First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

is the 2020 ban the start of a trend or an isolated incident? honestly feels like the end goal is complete ban of everything. am i crazy?

You’re not crazy for noticing a pattern. The 2020 prohibition wasn’t really an isolated incident it fits into a longer Liberal policy trajectory on civilian firearms that goes back decades. No seriously, go check the rock quote for it.

The firearms act started back in the 90s and before that the Liberals had already been pushing against legal firearms ownership.

They make it into a political issue to force the other side to support 'pro-gun' people. This way, they can rile up their base. US VS THEM is the strongest tool in a politician's armoury.

It's a long cornerstone for the Liberals, they'll keep hammering it, cutting away at it until there's nothing left, then they move the goal post to the next hot button topic they manufacture.

Their base eats it up either because they're ignorant or they're so team sports locked they just let it fly. Look at all the people in this very sub indicating that 'they aren't single issue voters' or 'i cant support the other guy!'.

There are only two things that can stand in the way of prohibitionists: constitutional protections, and a large base of gun owners who punish politicians for abusing them. Canada doesn't have constitutional protections, and has no reasonable prospect of acquiring them, but we do have a large base of millions of gun owners. So far it's been strong enough to significantly frustrate the government's efforts and inflict some political cost on them, but not strong enough to outright stop them.

The only political solution the average gun owner has is

A) To continue to be loud, and put pressure on their provincial (and federal opposition) politicians to stand against and impede the federal government, and

B) Vote for federal representatives that promise to reverse anti-gun policy. Right now, that's the CPC.

C) Do your part to keep the gun culture growing. Gun ownership is growing in Canada every year, and has been for a very long time. So get your friends and family into it, because the politicians will only give this up when it costs them too many votes.

Yep. We need to increase the number of PAL holders period. If 10 million Canadians had PALs the government would not be pushing for more gun control in Canada. Especially if a lot of those PAL holders lived in key urban areas.

Vote in a new government. Undo the current OICs and ideally unfreeze handguns.

Implement simplified classification.

It's that simple.
