News / Politics / Activism Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Appointing Natalie Provost to lord over the program does nothing to address the core issues that plague this program.

Her theoretical appointment does not magically materialize all of the necessary logistical and resource assets needed to conduct the buyback.

What is she realistically going to do? Ban more guns? Yeah alright cool, we can’t even entice anyone to collect the ones that are banned right now and banning more is just going to further push the provinces away on this issue to the point where some of them may follow Alberta and Saskatchewan in actively blocking the federal government from doing anything. Not to mention it’ll just increase the scope of the program to the point where there will be too many guns to collect, we’re already there now.

Police forces in the buybacks flagship province are even dropping like flies. Pushing this shit even more will just see Quebec opt out all together and then this program is really dead. Quebec might agree with the program in spirit but even they only have so much tolerance for a program that’s disorganized, expensive and impractical.

The buyback has been through a bakers dozen public safety ministers and not one of them could get this up and running. All she really brings to the table is a tragic story, but even she has to operate within the confines of government bureaucracy.

The time to put her in charge was six years ago, before public opinion started to sour against the program.

Ah, but remember that 6 years ago (up through 4 years ago) Canada, alongside the rest of the world, was utterly consumed by mass hysteria over the uncommon cold. After 2022 the appetite for this was over; that's part of why C-21 only banned future guns (including the handguns). Their enemy could accept this; after all, win an election and it goes back to normal, right?

But after that, the LPC got greedy. Part of that was the second attempt to blame everyone else for mass shootings; then the LPC stole the election in '25, which completely destroyed the rest of the trust.

And then Tumblr Ridge, perpetrated by the LPC's pet demographic [whether you call her a woman is irrelevant].

The time to put her in charge was six years ago, before public opinion started to sour against the program.

The only things they could ever realistically get were the AR-15s and the registered M1s (and force everything else into hiding). Poly was reckless to provoke this and has become a liability for the LPC; it was a nucleation point for the people to question Federal legitimacy (which is itself in short supply these days). I expect them to double down on what they can get; though whether or not they actively pursue nullified registration certificates is anyone's guess- legally speaking, they shouldn't be able to know.

Agree with everything else you said but I wanna talk about your last lije there where you said legally speaking. Legally speaking? The Canadian government since day 1 is built on "legally speaking no, but ill do it and then make a law after letting me do it again" or "legally speaking idgaf, what are you gonna do? ".

Whos going to oppose them? The military? Yeah okay. RCMP? You mean the FEDERAL police ? Supreme Court? With what armed power do they have ? The provinces? They might try but you can just economically strangle them .

I dont wanna hear anyone say "uh but the government cant do this or that! Or we opposed them on this and they relented (and then immediately did it aftwards)! ☝️🤓

Schizo rant over.
