I would assume they would deem it a variant of an AR15 and ban it on looks. They banned the GSG16 the same way even though it doesn’t share any parts with an MP5, looks scary, banned.
This is why simplified classification needs to be implemented, the laws surrounding these bans would win Olympic gold in a metal gymnastics competition.

They banned the GSG16 the same way even though it doesn’t share any parts with an MP5, looks scary, banned.
This is factually incorrect. The GSG16 was explicitly stated by the RCMP to be a standalone firearm that is NOT a MP5 variant. The one that got banned as a MP5 variant was the earlier GSG-5. If you look at the OIC for the GSG-16, it's actually its own firearm.
The GSG-15, however, is banned as a variant of the FN SCAR, by the 2024 OIC.

Yes that sounds about right actually, isn’t the GSG5 the exact same firearm in terms of bolt design etc though? I thought they just changed the furniture due to a lawsuit? If that’s the case the picking and choosing makes even less sense. Correct me if I’m wrong there though

Yeah the GSG-5 and GSG-16 are identical internally. GSG changed the appearance after HK sued them for likeness infringement.
My guess is that Canadian authorities thinks this level of Likeness (close enough to piss HK off) counts as a "variant".

$6000 NZ. Saw an ad online. So it may retail for $5000CAD+. Ouch. Guess I'll wait for the Derya 9mm straight pull.

u/Purple-Character8206 Feb 27 '26
Yeah, ouch. I didn't look into the price!

Would have to be either literally made of gold or shipped with 4000 9mm rounds for me to even consider buying this lmfao.

$5,000+ Nein, Nyet, no way.
Im not a fan of Turkish guns but the Dydra line is getting a pump, lever, and bolt action 9mm and Im sure they'll be priced nicer for range toys

I have no turkish guns yet, but I will soon. I don't get the irrational hatred for them - they're supporting our hobby. Actively supporting it, designing custom products specifically for our market. Who else can claim that? And others like Norinco get slobbered all over despite the fact that they're objectively shit, and are produced by a semi-hostile government owned company. And let's face it - the americans and even our own folks have produced craptastic guns (look at the past decade of Remington products, for example, or a lot of cooey stuff, or when Winchester took their QA nose dives before they started getting their stuff made in Japan). And let's not forget Rossi - their QA can vary wildly.
I've got my eye on one of those morrisson 12" lever guns. I handled a couple at the gun store, and I fail to see any of the fabled 'poor fit and finish' - they were actually all very good overall, even above average when compared to pre-Ruger levers, or the Brazilian guns. I think I might grab it and get some first hand experience. My opinion might change, but right now, I have a relatively high opinion of the Turkish makers.

Turkish-designed guns are legitimately really good.
The TM22 is what the 10/22 should have been from the start, the bullpup shotguns are basically an HK CAWS you can/could actually buy (and bullpup mag-fed shotguns legitimately do make sense in ways you don't necessarily think of at first, especially when hunting), and now they're finally figuring out how to 9mm in a way that isn't just an MP5 clone.
I don't get the irrational hatred for them
It's mostly that you're your own QC department, but then again, laughs in WK-180C...

I have an Auslof (Turkish made shotgun) it had issues within 2 boxes of shells.. did I complain? Nah, just emailed the company and sent it in for repair
The problem is that people expect it to be perfect when its made cheaply

Already approved as NR and coming soon, according to a stocking business.

It’s a shame what has become the norm for guns here. The new guns coming out all seem to be as bizarre as Justin.

Already has Nr FRT and one of the distributors is going to import it this year.

Apparently, in New Zealand a similar rifle is around $4k Canadian. If it's near that in Canada, it may be a hard sell. I couldn't justify for myself. Others may be able to. At that point I'll grab a nice 357 Lever.

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Feb 27 '26
Just asked my BFL friend to check it out for me and you are right!
FRT# 200233, non-restricted with a 12.5 inch barrel lol

I believe it's an AR platform still so would be prohib. Hell, a lot of European nations now have better and more sensible gun laws than we do.
I believe Derya has a 9mm pump that we end up seeing here though, as I don't think it's AR based
1
u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Feb 27 '26
No that was their previous attempt. This one is proprietary so non-restricted.

u/Late_Winner6859 Feb 27 '26
Even in totalitarian Russia you can get both AR and AK-based rifles, and even 50 BMGs.
IPSC handguns are technically owned by the ranges and have to be stored there, but at least you can get into the sport and practice.

Manufacturers are getting desperate to stay in a Canadian market that’s being destroyed by our own government.
2
u/Motor_Historian2634 Feb 28 '26
They should make a proprietary magazine for it and make 75 rd drums

u/chillyrabbit Feb 27 '26
I wonder if it truly would be legal. Schmeisser also makes a straight pull 223 (SP15) and a straight pull 9mm (SP9). But both those firearms would be classified as AR15's, because of the upper/lower compatibility with a standard AR15.
It doesn't have the normal buffer tube, like an AR but it might be like the MCX if the upper fits on a standard ar15 lower it would still be considered an AR variant and prohibited.
1
u/Quirky-Delivery-3236 Feb 28 '26
Well it’s literally designed for the Canadian market so idk how it wouldn’t be legal if it’s not legal here they just won’t make it.

She means Canada :-/
