Cabelas decided to slam every price gougers on their face
Price of sks after the Dec 6 was up for 200, and Cabelas decided to keep their price and offering a discount now

u/BowFella Dec 21 '24
You gotta be a real POS to sell your SKS for $1K lol
27
u/Zephorith Dec 21 '24 edited Dec 23 '24
One of my buddies gouges. He just sold two SKSs for $1900. I like the guy, but when he brags about that shit, I really lose respect for him.

u/BowFella Dec 21 '24
Tell the RCMP where he hides his Raven.
I kid I kid. That's too cruel. Give em his GSG-16 or something.

One guy offered to trade me his SKS for my XBox One lol.
I didn't take the offer, but $1k for an SKS is ridiculous.

More like they're trying to get rid of them all before they get banned.
13
u/ChompyDompy Dec 21 '24
Kinda like how the Ruger PCC's kept getting cheaper over the last five months. Maybe just a coincidence.

1
u/Chaos-Hydra Dec 21 '24
Dumb question here, i thought gov would buy back if it gets banned?
9
u/icebalm on Dec 21 '24
- They can't buy them back because they didn't sell them in the first place.
- This government says a lot of things. How many firearms have they compensated people for?

Right about 10 years ago Russians SKS were 350 and Chinese ones were 250 ...
About 5 years ago RU were 450 and CN were 350
And now here we are today ...
Funny how much things can change in 10 years
56
u/JoeTheMailman Dec 21 '24
Man I still remember the Golden Age when we could get SKS at Cabelas for 199$ during sales
28
u/Smiley119 Artillery Only Dec 21 '24
And for a 100 bucks more you'd get a whole spam can of ammo ...or is my memory failing me?
15
u/JoeTheMailman Dec 21 '24
279$ for the spam cans lol 1000 rounds. But only during sales haha
1
u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA C. Sharps .45-70 Dec 21 '24
I remember $300 for 1200-something rounds of that Czech stuff in the green paper boxes on stripper clips, those were the days.

2
u/theluckyllama Dec 21 '24
Oh man, that ammo had a smell to it ya know?
2
u/masterscoonar Dec 21 '24
It still does! Just caught a whiff of chinese factory air from 1977 a few days ago.

Dec 21 '24
I picked up a heavily refurbished but serviceable Chinese SKS from Cabela's during Covid for $149. Not an attractive example of the rifle type but shoots just fine!
Sub $500 for an unissued SKS is still a steal in my opinion though.
1
u/Iokua_CDN Dec 22 '24
Honestly, Cabelas would sell used sks rifles that must have been traded in to their gun library. They would be great prices for them, way cheaper than a "New" one
1
u/Iokua_CDN Dec 22 '24
I consider myself lucky...  Russian sks for 225 in 2020... I think it was a used trade in to their gun library. Which meant no cleaning cosmoline.
I almost didn't get it, being a young poor gun owner, but my father in law really emphasized that it was a really really good deal. I'm so happy I listened, that old gun is still one of my favourites to shoot

That's what really brought my wife around to my hording. She's a PAL holder, owns a really glitzy lightweight 6.5 creed boltgun, but was hating on my collection random fun guns until I showed her how my new shotgun was 35-50% more on GP than I just bought it for. Ain't nothing making those one day gains other than scamming people on used cars or crypto fraud.

But I *could* sell if we went broke or something. That's all she needs to know lol
7
u/BiZzles14 Dec 21 '24
6 months to a year from now and I could very much see their price dipping back down again, at 500-600 they're still the go to "cheap centerfire semi", but once there's more options back on the market old surplus like these are likely to drop
(Or maybe I'm just coping about the fact I didn't buy one a few years ago and regret it with the prices nowadays...)

u/Tigolelittybitty Dec 21 '24
10 years? I bought a Chinese from bullseye the day of the 2019 OIC for 220

3
u/outline8668 Dec 21 '24
When I got mine $200 got you a crate of ammo and a free Chinese SKS or $50 to upgrade to a Russian. That would have been mid-late 2000s.
1
1
u/Reliable-Narrator Dec 21 '24
I think they were even cheaper than that 10 years ago. Its about when I got my PAL and I remember them around $180.
1
u/Dummy_Wire Dec 21 '24
I bought my Chinese SKS in March 2020, right when I got my PAL and the lockdown started. $250 at Cabelaâs. I remember being pissed that my PAL didnât come in until the new year, because they had them for $189.99 for Black Friday 2019.

5 years ago I bought a Chinese SKS for $200 at Cabelas. Sold it for $425 a few months ago on my local storeâs consignment rack. Honestly, Iâm just happy that thing is gone so I have room for a real gun in my safe. Used the store credit toward a used Citori 625 :P

u/Wisecraker Dec 21 '24
And 10% off gift cards this weekend in store. You can use them right away. Got a Ruger American Ranch 5.56 for 700ish after tax

I just did lol. Figured since my T81 is now banned, I could convert the sks to use AK mags or something. I've got a 51 Tula that's all matching and mint that I don't want to hurt đ

Paid $189 on black friday for my Russian Tula, was probably about 8 years ago. We didn't know how good we had it. Should have got an SVT and a pallet of ammo too.

Just bought one, it's a mint French tickler!
1
u/strokedout Dec 21 '24
Nice! Did you pick up from their store?
3
u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
Yes, the staff asked me which serial number I would like. He said they have 18X, 23X, 24X numbers
1
u/CarlotheNord Dec 21 '24
Did you go in person? I'd prefer them to ship it to me since it's a 6 hour drive to my nearest shop.
1
u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
Yeah I did go in person, I got cooked by a rusty sks from an online sale as my first gun shopping experience... Buying in-person has this particular meaning for me

Can anyone confirm if their whole stock of french ticklers are actually unissued? I live 3 hours from the closest Cabelas and would rather order online.

u/The_red_rabbit_ii Dec 21 '24
Barrie Cabela's currently has 24 Million Series with Plastic Handguard. The finish was a bit rough. Just there on Monday.

u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
I'm buying now and the clerk said they have both kinds in stock!

Iâm placing an order now and will call and confirm Iâll be getting a french tickler. Thanks.

I wanna grab my first sks, anything I should know when talking to the clerk? Should I ask for a specific serial series?

Most clerks are quite informative, at least on sks. You can ask them before buying

noob question
Is there one SKS thats more desirable than another?
1
u/Careful_Professor_19 Jan 29 '25
To some people yes. But what is more desired changes based on the person.

Bought a 1301 Mod 2 a month ago from them. $1699! LGS has them for $2100, GP scalpers want $2100-$2500 for a used second gen lol. Cabelas can get silly sometimes. I ain't complaining but why offer a brand new version of a super popular gun for 25% off right when it comes out?

1
u/GodsGiftToWrenching Dec 22 '24
Ah shit, looks like I'm about to check both my neighboring cities cabelas for a French tickler now, 5 skses isn't too many eh?

u/AngryToasterOven97 Dec 22 '24
i panic bought so it was over 6 after tax. had no idea how long canada post was going to be on strike and wanted to own and shoot an sks before a potential feb ban. definitely dont regret it and i think things are headed for better than worse rn

Dec 21 '24
Sorry I just got my pal and had a couple questions on these. I heard you really have to clean these when you get these do something called Cosmoline. Is this something I whould be a able to do at the range? I will be getting a membership at a range and bassicly storing my firearms there?
The videos I saw of the cleaning have them soak the parts in mineral baths? Even on cabelas site it says it will need thoroughly cleaning.
Is there a site I could buy one which is already clean? Also anything else I should look for before buying one of these?
4
u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
it's not that easy to do at the range. What I will do is fill a spray bottle with mineral spirit, spray on every parts and mop it dry, followed by a mop of clp or light gun oil.
It's the best way for you to learn about your rifle so you shouldn't skip it
2
Dec 21 '24
Yea I think that's my biggest issue before buying I don't where I would clean it. I live in a pretty busy area and people don't like guns in my house anyway. I don't want people freaking out that I'm taking apart and cleaning a gun. So i think it would be better at the range. I think I'll try calling them in the morning and ask. Thanks for the idea about the spray bottle.
7
u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
mineral spirit is super volatile and make sure you do in a ventilated place
1
u/b_tan Dec 21 '24
Find a bucket. Disassemble the gun in your room then dump every parts except the barrel in there. Take the bucket to your backyard, or anywhere with good ventilation, clean them with mineral spirit. There is no cosmline in your barrel, I assume, so you can wipe excessive grease out side of your barrel and clean the barrel in your room.
Make sure firepin is moving after the cleaning.
3
u/BorealMareothery Dec 21 '24
The cleaning is not that hard, and a good opportunity to learn how it comes apart! I soaked all of my parts in gasoline which dissolved all the cosmoline, then wiped it all down with gun oil. You should clean and store it at home.

They are accurate in terms of hitting gongs down the range. As long as they yeet things they good
1
u/Iokua_CDN Dec 22 '24
My Russian one is rough, but it hits metal plates Free hand at 100 meters no problem. That's good enough for me with iron sights
9
Dec 21 '24
I bought a Chinese one from Cabela's and could reliably hit dead center at 100yds if I took my time so yes.
Make sure the barrel rifling is good and you cleaned and put everything tightly back together after cleaning.
Only downside is they are easy to accidentally drop over a deep lake like I did with mine.
-2
u/DistinguishedBadger Dec 21 '24
Is there any functionality/reliability issues with this version of the Sks ? Ya know, being Chinese and all..? I was gonna get one, but im leaning more towards the Russian version
15
u/Mass_Spectrometer Dec 21 '24
Chinese mlitary guns typically have very good reputation. They are built to shoot even after nuke wars

Whatâs the general consensus on whatâs going to happen after the election? Are they worth picking up now or is the RCMP knocking on your door in October?
4
u/ChompyDompy Dec 21 '24
The only knock on your door you are going to get in October is some Liberal or NDP candidate spurting lies and begging for your vote. You can tell them to fuck off. If LE is knocking you can tell them to come back with a warrant.
2
u/WelcomeToTheHiccups Dec 21 '24
Ok fair, but Iâm seriously asking about whatâs going to happen with the ban.
