News / Politics / Activism FIRST READING: Gun 'buy back' has cost $24,000 per gun

Mar 06 '26
Take that, crime...

u/rastamasta45 Mar 06 '26
This will stop the criminals! I feel safer already! Also “if it saves one life I’m willing to pay $50,000 per gun”
Also also
“Why do I have to wait 9 months for an MRI scan, I’m in pain now, ELBOWS UP”
41
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Mar 06 '26
“With Assault Style Firearms off the streets i wont ever need an MRI”

Assault style weapon = “whatever we claim it is, especially if it’s scary and we don’t understand it” -current government I guess

u/Barbarian_818 Mar 07 '26
Anything they can show slides of at a fundraiser and have a fearful, non gun owning urban group just empty their wallets.
1
u/BrettFromThePeg Mar 08 '26
9 months? Been waiting 15 months and they haven’t made the APPOINTMENT yet
6
u/Former-Homework-7833 Mar 06 '26
That number makes me wonder if other crimes were committed, be cheaper to give well above market value if you want the guns, get way better compliance, and even if you paid citizens 10k per gun it would likely be cheaper than paying for an entirely new bureaucracy with 50 levels of administrations to rubber stamp things to justify their existence inflating costs. I’m not for the buy back, but this honestly looks like some people made a lot of money with a veneer of politics to launder the theft lol like create scheme to funnel money into and siphon some off 2)target citizens that are less likely vote for them anyways, 3) cherry pick data. 4) make money off tax payers and ultimately abandon the reprehensible program anyways

This article didn’t work for me, but I checked out Yahoo’s article.. love these two quotes.
“This means that for just three firearms turned over as part of the program, the federal government could have instead paid the starting salary of a full-time RCMP officer ($71,191).”
“For every two guns, the government could have purchased a new fully-equipped patrol car.”
Amazing, ludicrously stunning incompetence.
Exactly how much safer have we gotten removing firearms from law abiding citizens, instead of hiring more RCMP officers for a police force that is very understaffed and overworked???
55
u/King-Conn Mar 06 '26
They're right, we literally COULD be hiring many more RCMP officers to actually patrol and be stationed in more remote areas of this country. But no, we will waste money on this lol.
6
u/Former-Homework-7833 Mar 06 '26
Arguably less safe, they’re disarming the people that did it lawfully and continue to follow the law, while doing not a whole lot to curb the illegal guns. So now criminals that have illegal guns can be marginally less worried about guns if they break into someone’s home. It’s not a great thing to be teaching illegal firearm wielding criminals which seems to be a problem in Ontario especially right now

Bingo,
Don’t forget 10,000 of that is for Gary to stuff his fat cheeks for the winter
20
u/Jimbo_Slice1919 Mar 06 '26
Hey man, Gary needs that money to fairly compensate his tenant as promised. You don’t expect him to take that money out of his own pocket, now do you?
10
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 06 '26
That tenant has definitely been evicted by Gary by now. Guaranteed. That guy actually put quite a bit on the line by going after lil Gary like that. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a few "firearms inspections" happen in the last few months too, having the RCMP come by and ask to see how his firearms are stored (they're allowed to do that to anyone I believe, but it is very, very rare to actually do).
2
u/Dependent_Account603 Mar 07 '26
Id be kinda surprised if he got evicted over it - Gary doesn't wanna add anything to the news story.
1
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 07 '26
Its the CFO that initiates that, and they have to make an appointment.

u/coffeeofwar Mar 06 '26
He is a good example of shaped like a bag of milk as well
4
u/JustWonder2097 Mar 06 '26
We don’t have milk bags out here in the west. Definitely want to keep it that way.
5
u/SadisticChipmunk Mar 06 '26
As much as everyone loves to ridicule milk bags... I find them are more convenient than anything else. And they usually are cheaper too.
3
u/coffeeofwar Mar 06 '26
I miss them lol they where easier to store in your fridge and you could freeze them
4
u/Former-Homework-7833 Mar 06 '26
Milk could be a lot cheaper if we didn’t have what’s essentially a dairy mafia keeping quotas exact and dumping milk down drains.

sounds pretty accurate for anything related to the buyback... the entire thing is pretty low quality.

u/BackToTheCottage Mar 06 '26
I would not be surprised if one or more of the mods were paid LPC employees. They were caught moderating canadahousing.

u/Lumindan Mar 06 '26
I'm just happy they aren't using the same ol ar15 stock image

u/Dartmouth-Hermit Mar 06 '26
Kinda making me wish I had got a Norinco M14 clone though.

u/Response-Cheap Mar 06 '26
I always wanted one of those. Was planning to get my license in 2010 but didn't get it til 24. Pretty much everything I ever wanted has been banned.
2
u/Dartmouth-Hermit Mar 06 '26
Yeah, it sucks. Manual actions until we get a change in government I guess.
3
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 06 '26
That picture made me want an SVT40. An M14 would be sweet too. M1 Garand? Perfectly fine. Slightly newer M1 Garand? Weapon of mass assaults!
54
u/Fine-Mine-3281 Mar 06 '26
They’ll just give some incredibly stupid tag line like “but if it can save just one life by getting these assault weapons off the streets and out of the hands of sexist, misogynist, racists then isn’t it worth the 1000% bureaucratic mark-up???”
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

I honestly can’t stand that moronic line of thinking, explains why Canada is so bankrupt right now

The whole thing is political theatre. They don't give a shit about guns or crime.

30ish% or more of your full work day/labour (expressed as tax money) goes towards things like this...
3
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 06 '26
Does that mean I'm a government worker and can now collect my 30 days a year of paid vacation and 50 sick days and 100, 000 pension?

15
u/Valiturus Mar 06 '26
OP, you should post this to r/canada as well.
16
u/IAMURBUNKLE Mar 06 '26
This article is so poorly written. Author has no clue what they’re talking about - making it seem like 32k black rifles are sitting in a warehouse in Ottawa. Cost blowout is even more outrageous when you consider costs incurred to just create a website. Arrive Can App all over again but so much worse.
This article totally misses the mark.
6
u/CalibreMag Mar 06 '26
Alternatively, I think by not getting dragged into all the minutia we are all well aware of, it is more concise and paletable/understandable to the average Canadian for whom the only salient point is that they would rather see more police than this.
And anecdotally I think it's having that impact. I already got an invite to do a radio interview because of it.
14
u/thxxx1337 Mar 06 '26
These figures don't include the cost of consultants and third party companies. I promise you, the taxes spent is a lot higher than 800 million.
5
28
u/Joeyjackhammer Mar 06 '26
Could’ve given us $24,000 per gun and the program might actually go somewhere.
22
u/King-Conn Mar 06 '26
If it was 24,000 per gun, I would totally hand in a few so I could afford to move from this country lol

When the government spends 1 million or 1 billion dollars we really have a hard time understanding the impact of this. I want to show how crazy these numbers are.
For arugment sake I'll be conservative.
- Avg. Salary of a Canadian is 75k per year.
- Approx. 11k of that goes to the federal government in taxes.
- Assume avg working life of a Canadian is 40 years.
This means that when the government spends 1 million dollars that is equivalent of 2 Canadians working their entire lives to pay for that spending.
When the government spends 1 billion dollars that is equivalent to 2,272 people working their entire lives to pay for that item.
Yes I know the government is not fully funded by just Canadian workers tax dollars but it gives a sense on how crazy some of this spending really is.
So per gun we have taken ~5 years of taxes for 1 Canadian, again PER GUN. Make this make sense.

u/Noah_S_Schwartz Mar 06 '26
This is insane, especially when you think about community policing initiatives and violence interruption programs with a better track record of saving lives that are fighting tooth and nail just to get the funds to survive.

u/Eisenbahn-de-order Mar 06 '26
Oh no all the 300 ag42b in Canada will cause so much drive by shootings if we don't round them up and crush them!!! /S
And in the process we will shill out $24000 per gun! (Where $2 goes to the evil owner and $23998 goes to the brave mobile collectors and QC lobbyists just because)
5
5
u/Fuck_you_all22 Mar 07 '26
Lol. It costs $25,000 to collect and destroy a legally acquired private property and the fair market compensation for it is $2. Where did $24,998 go? Did it just vanish out of thin air? Poof....

I shared this on the canada sub and it got removed for "low content".

There is no Canada sub.... just a giant Liberal circle jerk mislabeled as rCanada.

Yeah this article is full of errors, they also state that about 30,000 guns have been “collected”, that’s just what has been declared, nothing has been collected yet.
2
u/greendoh Mar 06 '26
In fairness the RCMP has been issuing updates on the number declared (not collected) and it hasn't increased significantly from launch - and those launch numbers were almost exclusively gun stores that are trying to get paid for inventory that they can't sell and have been storing since the ban OICs went through.
Damned near nobody who owns guns is participating - some based on personal beliefs around government disarmament of the people, some based on property rights - but even if you don't swing that way you're not declaring based on the fact that if you declare you aren't guaranteed payment.
Long way of saying that number won't grow significantly, and it's doubtful they will 'return' that $ to the Federal pots if they don't use it (they'll end up spending the remainder on ad campaigns encouraging compliance).

National Post is so partisan, I don't really think that them posting an article about this is very meaningful. I'd also observe that this cuts both ways through the sunk cost fallacy; "this has already cost so much that we have to finish it". Easily knocked down argument of course, but this is not a rational debate.

Yeah, there are shades and complexities to that. NP just kinda steamrolls over all of them.

The picture consists of:
M1 Garand with aftermarket stock.
SVT38?
SVT40
correct me if I'm wrong
6
u/rastamasta45 Mar 06 '26
The top rifle is a Norinco M305, M14 clone.
Second rifle is a very rare Swiss AG42, super expensive ammo. No one is robbing liquor stores with that.
1
u/PM_me_ur_TT-33 Mar 07 '26
Swedish Ag42B, based on the charging handle knobs and secondary mag catch. I wouldn't call them "rare" even, but they're irreplaceable relics and have been obsolete most of their lives. Ammo isn't bad for a centenarian long action centerfire.

u/Massive_Expression_2 Mar 06 '26
Wow! Now the government is going to give me $24,000 for each gun? Time to buy more guns. /s
