what people signed up to do. I mean, they didn't sign up to die, but they signed up to do the job and take some level of risk, which should absolutely be mitigated.

Yeah, im telling you as a ex regf guy, this is what troops want the most often. It doesnt have to be that kinetic and risky even, but we need real operations to deploy on and we dont have many of those, and the ones that we have had over the past decade were small. (Also, not counting latvia or Poland again, those are effectively just long maple resolves).

Most of the guys I served with got out after Afghanistan was done. Nothing to do and nowhere to go wasn't appealing to a lot of us.

C7 and c8 needed an upgrade, but yea the c9 kinda sucks. The non-free-floated barrel, the wobbly handguards, non'adjustable gas block, and awful c79 sight were always issues.
What we really need are drones, air defence and man portable anti-tank, anti-air systems.

colt backed out of the buyback program.
Colt canada has been making the rifles for canada for a long time. they are the lowest bidder that can meet the high volume demands layed out in the bidding process.
that's why they have the license to make the Tikka T3x for the CAF. they also got the contract to fix the laminated rangers rifles that where splitting from the cheap glue they used. They have made the C7/C8 since dimatco was bought out in 2005

Not sure why folks are down on this. It seems a meaningful improvement to the Canadian Forces and will employ Canadians during these trying times. As for everyone shitting on CZ there is much more evidence they will have nothing to do with the buyback than the rumours thy will. The company has publicly denied any involvement and everyone I know who complained got the same response”Colt Canada and CZ will have no involvement in any gun buyback program” this is just one confirmation of that. https://www.huntinggearguy.com/news/canada-gun-buyback-failure-and-update-for-2026/ Here’s an idea how about you start the civil defence corp by giving the hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners set to be criminals in October a weekend or 2 of advanced training and once completed let them keep their rightful possessions.

Anyone else actually seethe rifle they want to swap it with just did a quick search it is literally to me atleast a HK416 lmao like colt re did HK’s design I think it’s retarded I’ve never served but pretty sure the c8s would’ve been fine and maybe let’s get a few more LAV’s since we’re sending no phone a 1/3 of our APC’s to Ukraine but nah spend 300 million on a rifle contract that you could’ve likely gotten cheaper if you just went to Germany and asked for HK416’s

I don't see how it's "literally a 416" considering one of the defining features is the short stroke piston which we are not getting. It's a more modern rifle for sure with some advantages, but please come up with something better than lmao hk416 lol
