Used to buy it for $8.99/box back in 2015, so id say that's a good price Op

10 years and it only inflated a dollar? Not bad
SKS tripled in price in the past 10 years. Welp

Nah, you found a LGS that doesn't know what they have, which does happen sometimes; Back before the pistol ban, I walked into a gun store and saw they had a Smith and Wesson Model 29 with a 83/8" barrel for $600 ... I kept my mouth shut, haggled the price down and walked out with a big shit eating grin on my face.

Even by 2021 I still got three fairly decent SKS for 180$ each, traded one for 1000 round of green tip federal 5.56

Damn, get as much as you can at that price. Cheap non-corrosive is hard to get anymore
Its made in Russia so what's here is all there is. A few stores get MFS ammo but not in any real quantity

My lgs had MFS last time I was there. I only bought 2 boxes. He wants $20 a box. Buck a round for 7.62? Nah.

I have not had luck with MFS. I tried a box through my CZ600 and it was about as accurate as Norinco red box (3.5 MOA) but was more expensive. Also in that one box I ended up with a dud.

I bet after the war ends the price of 7.62 Soviet is gonna crater with all that surplus able to hit the market

That’s a great deal, I would have bought them out. Won’t find it for the price anywhere again, supply is running low

pre covid you could usually negotiate bulks deals second hand on the stuff for as low as $5 a box. or $8 for the 54r barnaul

u/Less_Ad_6609 Feb 06 '26
Worked at Canadian tire back in 2012, stuff was 7.99 a box, sks were 179.99, those were the days.

Yup great price, Barnaul is non corrosive steel jacket and I’ve shot a ton of the 5.56 with zero issues. Barnaul is considered to be some of the best quality Russian ammo.

wonder if it will ever make its way here again if the war finishes. or hell ukraine might become a big ammo exporter as im sure their arms industry is fairly tooled up now

I’m hoping Russian imports will start up again, I want a couple Baikal rifles but they’re currently not importing anything. Ukraine is already exporting some 7.62x39, it’s cheap and pretty decent quality.

It's great ammo but unfortunately the shells cannot be reloaded. A few years ago I bought a box of 500 that was the equivalent of approximately 6$ per box of 20. Don't think I'll ever find them at that price again...

I like the green shells. Used a ton in 556 and 762. Never had one not go bang yet....

My favourite & yes that price is more than fair given how hard to find it is. That’s the pre-Ukraine price

I ran these through my Kodiak WK180 and they were absolute hot garbage. To be fair, that entire rifle was hot garbage, so it was a match made in heaven.
Interestingly enough, it actually ate Norinco rounds a little better. Apparently, it has a taste for the cheap stuff.
My WK180 rattled more than maracas 🪇

For FMJ? Not really. That would be a good price if it was some sort of hunting round like soft point.

SKS are 3-5 moa rifles anyway lmao, still better than corrosive Chinese ammo

I’m calling bullshit on your MOA claim
This was my ruger ranch gen 1 sight in at 100 yards with barnaul, the middle was dialed in

Pretty solid yep, it's a slowly dwindling supply of pretty decent ammo. Prior to it being sanctioned I remember buying it for that, or even $12 a box. Not even sure what it's at now normally from retailers where it's findable, probably getting closer to a dollar a round.
