Meet up Throwback Thursday: Student Range Day shot on film!

Why can't this be the Canada everybody wants ? I'm sure most people aren't comfortable around firearms simply because nobody has ever taught them safety and how to properly operate one. Education is key in my opinion.

I'd love to hear from the people that participated and if their opinion was changed a little !

We do collect feedback from our participants. A couple common responses include:

It helped them to put the difficulty of opereating a firearm (especially handguns!!!) in context. Movies and games made it look easy.

It's cool to be able to shoot a piece of history. We routinely offer Garands, Lee-Enfields, Mosins, and other World War classics.

Many of our participants are international students from countries that prohibit civilian ownership, and there are little to no opportunities to try out any firearms in their home country outside of .22LR, so they value this experience.

It's just plain ol' fun!

Some of the feedbacks are valid criticisms and we've addressed them. For example:

Having 1 static firing line at 10yd is pointless for scoped rifles. To address this, our friends at the Eastern Ontario Shooting Club was kind enough to let us rent two 50yd bays at once starting from 2025. Now, one bay is used for 10yd (handguns, red dot/iron sight rifles, shotguns shooting clays on the berm) shooting activities, while the other bay is for scoped rifles and some surplus rifles at 50yd.

Having students to load ammo into the mags can often take too long. Every event now feature a dedicated group of volunteers that load magazines and clips and deliver them to the firing line. They ensure there will always be at least a couple loaded mags at the line ready to go for every firearm. This greatly improved the flow throughout the day since we've implemented this policy in 2022.

Having an Excel list of firearms can be too confusing and hard to read. We now post a series of graphics of every single firearm featured at the event, their calibre, capacity, and a brief description. It cut down the confusion among our participants, and it also helps our staff as they can quickly point to the graphic and answer various questions. Here's a sample of our graphic from an earlier, better time.

And finally, the most recent complaint is the significant drop in firearm variety where a large amount of centre-fire semi-automatic rifles are no longer offered. Unfortunately none of us have a prohibited class BFL so there's nothing we can do about it...

Roughly 1 stop, give or take. These are mostly shot at 1/500 or 1/1000s between f/4 and f/8.

Super cool. I think more high schools and universities should offer programs like this, especially in rural areas and teach safe firearms use. Maybe there is a way to incorporate the CFSC into it too if it's not already

Whenever we can get hold of an instructor with a free time slot (getting rarer and rarer these days!) we would work with them to organize a CFSC session exclusively for our students.

Since we are a not-for-profit school club, all excess revenues are handed out at the end of each year to student CFSC participants as a rebate. We've since sponsored dozens of PALs over the years!

Anyone know what adapter that is for the 597 mags on the second 1022?

It's a custom 3D printed chassis for the 10/22 with an integral 597 magwell. No adaptors needed. You know how some bolt action chassis turns them into AICS-compatible? This is the same idea.

Yes, that's why only 5 rounds go in and they have to load the next 5 with an half-empty clip.
