Why would the 45 be selected over the 17 I wonder. Also curious if they’re getting gen 6

16

u/ItchYouCannotReach Mar 16 '26

I imagine to make plainclothes concealed carry somewhat easier. With the S&W they were issuing 2 different versions with different mags and grips.

9

u/andrew416705 Mar 16 '26

I don’t think that’s it. The grip length and thickness is what ‘prints’, not the shorter slide. 19 or 49 would arguably be better in that capacity.

4

u/FrankDodger Mar 16 '26

I think he's talking about the model 5946 being a bit bigger than the 3953, if im not mistaken, the 3953 is a single stack narrower body, that still uses the same upper slide.

6

u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down Mar 16 '26

45's a bit lighter and probably slightly better balanced than the 17 is; plus, sight radius doesn't matter on guns that have optics.

1

u/SwearingNinja Mar 17 '26

But the barrel length does matter.

4

u/iatekane Mar 16 '26

Weighs a bit less without reducing capacity, might help offset the additional weight of that optic and light.

Also little quicker/easier to draw from a holster with the shorter barrel, especially when in a vehicle.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Likely just due to a better fit for smaller officers. If it was 30 yrs ago, and 99% of cops were men the 17 would be a no brainer, just like when they selected the S&W.

The 45 provides a good midsize option for everyone and the swappable grips can go up and down for people on the small and larger ends of the spectrum

14

u/andrew416705 Mar 16 '26

The 45 and 17 have identical grip dimensions. The only difference is the length of the slide / barrel.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Yes and shorter barrel would probably be easier to manipulate and handle for smaller officers. It’s also more practical for sitting in a car jammed up against a centre console all day for primarily right handed shooters. I previously carried a 17, however I’m left handed and never had that issue being jammed up against a seat

u/rastamasta45 Mar 16 '26

It’s a good thing no RCMP officer can train on their own time with their own glocks to get more proficient outside of their once a year shoot and a single box of ammo.

We’re all safer for it, thank you LPC!

u/Cager_CA Mar 16 '26

Hide your kids,  your wife and any firehalls

58

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 16 '26

Make sure to report illegal firearms owned by your neighbour so the RCMP can do absolutely nothing.

49

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Mar 16 '26

Correction: they'll do absolutely nothing unless they have a PAL.

Then they'd come at him with full force lol

43

u/gamercast1337 Mar 16 '26

What about reporting neighbour's for having a 1 to 1 replica of a rcmp car and is very sketchy and gets 100k snitch bonus from the rcmp? Should I report them to the rcmp too?

20

u/AdditionalLoss7274 Mar 16 '26

Hey, you! Stop noticing. You're not supposed to notice.

8

u/gamercast1337 Mar 16 '26

Well someone's gotta notice because the average voter ain't lmao

5

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 17 '26

Absolutely! The RCMP's job isn't done until nothing at all is done about something.

Obviously, the solution is to ban more guns because we have money to burn and people to throw under the bus. 👌

6

u/rYrYCN114 Mar 16 '26

I’d say lock your doors too, but that didn’t stop them from kicking them down, ask the folks in High River

10

u/gamercast1337 Mar 16 '26

Nah I know them firehalls will betray us any time now. I got anti- firehall insurance for that reason. And as an extra Good thing I know the rcmp got me covered in this. Its happening soon trust me!!

10

u/BilboBaggSkin Mar 16 '26

Wait they can’t go to the range with their rcmp handguns?

39

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

We can. The Firearms act exempts police and military personnel so it is still permitted to go shoot, the comment above is totally baseless.

Am I grabbing my patrol carbine to go shoot in a busy public range in downtown Calgary on my time off? No. But RCMP detachments are usually in rural areas and have a ton of agreements with small ranges and local farmers that are more than happy to have members stop in and go shoot any time they want.

13

u/MasterScore8739 Mar 16 '26

I think this person is referring to their non-service weapon. So they can’t take their personally bought firearm to the range for use.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

No they can’t, although bringing a non-service weapon isn’t going to do much to help anyone improve their shooting on duty with a different platform. Even before the changes to the firearms act, rcmp members have been charged (and convicted) for using non-service weapons off duty for non compliance to things like obtaining a transport permit, etc.

Most RCMP members and cops Ive worked with don’t even have a firearms license or own any firearms other than their service weapons so it really isn’t changing much.

13

u/nerdsrule73 Mar 16 '26

Frankly I think that's terrible. If you are working with guns you should have the same level of training every Canadian firearm owner in Canada has PLUS the police training.

The RCMP used to require a PAL from applicants decades ago, then they switched to running the PAL course at DEPOT, then they stopped. No wonder most of them don't know the difference between restricted, prohibited and non-restricted firearms.

8

u/MasterScore8739 Mar 16 '26

I can’t say much different from my experiences either. It’s almost surprising how few people have a firearms license who work with them on a regular basis.

That said, I wouldn’t entirely discount training on a different handgun compared to what is carried on duty. It might not have the exact same feel, but it works a similar skill set and I’m sure it would help improve qualification scores.

15

u/High_rise_guy Mar 16 '26

Pistol training on a slightly different pistol is better than not training on anything else. Example from some fictional scenario, if the RCMP shot the army’s Sig P320s routinely and their service Glock once per year, they would should better with that Glock after a year of Sig than if nothing at all.

8

u/RYRK_ Mar 16 '26

I think it's a little much to claim practicing with a different pistol does nothing to improve general pistol shooting. I practiced using my Beretta 92 and my pistol shooting is much improved. As well, Glocks are probably the most popular modern handgun meaning a lot of people would own them outside of work if they were allowed.

2

u/mischling2543 Mar 16 '26

He was talking about owning a copy of your service weapon to practice on your own time. As former infantry, tons of people used to buy AR-15s for that purpose because they're similar enough to practice with effectively. Nowadays you can't do shit to practice on your own.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

As former military, the rules I had in the CAF were much stricter. Firearms were always locked up in the armoury at work and there was virtually no chance to practice on your own time, unless you owned the same firearm as you’ve said. RCMP, we’re allowed to bring our weapons home and in a lot of places it’s required because we’re on call after hours or have side jobs in other units, in addition to our general duty positions and can be called out at any time. I can take my sidearm to the range on my time off any time I want, and even on duty I can grab a box of ammo from the lock up and go to the range and shoot if i have a chance to. I could never do that in the military, and even if I could there’s the whole to do of notifying range control and getting clearance to do so.

There’s virtually no need to own a copy or clone of your service weapon to get practice in the RCMP.

1

u/BilboBaggSkin Mar 16 '26

Yeah they go to my local range sometimes.

1

u/EatAss-FartFast Mar 17 '26

Yeah that’s not happening at the CAF unless you’re CANSOFCOM or something. I can’t just go and sign out my C7 service rifle to go shooting on my own time. We are only doing our quals once per year and even though the minimum standard is pretty easy to pass, it doesn’t necessarily make me want to be your fire team partner.

When we had the civilian Colt SA20 (civilian variant of the C7A2) available to us on the civilian side was when my drills and proficiency with my service rifle actually, noticeably better. And also at my own personal cost.

So your point is policy-wise valid. But invalid from a practicality standpoint. Might be different for police, but it’s impractical for military.

10

u/GiveElaRifleShields Mar 16 '26

That might increase their ability to protect Canadians

7

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Mar 16 '26

gasp that might improve public safety! We can't have that!

--Gary, probably

39

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

RCMP annual qualification is once a year, any Mountie I know that cares about their job is shooting way more than that a year. Detachments and units have additional ammo you can literally pull out any time you want and go shoot off above and beyond the once a year qual.

4

u/justbob806 Mar 16 '26

That is 100% incorrect. I go to the range with my SIL and a couple of her workmates more often than that🤷‍♂️

2

u/IDriveAZamboni Mar 17 '26

I will say the local RCMP detachments are out at my range every Friday training both with their handguns and rifles. They’re pretty good shots.

1

u/Initial-West-5061 Mar 31 '26

Well I train and shoot on my own but. I pay for the range

70

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

Cool gun but fuck the RCMP.

7

u/JanielDones8 Mar 16 '26

I just wanna say I know some amazing rural officers in northern Sask that put in serious hours and get nothing but a shit sandwich from both the communities and the uppers and do not deserve it in the slightest. So yes, fuck the rcmp leadership in eastern Canada.

22

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Mar 16 '26

Finally, something from this century.

18

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

Why would you rejoice in this? Theyll have cool guns when they come to get you on the LPC's orders. Cause thats all they are. Goons for the LPC.

26

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

 Goons for the LPC.

RCMP management and their union have already been crystal clear they’re taking no part in the gun buyback or enforcement. Most contract provinces that employ the RCMP have also prohibited the RCMP or any other police force from participating so the entire point is moot.

There’s no such orders from Ottawa, let alone the LPC to do any such thing.

9

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

I advise you to read up on his Brenda Lucki and the LPC collaborated to push the may 2020 gun ban

8

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

While largely drawn up in response to the NS shootings, and pushed by Lucki, there has been repeated push back from the RCMP and police in general across Canada since it was introduced (and Lucki long since removed from the head of the RCMP)

1

u/grandfundaytoday Mar 16 '26

RCMP seems pretty enthusiastic in it's firearms classification role.

-2

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

I dont think the RCMP itself has actually come out against the buyback, that would have been huge news. There is nothing to indicate that the leadership itself isnt on board. The union isnt really reflective of the leadership. Sure I dont think the average officer is for the bans, but they have to do what theyre told.

Why are you trying so hard to absolve the RCMP of their role in all of this? There is no indication that theyve changed from the Lucki days

2

u/Livid_sumo Mar 16 '26

Why are you so mad tho ?

0

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 17 '26

I have memory that spans longer than the last few weeks and im in no hurry to trust the RCMP?

1

u/Livid_sumo Mar 17 '26

Must be hard to be a factory worker I guess, im sure you face a lot of controversy

6

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Mar 16 '26

People tend to forget that the RCMP is a very large organization and the contract policemen have little to nothing in common with the Ottawan bureaucrats apart from the logo on their uniform.

IMO they really should've separated them. Move the bureaucrats to Public Safety (they already answer to them anyways) and make it a strictly police organization agaij. Right now the government just lumps whatever law enforcement adjacent department under the RCMP umbrella. It's like a weird mix of the French Gendamerie and the FBI.

2

u/gamercast1337 Mar 16 '26

People also need to remember that they WILL do whatever the government tells them to. Freedom convoy? Cleared out by RCMP. That ostrich shit from last year? RCMP.  I could go back so far and find a time the RCMP never turned down their orders. They may drag their feet a little bit but they WILL enforce the governments will, since thats literally their point of existing.

They should be separated yes and the people on the ground (the officers) may not agree with what they are doing but at the end of the day, they do it.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

They did what the law compels them to do, not the government.

Freedom convoy was an illegal protest that infringed on the freedom of movement for others by blocking roads and highways. In Alberta at coutts, it was also against provincial legislation which prohibited interfering with critical infrastructure, ie the highway. Subsequent freedom protests have popped up and the protestors were smart enough to lawfully stand on the sides of the roads and allowed to protest away to their hearts desire.

Ostrich farm? Federal law compels the destruction of livestock that is diseased and has been done hundreds, if not thousands of times, before without the RCMP ever getting involved until that one spot because some grifters figured out how to make money from it. Again, the RCMP were there because they were compelled to enforce a court order.

No one in Ottawa or sitting in government is telling the RCMP or any other police force to intervene other than to enforce the laws that are already written. Whether it’s the RCMP or someone else in a different police uniform, it’ll be the same result when the law requires it.

2

u/grandfundaytoday Mar 16 '26

After the fact it's been determined by the SCC that the imposition of the emergencies act was not justified. Just because Justin didn't like it doesn't mean it was illegal.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of scaremongering!

13

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

Except, you know, that one time the RCMP commissioner literally colluded with the LPC to push the original OIC that started it all after NS.

But please; don’t let me get in the way of empty sanctimonious grandstanding

15

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Mar 16 '26

Would you say the same thing if the CPC has a majority right now?

Would you rather have an underfunded, undertrained, under-equipped police force that is overall incompetent, aka Nova Scotia 2020 all over again?

11

u/uber_poutine Mar 16 '26

Cops have always been a tool of the rulers/owners. This doesn't change when they put on a red or a blue tie.

If you work for a living, the best possible outcome of any interaction with the police is that nothing happens to you.

7

u/717Luxx Mar 16 '26

and that fear, worry, whatever you want to call it, that your livelihood could be impaired by state sanctioned violence, is exactly the point of the modern police force. compliance.

3

u/uber_poutine Mar 16 '26

I mean, fear, worry, a realistic assessment of power structures and historical precedence... call it what you want, really.

1

u/717Luxx Mar 16 '26

its perfectly valid as a fear, as a worry, as an assessment of power structures and historical precedence.

the threat of injury or death, restrictions of your rights or many other consequences, by a member of the police or the system at large, is very real.

3

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

It absolutely does matter however a governments willingness/ interest in using the police to oppress people, which the LPC has more than demonstrated

6

u/ActCompetitive1171 Mar 16 '26

Would you say the same thing if the CPC has a majority right now?

Would the CPC be pushing the gun "buyback"?

9

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 16 '26

If they think they have something to gain, yes.

Gun control has been a bipartisan effort in Canada, unfortunately.

5

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

This hasn’t been the case in 30 years.

That’s like saying the LPC might ban gay marriage because they were against it at some point

2

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Sociopolitical winds can change quickly, and we're in quite the storm right now.

I stand for the values I believe in, and I am not loyal to any political party that doesn't behave.

If we all treated politics less like the idiot team sport it's degenerated into, society at large would be better off.

Instead, we've sold our governments to billionaire-owned corporations who have our media and politicians in their pocket.

1

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 17 '26

I mean I agree but until it changes the CPC is the only sane bet

1

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 17 '26

Agreed, but I also expect the CPC to drag their feet if they do get into office.

1

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 17 '26

Simply no use in pontificating about this. This is like someone bleeding out and instead of stopping the bleed(getting the libs out of office), you theorize about if the subject would even survive surgery.

Pollievre has stood pretty firm on helping us out despite their being very little benefit in openly saying so, when other leaders like Otoole would have thrown us under the bus already

I don’t know. My entire adult life the LPC has been in power and I’ve seen how in bed they are with each other. That’s what I’m basing my statement on, the last 11 years

Yeah we just got the post about this on our infoweb. Will be nice to have a duty pistol that is actually not decades obsolete, though I won’t hold my breath for the rollout to happen on schedule.

6

u/DougMacRay617 Mar 16 '26

Gotta make sure the goons are ready with new gear before they begin the confiscation rounds.

1

u/Afrocowboyi Mar 17 '26

Well at least the extrajudicial executions of civilians will done more precisely and with more flare.

1

u/nejnedau Mar 17 '26

with the turned in ones going to tip the scales in the Ukraine war??? everything helps ??

1

u/GregariousK Mar 22 '26

Well, I was completely f*cking wrong. I'd have put my money on the CZ P-10.

1

u/andersonmat Mar 16 '26

I'm surprised they picked the "mailbox" optic instead of a more open optic like an SRO... but I guess the SRO is much more fragile 😬

11

u/OniDelta al Mar 16 '26

Open optics aren’t the best for duty use, especially in Canada. Imagine going to draw on a threat and your SRO window is full of snow or other debris? The ACRO having a rear lens instead of a cavity is less likely to be obscured and can be quickly cleaned off with a quick swipe of your thumb. Obscured optic drills don’t apply here because the snow or whatever will prevent you from seeing the dot. That only works for the front lens.

1

u/andersonmat Mar 16 '26

Yeah, I don't disagree, just projecting my personal preference. Obviously there are other more important constraints other than my opinion :-)

5

u/EnvironmentBright697 Mar 16 '26

SRO isn’t duty rated. If they went open emitter probably would have been Trijicon RMR HD which is approved for duty pistol use in the FBI along the type 2 RMR and Acro P-2. Love mine, the auto brightness works great.

1

u/Xaxxus Mar 16 '26

Couldn’t they go with the delta point pro instead? That’s what the US military uses.

-2

u/violent-trashpanda Mar 16 '26

I literally dont care for the rcmp. Bootlicker liberal gestapos

-1

u/steeleclipse2 Mar 16 '26

Wait, 9mm? I thought service was .40 in Canada

13

u/ReturnOk7510 Mar 16 '26

Nah, most departments have gone back to 9mm since 40 S&W doesn't offer enough of a step up in energy to make up for the amount of extra recoil and lower magazine capacity, especially for shooters of questionable ability.

1

u/steeleclipse2 Mar 16 '26

Makes sense.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Almost every agency in Canada has been using 9mm for 20+ years. A few in Ontario still use .40 but they’ve been swapping to 9mm as pistols are replaced as 9mm is cheaper and modern rounds have a similar stopping power as a .40 without the added cost.

1

u/steeleclipse2 Mar 16 '26

Ah! Gotcha. I'm from Ontario, so I must have drawn that idea from there.

-18

u/Pun1sher999 Mar 16 '26

I guess that had to reinvent the wheel and doubled down on the mistakes every agency made with the .40 and went with an even more recoiling cartridge.

The .9mm p+ with modern bullet design has time and time again shown the extra umph of the .40 and .45 isn’t worth it for more rounds and better follow up of the .9mm and is why the FBI and ABC agencies went back to the .9mm

16

u/Creepyrat762 Mar 16 '26

What are u talking about? Glock 45 is in 9mm

14

u/DoYouGetSarcasm Mar 16 '26

Wait till this guy (and the idiots upvoting him) finds out that the ar15 isn't chambered in .15 and the ak47 also isn't changed in 47 cal...

3

u/EnglishmanInMH Mar 16 '26

47 cal? You mean 47mm right?... right? 🤪

3

u/ReturnOk7510 Mar 16 '26

the ak47 also isn't changed in 47 cal...

Babe wake up new wildcat round dropped

7

u/lee--carvallo Mar 16 '26

I thought the G45 is chambered in 9mm? Either way, still beats the current issue S&W. Thing's heavy as a rock and I couldn't imagine lugging the thing around on my belt for 12 hrs at a time

4

u/StevenMcStevensen al Mar 16 '26

The 45 is a 9mm model. There is no meaning to Glock model numbers, it’s literally just the order in which they were introduced. The Glock 45 is a 9mm model with a compact-length slide and fullsize grip, basically just a mix between the 17 and 19 dimensionally.

5

u/Geralt-of-Rivai Mar 16 '26

But the Glock 17 shoots 17mm right?

1

u/Pun1sher999 Mar 16 '26

I am aware, I just forgot the g17 and g19 had a Frankenstein.

3

u/WeightedDips95 Mar 16 '26

Simpleton! the 45 in glock 45 stands for the amount of bullets it hold in its assault clip-- 45.

3

u/Pun1sher999 Mar 16 '26

I fucked up forgot Glock made a frankengun G17+G19.

I haven’t been in the pistol game since the Liberals took them away.
