Gun and gear reviews NR Makasi Updated - loads of initial issues
Hey All,
As promised, I am here to report back after I took the NR Makasi to the range.
I took out 500 rounds to the range and only managed to get through 80. Here is what happened:
Constant failures to feed. I used the supplied 5 Rd PMag, 10 Rd DuraMags and Crossmags. The issue seems to be the magwell and/or the bolt. This did not totally surprise me as I had issues feeding snap caps when I was dry firing at home.
The charging handle often gets stuck and it is difficult to charge the rifle with the bolt forward and a magazine inserted. It loosened up throughout the day but you gotta put a lot of strength into it.
I checked and was on the unsuppressed gas setting. I still ended up taking the hand guard off and switch to the suppressed setting. Of course that did nothing but I wanted to try everything.
I was able to occasionally chamber the next round by manually charging the rifle BUT that only worked about half the time with the bolt not picking up the subsequent round.
As we all know, the dust cover opens up for some reason. This leads to it not opening fully when an optic is above it. I removed my optics and still had the same issues.
Weird enough I did manage to get through ONE 10 Rd DuraMag. That happened towards the end of the range session and surprised me. But it didn't last and the same issues persisted.
The folding stock is difficult to fold. You can get it with enough strength but you will feel like you are breaking the rifle.
A guy on the gunnutz forum just posted his experience and it mirrors mine. So it unfortunately seems like these are persistent issues.
Overall I am pretty disappointed. My WK 181 was more reliable out of the box. I am going back to the range tomorrow and will attempt to get through to 500 rounds to see if anything changes.
Pray for my arm strength cause I'm gonna be rocking that charging handle all day.

Whelp. Let's pray the Supreme Court challenge goes well and we get to own actual good guns that aren't steaming garbage lol

Mine arrives this week. I’ll get a video out ASAP for you guys.

u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
Appreciate you! My range is a bit weird with videos. I can only get videos when I go out to crown land.

u/Oetter83 5d ago
Awesome, much appreciated I got in on the FDE Makasi pre-order and I’ve been second guessing it a lot since I have Carmel as well

Where did you order from?

u/Panjaab1 5d ago
Fuck man. I missed the Bren era. This is mad disappointing as I was really looking forward to this.
Do you have any videos you feel comfortable sharing?
18
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
I can take one tomorrow if the range has no issues. Otherwise you will need to wait until I can get to crown land again, sorry dude!

canadian gun owner fell for it again award 🎖️

u/bosnanic 5d ago
Brigade Manufacturing is a small manufacturer that got flooded with orders by Canadian retailers. I can't image how much bad tooling and blind qc passes are coming out of thier shop just to get the guns out and cash in on the Canadian market while demand is still high.

u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
Idk if anyone expected any different. This gun will hopefully get fixed during the warranty process and I'll have a semi centre fire again🤞
Or it will somehow start working tomorrow.

people paid $2.3k before tax for a gun they expected not to work for even 100 rds?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's no reason to gamble on shit like this when the SKS exists
3
u/olongjohnson25 5d ago
Yeah imma let these guys figure out the issues and pick up a used one for 50-60% of the msrp. If they dont go down in price, who cares- bet they will tho!

As I've said before, I trust a state backed arms manufacturer with decades of experience over a few guys with a CNC in a garage. Glad I didn't get this one (hopefully the other one actually arrives).

u/marston82 4d ago
I don't think most of the Canadian gun owners here understand the importance of proven high level firearms manufacturing history is when picking between different companies. I recall one post had multiple people saying the Carmel looks ugly and like a fish so therefore they want the Makasi. Canadian gun owners are some of the most naive people around, you can spot it immediately by just reading some of the comments on here.
5
u/MostEnergeticSloth 4d ago
Low-key the same people saying it's ugly and heavy are probably the same ones who shit-kitted an alcor up, or put a full stock and magwell setup on an SKS. Then they also talk about wanting a reliable "SHTF" gun.

u/rastamasta45 5d ago
Ugghh I’m sad to hear because it’s just insane how much the Canadian market gets screwed over, a reliable semi 223 is just a unicorn at this point.
Glad I cancelled my pre-order. I honestly feared that QC would just completely drop when you have a very small company now taking 4,000 plus orders working on a strict timeline.
Shame 🤦🏽

Praying for you, representing the retailers. How many of these are you on the hook for?

u/LumberjackCDN Gold'n Loan Outfitters & Pawn 5d ago
We're smaller so we are cautious with things like this. Luckily our MK15 preoder is all sold out. We stopped doing preorders on the Carmel after 2 though cause north sylva's timing is unreliable for us as well due to not being a big enough fish. So hopefully theyre actually quality.

u/dannysmackdown 5d ago
Sorry to hear, that sucks. This is why I decided on the Carmel.
14
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
Eh, it is what it is. I knew we would be beta testing these rifles.
I am hoping that break in process resolves these issues. If not then I will send the rifle in for warranty.

u/KidWeaboo 5d ago
Hasn't this rifle been out for a while in the US? Is it too much to ask for a fully working gun for 2k?
6
u/MostEnergeticSloth 5d ago
Apparently it's not too much to ask of some people lmao. A fool and their money are soon parted.
1
2
u/dannysmackdown 5d ago
For sure. We have so little options nowadays. Best of luck man, either way with some patience and elbow grease I think you'll be left with a nice rifle.
1
u/SixEyeSassquatch 5d ago
Do you dismantle and clean factory grease before firing? Im curious how many people shoot guns straight from the box.
2
27
u/CallousDisregard13 5d ago
I got into an argument with a handful of people in here about how this gun was a 2k pos based on the thorough review on CGN.
Just wanted to say to those people...i fuckin toad a so. Sorry you spent good money on another crappy rifle OP
10
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
Honestly I am pretty sure that I will get this rifle working. Either between my work or the warranty process.
But yes, you are right. I do not recommend newer gun owners get the makasi due to all the tinkering that will be required.
6
u/Imaginary-Text4690 5d ago
Don’t recommend to anyone. A gun that expensive with that much tinkering is a no go. How long until your “tinkering” undoes itself and now you’re fucked. Maybe if warranty fixes it but that just sucks so bad for a brand new 2k gun

u/SirKickBan 5d ago
Out of curiosity, did you check to see if the magazine had any vertical wiggle after it was seated, by pushing up on the bottom? Your issue almost sounds like the magazine catch isn't holding the magazine as high as it ought to, which you should be able to test for.
5
u/macmuaythai 5d ago
Seemed previously all the issues were cosmetic but performance was good. Hoping this is just a lemon and the rest are okay

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 5d ago
So.... Carmel to the rescue

u/guestpassonly 5d ago
my guess is that its gonna be the same boat
2
u/TescoValueSoup 5d ago
Carmel has documented (though not widespread - possibly due to low adoption rate) cases of FTF, FTE, pinching brass.
1
u/Buckisop 4d ago
Lol, seems like you are biased against the Carmel even when I posted about it. Everyone's carmel somehow runs perfectly with no issues, no break in period out of box.

u/MostEnergeticSloth 5d ago
IWI is a decades old reputable arms manufacturer with military contracts, and their offerings including the X95, Tavor 7, and Galil ACE. It won't even be in the same ocean, let alone the same boat.
3
u/TescoValueSoup 5d ago
They literally had a mandatory safety recall on the Carmel because the firing pin blocker wasn't engaging properly.
Just like a chef, you're as good as the last plate you sent out. It doesn't matter what came before it.1
u/MostEnergeticSloth 5d ago
Due to a bad batch of parts affecting 1094 rifles 3 years ago... The problem was identified and rectified. Seems the chefs plates over the last 3 years haven't had any issues
Really doesn't sound the same as "we've fixed the issues here's the rifle" and immediately seeing issues.
0
u/TescoValueSoup 5d ago
I mean, sure? But your point was to say IWI isn't going to have issues due to their heritage and size, compared to a small operation like Brigade MFG.
I pointed out the big guys can have problems too, as a rebuttal to you saying not even the same boat let alone ocean.1
u/MostEnergeticSloth 5d ago
Because they're not.
The MK15 had glaring design/build issues that were partially addressed, and now they've sent out seemingly untested rifles. The carmel suffered from a batch of bad parts affecting an extremely small number of rifles relative to their production numbers. Not design/build failure. Any manufacturer can have a batch of bad parts. Even the SCAR has had a recall due to bad parts batch.

I’ve had my Carmel for 2 months now and zero issues , just putting that out there.

u/shapoopshoot 5d ago
not sure if anyone asked (I didn't catch your previous post if you made one either) - but was this NR Makasi the latest version with the "fixed" QC issues?
7
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
Yup! Tbf, they did fix all the cosmetic issues that were happening (like all the metal on metal shaving, etc).
That doesn't help with the rifle now being unable to function as a semi.
1
u/shapoopshoot 5d ago
yeah that's troubling. I posted on CGN - I wonder if polishing the bolt might help?
I've got the FDE on order, and I'm glad you guys that have yours now can give us some honest to goodness reporting back and see if some slight tuning/polishing/etc might be needed.
2
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
How would you recommend polishing the bolt? I can give that a shot if going through the rest of my rounds doesn't work.
1
u/shapoopshoot 5d ago
7
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
I actually spent last night cleaning the rifle and disassembling the bolt. Fingers crossed that it ends up working tomorrow.
0
u/Infinite_Price_3550 5d ago
When you say polishing do you just mean cleaning and oiling the BCG? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
2
u/shapoopshoot 5d ago
Actually polishing the bolt with something like Mother's
I've followed this how to guide on YouTube

They claimed all NR makasis have been fixed/ updated before shipping to Canada

u/Even-Somewhere-9554 5d ago
Yep. Tbh bad QC is what I feel about NR Makasi. A bunch of guys with CNC machines in garages. I hope you only got a lemon but seem like there are more lemons than limes

Did it still run like shit today?
2
u/CAFLoreMemes 4d ago
YUP! I ended up hitting 300 rounds and had the same issues. RDSC has been chill and is going to take a look at the rifle.
1
u/Oetter83 4d ago
That sucks. I think I might pull my pre-order tomorrow of the FDE and just wait till next summer to see what the consensus is
1
u/Glockinmytacklebox 4d ago
Aw man sorry to hear that bro. So disappointed so far, my pre order will probably be here in the next few weeks, might just cancel it and get the Stoeger coach gun with my $500 lol

u/GopherRebellion 5d ago
What ammo are you using?
3
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
55 grain 5.56. The guy on gunnuts was using 223
3
u/GopherRebellion 5d ago
What brand? I had a similar experience with my old x95. Switched ammo. No issues.
3
u/CAFLoreMemes 5d ago
PMC X-Tac, what brand did you switch to?
7
u/GopherRebellion 5d ago
Oh X-Tac is good stuff. Yeah its the gun then. I was using cheap ass Barnaul.

I don’t understand how the quality control is so bad when this rifle has been out in the USA for several years now. It’s not like this is the first production run.
3
u/Status_Ticket5044 5d ago
It's possible they make and sell maybe 200 a year to Americans that are somehow unaware that they have their choice of dozens and dozens and dozens of AR models. Suddenly they have orders for 2000. What could go wrong?
1
u/MostEnergeticSloth 5d ago
Frankly I'd be surprised if it was 200/yr. And of those I'd be surprised if split between them they saw more than a few thousand rounds in a year.

And people laughed at me when I said I was passing on this thing for being worried about stuff like this
1
u/Dill_Pickle_Tears 4d ago
Shame. Hopefully this is still just a disappointing blip in the initial run and things smooth out.
OP is this one of the MK-15+ with the 12” or 15” handguard? I know they were all held back to be fixed, but I’m curious
1
u/Mah_Buddy_Keith 4d ago
At this point I’m going to take the Airsoft Pill. At least I can use the damn thing, then.
1
u/ConstructionOk4528 5d ago
They said on the website that you gotta run it 200 rounds for the break in and before that it's normal for it to malfunction
2
u/CAFLoreMemes 4d ago
I went up to 300 rounds today and same issues. I returned the rifle to RDSC for them to take a look at it.

u/PruneObjective9044 4d ago
Not sure why anybody chose to buy this over the Carmel. IWI is known for reliability above all else.
-2
u/Otherwise_Rub_9515 5d ago
You bought a piece of shit gun from a garbage manufacturer and are surprised it sucks?

u/Eyeronick 5d ago
This should be at the surprise of nobody. Company claimed the fixed the first ones, not actually fixed. But we're super serious now guys, it's really fixed. Lol.
