To those who doubt my sawed-offs can hit anything beyond arms reach (legal)

Legal reminder:

- barrel can’t be cut below 18” (18.5” semi-auto)

- OAL can’t be cut below 26”

A common theme amongst the comments in a lot of the posts I make of my SBS’s is that they’re allegedly useless at hitting anything beyond arms reach.

Well, today we bust that myth. This was the first day shooting it after I sawed-off my first shotgun (before I finished shaping the grip as you can tell by the square nub instead of a nice rounded grip).

Anyways my friends, this isn’t a passive-aggressive rebuttal to those who consistently say SBS’s are useless. This is a debunking video for an age old myth that SBS’s have zero range. Perhaps they aren’t bird guns anymore but they can still hit the mark! Rock on and keep having fun everyone until brighter times are among us!

PS: this shotgun is featured in other posts with a measuring tape to show it meets the length requirements.

For some reason people have a really hard time believing that barrel length alone actually has very little impact on the maximum spread of pellets (and, for single projectiles, accuracy). Video game logic, I guess. By far the biggest effects on spread are from choke constriction, pellet size, and wad design.

The biggest advantages barrel length is giving you on a shotgun is more a longer sight picture and more length to hang a magazine tube under, maybe some weight to help with recoil.

So if your shooting skeet, that long barrel helps a lot with your bead sight and swing.

But for buck shot groups, the actual shape inside the barrel and the quality of the ammo are going to have the biggest effect on how well the gun groups ober distance. That's why the Vang comp machining or the flite control ammo have better results over distance than chokes or longer barrels, reforming the projectiles will cause more flyers and more spread

Yup ☝️

18’’ of barrel isn’t so bad for accuracy. an actual sawed off with like 10’’ or less could really suffer from low accuracy tho

I have an s-tac shotgun and I think it has an 11 or 12 inch barrel and it definitely lacks in accuracy... its not a surgical instrument.. its a sledgehammer at close enage.

That’s the theory, however, I have an ss211 with a 9.75” barrel and it patterns roughly the same, especially if I go up a couple chokes

I get 3" groups at 100 yards with my 20 gauge Mossberg shockwave. People on here play too many video games lol, they think shotguns are just 25 yard guns but their SKS is a 300 yard DMR lol.

That’s exactly right, too many people correlate game performance with irl performance. No one would suspect your impressive pioneering of black powder gasser snake shot would be as effective against rabbits as it is but surely people have tried to say otherwise.

Yeah people have too many opinions on gun ballistics without trying it themselves and investigating basic ballistics. So many people. Miss deer high with 30-30 because they think it drops like 4 feet at 100 yards.

Unironically my 30-30’s iron sights are damaged, so until they’re fixed I do have to aim pretty high haha. But in all seriousness, there’s lots of ballistics misconceptions out there that seem to be continually perpetuated. It’s great to see someone else testing out these things for themself (in your case, black powder gasser rounds) to come to their own conclusions

Using what ammo and which choke?

Lol yeah I'm calling BS if he's claiming 3" groups at 100 with a 14" cylinder bore shockwave. Most SKS won't manage that 🙄

u/Vintage_Pieces_10 Feb 09 '26

BS or not, hicock45 did hit his steel gong with nothing more than the shockwave iron sights. With practice (and I mean, more than it’s probably worth), I’d say it’s doable

I can do it with a bead sight in my 12.5in Churchill SxS. Just have to feel it out first.

Wanna see the picture? DM me. Also no SKS will manage that because SKSs are innacurate pieces of shit. They're 4moa at best, usually 5-7. You're not dropping a deer at 200 yards with an SKS like you can with some rifled shotguns.

No choke. 2 ¾" 20 gauge challenger slugs. 14" smooth bore barrel. I got the same with 12 gauge challenger slugs out of a beneli nova with an IC choke

they can hit EVERYTHING

how are they with moving targets at 40 yards?

That’s next on the list ;). However, I did hit some bottles out of the sky that we tossed full of water on a friend’s farm with a shockwave. But with the actual home job sawed off, yet to try it

What that a slug?

I’m sure you can have a few pellets strike a plate. I think the real test is to shoot a large paper, butcher paper, cardboard box etc so we can see the spread. If that’s a target load and and shows a nice dense pattern or if it’s buckshot and all 9 pellets are in a 12 inch circle, I’ll agree it’s completely usable for something other than fun.

Otherwise, it’s your gun, do as you wish and have fun.

The pattern is pretty wide granted (that’s actually a canvas I’m shooting at. It was for an art project, if I dig up the canvas I’ll send that too to show)

Otherwise, below linked will be a video of buck and slugs from basically point blank. Again, while it is only a few feet, the buck patterns pretty good. And even at 10-15 yards (which I’ll have to show in another video) the buckshot is actually pretty decently grouped

I see it this way

Folks sell the 18 inch Maverick 88 all the time. It's one of the most recommended guns on this subreddit after the sks and 10/22.

That's an 18 inch cylinder bore shotgun

So are your shorties. 18 inches and cylinder bore. Same thing, just no stock.

Also.... having shot a 14 inch shotgun with removable Chokes... you can be very accurate with  a full choke.

It's not that they can't hit anything. It's just that the costs outweigh the benefit with this kind of platform.

Cost = less controllable (poor handling characteristics), worse recoil (lighter with no support), and a worse sight picture (takes longer to aquire and isn't consistent).

Benefit = shorter overall package? Looks neat... maybe?

Personally, I choose function over looks. And the length reduction isn't enough to make it a real benefit considering what is lost. Having a stock just makes it more functional and easier to use.

Shooting clays with my buddy and my stock came loose. Forgot my Allen keys at home. I had no trouble hitting clays with a 14" barrel. Don't know why anyone would say an 18" barrel can't hit anything.

Go shoot trap or difficult targets and you will see the difference between barrel lengths. Trap and skeet use 28-32" barrels because it is an advantage.

There is also a big difference between hitting something and hitting it with force. You can dust a plate with pellets and it won't even fall over. That's not useful or practical.

1

u/Superb_Extension1751 Feb 09 '26

Oh absolutely. My shotgun has a 32" barrel and has got me many geese. But 18" is still useful within its range. Not going to turn it into a COD shotgun that only shoots 10 yards.

You can probably hit it, doesn't mean you'll down it
