Misc just received an automated call from the RCMP to remind me of the buyback. +1 (226) 8.7.7 3.8.5.1 is the number. impossible to call back

emails are pretty annoying, but literally calling while im busy at work, only to hear a robotic voice to tell me i have to surrender my guns? i think that’s a bit too far. seems like they aren’t getting what they expected and are starting to panic a bit

You know what’s wild, all this costs money, so they’re burning more money before they even get to the collection phase.

This is going to be so over budget.

What I don’t understand, they tell us “you’re not guaranteed to be paid”

Then they’re shocked people aren’t participating….shocked pikachu face

even if we had 100% chances of being paid the correct amount for each guns, i think a lot of us would still not participate purely out of principle. but the fact that you’re not even sure of getting paid and compensation amounts being incorrect is the absolute cherry on top lol

It’s not going to be over budget. They’re not paying for guns. At all.

Well yeah. I mean, didn't Gary let it slip that they don't want gun owners taking the payments and simply buying another gun? And that they were looking at having a committee look at the SKS because they don't want us buying that either.

To.the people behind this, having us run out the clock isn't a problem. They have no problem spending the next 20 years slowly arresting and imprisoning gun owners piecemeal. That would be essentially free and justify ever further restrictions. Hell, I wouldn't put it past them to use the wide spread noncompliance as justification to pull even more raw shit. As it is, I cynically assume it was designed to fail so we can be made to look like the bad guys here.

What we need is some (legal) way of making this high-handed boondoggle actually have negative repercussions on the architects of this plan. As it is, even if this current attempt ends up being fully reversed by a successive government, the architects go unscathed and will try again as soon as they have the power to do so.

I'm pretty sure we have around 30k in the army and around 15k in the reserves. Over 2 million Canadians are PAL holders. So I'd say they really don't have the numbers to come and take them considering local police are telling the government to go fuck themselves as well.

Oh I know. That's why I said they'd spend 20 yrs arresting everyone piecemeal. When the amnesty period ends, there's going to be millions of paper criminals with "radioactive" evidence in their gun safes or cases.

Shooting on Crown land? There's a chance a Fish and Wildlife officer will happen by and check your firearm against a list. No range or gunsmith will have anything to do with those guns.

Gary Mauser estimated that administering the collection phase alone (not compensation or transport/storage/destruction) would cost at least $1.7B, based on extrapolating NZ data. And that was before the OIC bans in 2024 and 2025.

There is no way that this doesn't go over budget unless the government literally just gives up and lets people keep whatever remains out there.

LOL The cost of the actual firearms is a nothing burger

It's everything else that adds up.

They spent over a $BILLION dollars trying to build a registry for long arms in the 90s. That's with zero collection of anything, over a quarter of a century ago

Already the program is out of money. I saw a post recently that if you turn in a H&K 416 you will receive $2.00 back.

I saw that too, literally unreal

2

u/SpizzinFire Mar 08 '26

its costing the taxpayer, and chances are theyre embezzling the money like they did for arrivecan

this isnt a gun grab its a money grab, i think the estimate is that this program around 25k per gun. of course your cut is only 25 cents (if ur lucky)

Added to blocked caller list 👍

thats about what i did. knowing it was recorded, i just said “go fuck yourself” and hung up lol

2

u/DougMacRay617 Mar 07 '26

Howd you know it was recorded?

2

u/Spiritual_Rope_6952 Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

those robotic voice automated calls are recorded 99.99% of the time. coming from the rcmp im pretty sure it was recorded

u/SniperTeamTango Mar 06 '26

thats fucking unacceptable. People in your workplace could cause annoyance if they saw you both getting and/or ignoring a call from the RCMP.

That's hilarious.

Because clearly all gun owners didn't already get the emails, see all the news stories, announcements, and all the targeted ads they've been putting out on the internet, and apparently TV ads too? Some guys said they saw them on TV even.

Like how much is the government spending just on advertising the program? 100 million? 200 million? Just to fucking advertise it everywhere? It's clearly failing horrible when they're having to try to convince gun owners by buying YouTube ad time and random Google ads on websites.

Now they're cold calling like fucking telemarketers and Nigerian princes. I guess it's fitting. The only phone calls I seem to get nowadays are from scammers and spam calls, I guess the government is getting in on scam calls now too. Maybe they'll ask us to send them Apple and Amazon gift cards next?

I wonder if this was a potential scammer or something along those lines. Wasn’t there a data leak awhile ago that got PAL owners names and numbers? I wonder if they could be checking for actual people to answer the call to confirm their info? Maybe the RCMP aren’t actually involved with this? Just a thought

4

u/Spiritual_Rope_6952 Mar 07 '26

that could be a possibility

Probably one of Gary's cousins

2

This is hilarious

3

u/Afrocowboyi Mar 07 '26

wild to see where the budget is going.

3

u/pickledshallots Mar 07 '26

Sounds like a scam call tbh

at $2 per gun they can afford to spend our taxes this way

6

u/RedditBlowsHarder Mar 07 '26

Seems like a violation of privacy.

3

u/dgod40 Mar 07 '26

Why? We provided the government our address, phone number, email when we got our PALs for the express purpose of them contacting us about our guns.

We can have a discussion about licensing and registrations but that is different from this.

5

u/RedditBlowsHarder Mar 07 '26

It just comes down to privacy law. You aren't guaranteed that the message is reaching the intended recipient by a robocall, whereas something addressed or emailed to an individual at least has some protections. I used to work in gambling counseling and had to make sure that any phone number provided belonged to the client, and if a shared line that anyone else answering would be aware of the problem. My concern would be somebody else in the house who may not have knowledge, finding out about firearms and or the sudden illegality of them from answering the phone.

2

u/dgod40 Mar 07 '26

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't think about it that way. I always forget that some people still have home phones and this could be troubling to people who know nothing about what's going on.

2

u/jay370gt Mar 08 '26

A forced buyback without compensation isn’t just confiscation, it’s robbery.

4

u/peggory Mar 06 '26

I thought the province wasn’t participating?

3

u/dgod40 Mar 07 '26

Which province? OP got a call from the RCMP. That's a federal agency.

1

u/peggory Mar 07 '26

Apologies I assumed it was a western province. AB isnt participating

2

u/Spiritual_Rope_6952 Mar 07 '26

cries in quebecer* 🥲

u/MikeBrowne2010 Mar 07 '26

Sounds like desperation

I'm assuming you have a restricted so they are doing everything to notify you. They are not panicking. They are doing this so if/when they cancel your R/PAL they can say "we notified you at your email and phone, what more can we do? You were warned."

Also until this is verified by more people I would take this with a grain of salt. Not calling OP a liar because he could literally be the first on the call list. The last big post was a person saying "I know someone who knows someone who was told their PAL wouldn't be renewed unless they participated in the buyback". Literally no proof was given and the screenshots were nonsense.

They want the guns, 100% but some of the stuff being posted is questionable to say the least.

u/Spiritual_Rope_6952 Mar 07 '26

no thats the funniest part. i don’t have a RPAL, i only have a regular PAL, and i don’t even own any model of non restricted that turned to prohibited. everything ive ever owned and still own as of today is non-restricted. i really don’t understand the purpose of that call to be honest
