First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Who gives a fuck? Country needs to constantly compare everything to the states. We’re absolutely pathetic

Liberals (boomers specifically) when every aspect of the canadian life is getting significantly worse but if you fudge the numbers (a lot) it could be interpreted to be doing still worse than the USA but not as bad as if you did a thought experiment and making USA perform as bad as they possibly could:

Its funny with you mentioning spiritual boomers, probably read my other comment saying my friend was one in spirit and yeah, hes fucking insulated from the economy going to shit. hes essentially got to do life on easy mode besides putting in, admittedly a bit of hard work in the beginning to get his position but from there on is essentially on easy mode. Rental property, job that you literally cannot lose in any sort of economic downturn, parents that work (may not have the riches but definitely middle class) and had been leaning more and more boomer liberal over the years as he fell into this comfort. Always got an excuse for the liberal failures, doesnt understand how difficult life is and that lots of people need to choose between bills and food.

Sorry for the rant but it ain't just the actual boomers thats the issue but the boomers in spirit too. Dont even know what the point of my comment here is other than an example of people who are protected from the economy can afford these stupid luxury beliefs.

It's always compare to the US. It's getting shittier and shittier here but it isn't the absolute shit show it is down there so it's OK!

It's funny that he wants to compare that one metric. But GDP, GDP per capita, then the US is irrelevant. They've seen 40% GDP growth in a decade. We've seen I believe 4% GDP growth OVER 10 YEARS! nevermind inflation was running hot for many of those years too. 

Canada's only means to increase GDP under the Liberals is immigration. This country is retarded.

Every single developed country is experiencing significant job losses. We're still doing better than the world's largest economy south of us.

I swear Gen Z's think we live in a bubble and every country is some separate closed economy insulated from the world. 🙄

Somehow it’s only convenient context that is offered.

Last month for food prices it was “climate change”. The comparison with US (who have much lower prices) did not come up.

Comparing to the U.S. only adds context if it actually explains what’s happening here. It doesn’t magically make the problem smaller. Saying we're doing better doesn't really mean jack shit.

Canada losing the most jobs in four years is still bad news for Canadians regardless of what the U.S. numbers look like. If anything, constantly pointing south is just a way to dodge the obvious question.

Why is our labour market weakening right now? Why is the government still pumping immigration and offering people full PR when our youth can't find work?

Economic benchmarking can be useful, but it’s not a substitute for accountability. Saying we’re doing better than the states doesn’t help the people who just lost their jobs, and it doesn’t explain whether the policies here are working or not. If Canada’s economy is strong, it should be able to stand on its own results not just look good relative to someone else having a worse month.

Nobody is claiming Canada exists in isolation. The point is that Canadians care about the Canadian economy first. If job losses here hit a four-year high, brushing it off with “well the U.S. is worse” is basically the economic version of “it could be worse,” which isn’t exactly reassuring. I get you feel the need to run defence and carry water for you guy but this is just sad.
