Application / Regulation advice Backland hunter magwell

Hey guys looking for information before purchasing anything. Iv been eyeing the backland hunter and am wondering about the legality of filing the magwell to fit stanag mags. I understand this is Reddit and not a lawyer. But to my understanding of the law, the gun is classified by its action. And filing the magwell does not change this. The firearm uses crypto mags which are known for being bad. I got into a debate with a local firearm store about the mod I seen on gunnuts and am wondering if by doing so I’m putting myself at risk. TIA

You can legally modify the magwell.

I figured so. But they kicked me out of the store and said I was creating a prohibited firearm by doing so. Appreciate the input.

Gun store employees not knowing the law is a tale as old as time. Magazine compatibility has never been a factor in determining whether or not a firearm is prohibited, hence modifying a firearm to fit a different magazine is defacto legal.

Modifying a MAGAZINE to fit a particular firearm can potentially be problematic, but it depends on the MAGAZINE capacity/design. For instance, modifying a Bison MRX magazine(20 rounds) to fit into a STANAG magwell (of a rifle) would constitute creating/possessing a prohibited device.
