Shipping Handguns

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone’s had experience with a similar situation to mine and can share some info. I called the CFO and he said to ask the guys at the CFP, after calling them they said it’s a CFO issue and now I can’t get through to the CFO again so I figured in the meantime I’d ask here. I’m from Ontario, I have a handgun registered to an address here but I recently got a job in Calgary starting in March. I don’t have a solid address there yet and would be doing some apartment hunting when I get there. Right now it looks like I’d be getting an Airbnb for about a month till I find something more solid. I plan on shipping my guns to myself through Canada post and driving through the states as I have some business to conduct in Montana on the way. My question is whether I need separate ATTs to go to the post office and then to my temporary address or if I can get an ATT to the new address then just send it through Canada post? Any help or advice is welcome, thanks in advance.

There is a process with the ATF to travel with your guns while traversing the states. No prohibs though.

You'd be pushing it to get the form 6 (iirc) approved in time for a March move though. It is possible though

Yeah that’s why I’m aiming to ship them to my Alberta address so I don’t have to deal with import/export

Yeah i dont blame you. Shipping is easy to do once you get the ATT side figured out. Enjoy Alberta its a sweet provience!

You do NOT require a form 6 NIA to traverse the USA with firearms as a Canadian. Form 6 NIA is for hunting or sporting purposes not for travel.

Source: download the form 6 NIA and look at the Q/A section #16 and it outlines this exact scenario not requiring a form 6 NIA.

Getting it back into Canada is difficult now. You need a form from Foreign Affairs.

You do not. That stopped 2 years ago.

Source: Entered Canada with firearms recently.

It's not a firearm that is the issue, it's a handgun. Bit the last time I looked into it was about 2 years ago, so maybe I'm outdated.

Handguns are firearms. Import to Canada is based on its classification. For a restricted handgun the is already registered in Canada you need to declare it at the border. Has your PAL, paper slip and ATT. That's it.
