What’s the $$ damage, though?

75

u/Penguinbotxv Apr 12 '26

700 canadian pesos

96

u/0672216 Apr 12 '26

Ngl, Was excited for this one to drop but 700+tax+shipping and it doesn’t even include a buffer tube or any other hardware…

Am I out of touch or is that fuckin nuts?? I was so down to buy one but now I’m not so sure

32

u/IPSC_Canuck Apr 12 '26

I’m with you on that. I’d have a difficult time putting a chassis on a rifle that’s worth almost twice what I paid for the rifle… that said! This looks awesome and it’s definitely something I’d buy once it comes down in price.

I wanted to get 50 CNC'd handguards similar to the NCstar ones, mlok on sides and picatinny on the top.

875 dollars a piece from a large, local company. That's called a "fuck off" quote, they don't even wanna do the work.

40 dollars from China.

Most likely the exact same quality and materials. I wouldn't doubt it if the Chinese ones were actually better.

These chassis are machined locally by a small manufacturer in Canada, which is why it can be made in the first place. From a larger manufacturer in Canada this would literally be about 5k to make, it's fucking absurd.

When you take all of this into consideration 700 is not that crazy.

17

u/FD4L Apr 12 '26

Its pretty steep. The mdt oryx is like $400 and it comes with a pistol grip and a fixed buttstock.

Mdt also has $700+ options but they offer more than this. The only place this stands out is the limited marked of solid SkS chassis'. The manufacturer knows were short on options and some dinks will inevitably overpay for it.

18

u/Hellfrozeover666 Apr 12 '26

I love MDT, have the Oryx and a few LSS Gen 2. But…Their prices are similar to this. The Oryx is $600. An LSS Gen 3 is $900 for comparable setup without a buttstock. $700 for a milled in Canada chassis doesn’t seem out of line.

5

u/FD4L Apr 13 '26

Damn, youre right. I haven't shopped from them in a while.

I bought a 15" ESS for my t1x on black friday a few years ago and it came in under $700 shipped.

I didn't know they increased the oryx price by like 50%. It was a great entry budget option, and its still a good chassis, but $600 dosent feel like entry level. I guess theyre just trying to keep up with everything else.

1

u/AresV92 Apr 13 '26

Does the Oryx fit an SKS? On their website it doesn't list it in the dropdown menu.

5

u/ImInHellFrozeOver Apr 13 '26

No MDT chassis fits the SKS. Just commenting that this new SKS chassis isn’t really overpriced, it’s in line with MDT pricing.

1

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 11d ago

No, even if it did it would weigh too much.

3

u/IPSC_Canuck Apr 13 '26

Yeah there’s an element of that for sure, but I see it more as trying to recover investment before something stupid happens. I totally get it.

I’m actually happy that it doesn’t come with a bunch of stuff other than the chassis. I’ve got lots of dusty furniture that would fit on it in my place right now. I really don’t need any more AR parts sitting around collecting dust. Plus I have the exact setup I’d use already, so everything would just transfer over.

The big issue is ammo. I refuse to shoot corrosive, i have a smaller quantity of non-corrosive kicking around, but I never bothered to reload for my SKS. It just wasn’t worth it. I got a set of dies with a giant box of reloading stuff I bought off a co-worker, but other than that I’d have to start from scratch, and would it really be worth it?

All to shoot a platform that i’ve always been somewhat underwhelmed with regardless of improvements.

5

u/0672216 Apr 12 '26

Exactly. The oryx is a complete chassis system. Everything is in the box. I don’t need to go source a buffer tube, end plate, stock, grip etc.

I really want to support local Canadian companies, especially those that cater to us gun guys and gals, but I’m real fucking tired of being gouged left and right.

1

u/Cortexian0 Apr 14 '26

It boggles my mind that people still don't understand economies of scale.

MDT is making and selling far more Oryx chassis than this SKS chassis. That allows them to bring price per unit down and include other value-added parts.

1

u/gspotcowboy Apr 15 '26

I was going to argue that it's high for a bare tactical chassis, but I added up what I would have spent on a Midwest chassis/guard for a PC9 I formerly owned and it wasn't much cheaper. And they have scale.

3

u/ActCompetitive1171 Apr 12 '26

I'd have to think that just because of scale it increases the cost to some degree right?

3

u/Canadian-gun-nut Apr 13 '26

Not out of touch at all

2

u/LilCamCan Apr 12 '26

Absolutely fucking nuts. Money means nothing nowadays.

22

u/WonkyTusky Apr 12 '26

Tna chassis is almost identical and i picked one up for $350 canadian pesos

9

u/Hellfrozeover666 Apr 12 '26

Well, this one looks much better than the TNA one to my eyes at least Also those weren’t new production TNA chassis. I believe they were all varying levels of rejects that were originally sold by Matador as the Sabertooth around 2015 or so. Hard to compare old stock rejects that were produced a decade ago. There’s been a bit of inflation in the last ten years

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

This one doesn't have the gap between the dust cover and the chassis however, and the mlok slots are a better choice imo.

Thats not to rag on the TNA chassis, I have it and its alright, theres just a few things I would change.

3

u/BrotherLefthand Apr 12 '26

The block prevents fielding stripping of the rifle.

1

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 11d ago

TNA chassis is incomplete, needs filler plates, 3D printer blank covers, etc. it’s like a prototype?

1

u/WonkyTusky 11d ago

No its complete

1

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 11d ago

There's the "gap filler for SKS chassis" and also "SKS Chassis Plates SKS" that need to be installed to make it a finished product. Not to mention paint is blemished too.

1

u/WonkyTusky 11d ago

Theres different types available. I bought the “B” grade which came with everything ready to be installed. Not belmished. If you buy lower grade ones they are less finished

2

u/buttercastle69 Apr 13 '26

Don't know why this was downvoted so much haha

-14

u/Aggravating_Button99 Apr 12 '26

Thats only approx $475 bucks U.S, and way Carney is running our economy, that U.S. cost will drop.

13

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

I wasn't going to be the one to post this. There are more factors than politics affecting the CAD price. The U.S. is most definitely going to get more bang for their buck.

Sorry guys, but turning our back on Canadian made goods will only make the problem worse. Our manufacturing ecosystem is not in good shape relative to our neighbors to the south.

46

u/RolandDirlewanger Apr 12 '26

700 man tf? I really want a different look from my ati stock but it does everything I want already for a fraction of these metal chassis.

4

u/Quirky-Delivery-3236 Apr 13 '26

It really doesn’t you can’t mount a optic on it the Fab defence is the best SKS stock the ATI has a shit grip that isn’t big enough for my hand and my hand rubs against it the archangel stock is better

19

u/__phil1001__ Apr 12 '26

How does the scope mount? It's sad we are left with customizing SKS out of desperation

7

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

The one pictured is mounted on the supplied mini PIC accessory rail. I suggest using a one piece rail for any higher powered optics.

1

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 11d ago

Which one piece rails are compatible?

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North 9d ago

Our prototype used the Wartak

1

u/No-Transportation843 Apr 12 '26

The scope pictured is getting spent brass flung into it every single shot fired.

2

u/Hour-Wallaby9515 Apr 12 '26

my scope on my build and no it is not, you are welcome to join me at the range anytime yo

1

u/No-Transportation843 Apr 13 '26

Where is the brass going

1

u/Hour-Wallaby9515 Apr 13 '26

There is slo-mo video on their instagram highlights that shows case ejection clearly

29

u/tyler111762 Resident Certified Millennial Punk Apr 12 '26

Damn. That fucks.

12

u/dgod40 Apr 12 '26

Looks great but too pricey for me. Kinda like the hush holster chassis.

41

u/Mirin_Gains Apr 12 '26

Guys... 700 for machined aluminum in Canada isn't too bad. This is what is costs to make things locally.

13

u/Spiritual_Exit5726 Apr 12 '26

Fine but its for a godamn sks. Its not a thousand dollar rifle we're talking about. And theres still $400 of shit to add on to this

21

u/uber_poutine Apr 12 '26

If you wanted to spin up tooling and start to produce a comparable semi-auto rifle in an intermediate cartridge with a milled steel receiver, how much do you think it would retail at?

Just 'cause it's milsurp and a government paid most of that cost already doesn't mean the value isn't there, especially with the supply limitations we're seeing.

This is the unfortunate state of the market as a result of legislation. If you don't want to put your SKS in a chassis, no one is making you do it.

16

u/CurlyWurly61 Apr 12 '26

This is one of those things where I would be upset that its $790 after taxes (ontario) and need to pay shipping, buy a buttstock and grip separately ( so lets call it $1000)

BUT

I know these are going to sell out and there is no reason for you guys to lower the prices

23

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

I feel your pain guys. When you look at the economics of the Canadian market, you see our input costs are high, and our market is small so demand is low. (Relatively speaking)

Please follow and like our Instagram for special offers. You won't be disappointed.

8

u/WasPremeditatedOK Apr 12 '26

Does the top aluminum handguard touch the gas / piston system? Or is it like a free float design?

7

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

Nothing on the gas piston is fixed to the hand guard, but the sheet metal pinned to the tube can butt against it. There is a user configurable mounting lug that installs in the front as well.

8

u/LananasCourageux Apr 12 '26

Why not an LAR15 magwell?

8

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Next step. We need this to go before we can release niche variants.

6

u/Nano112 Apr 12 '26

What's the weight change from wood to this chassis?

8

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

The Chassis, rails, and mounting accessories come in at 980 grams.

Thank you. Our friends at CRC have a no Bubba, field strippable chassis. We chose to lean the other way for those that like to build, fit, and tinker. All feedback is welcome, and will drive future design iterations.

1

u/AresV92 Apr 13 '26

CRC one is sold out at $450 currently so they must be doing something right. Thanks for letting me know about that option. I'll be following both yours and the CRC one.

6

u/Elbro_16 Apr 12 '26

Can I use a AR mag adapter with this chassis?

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Not sure yet. We will update on Instagram when we know.

4

u/Elbro_16 Apr 13 '26

A feel like at this point it’s almost a must for any chassis in Canada

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Does this one fit the magazines with the release latch?  My TNA one does not, which sucks because thats all my magazines.  This does look better over all compared to the that one.

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Release Latch? We have tested with stock swing mag, and duck bill mags. (Tapco) works well with both. We are looking into the other variants as well.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

5

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

On order for testing. We'll let you know.

3

u/Tk-Lea Apr 12 '26

I think the price is fine if the quality is there, would of loved to see an intergrated optic rail with the chassis.

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

There have been many internal discussions regarding mounting to the frame vs mounting to the action, regarding holding zero.

The rail you speak of does in fact exist, but there is hesitation to release due to the above.

3

u/Tk-Lea Apr 12 '26

Good to know it was talked about, Id like to see your option if it can hold zero well enough. POI shift should be expected in any removal part.

3

u/RustyJoots Apr 12 '26

Looks pretty good nicely done

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Ty.

3

u/Neat_Imagination2503 Apr 12 '26

Looks cool but the pricing is insane for it

3

u/dke783 Apr 13 '26

I'm obsessing over that scope positioning... Will it allow stripper clip top loading?

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 13 '26

In this configuration, it indeed accepts stripper clips. No casings hit the scope on range day.

3

u/Evilstib Apr 13 '26

Is there like a mega thread for all of the options to modify an SKS?

3

u/Aggravating-Spray820 Apr 13 '26

They could’ve at least given the A2 grip like there’s billions of those around

3

u/Saucy__Intruder Apr 13 '26

I'll give you $50 for the STL

10

u/th3badwolf_1234 Apr 12 '26

700$ chassis for a 299$ rifle, nice!

38

u/dv20bugsmasher Apr 12 '26

If you see any decent sks going for 299 can you tell me where?

10

u/th3badwolf_1234 Apr 12 '26

Fun thing is that the gun stores haven't had new sks in decades, that 799$ sks? Yeah, they paid 150 or so for it.

7

u/buttercastle69 Apr 13 '26

Weren't those unfired French ticklers a relatively new shipment/purchase?

0

u/arthor Apr 13 '26

-4

u/th3badwolf_1234 Apr 13 '26

I have, my comment is about the actual value of an sks, not what people are paying for it.

It's a garbage gun with a garbage barrel but it's one if the few semi auto left, I get it.

0

u/Cortexian0 Apr 14 '26

This may blow your mind, but VALUE is literally what people are willing to pay for something. You may be confusing value and cost. Did you know that it doesn't actually cost Ford anywhere near $80,000 for a new F150? People still buy them for that.

8

u/topspeed5555 Apr 12 '26

Don’t care. Will buy.

4

u/Professional_Chef379 Apr 12 '26

I've never wanted an SKS until right this moment

4

u/EscapeChance823 Apr 12 '26

You have my support! At least its not 3D printed Does it fit the SKS-D with Ak mags?

4

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Not sure yet. Going to meet with some owners of AK mag variants in the coming weeks.

2

u/Horilka Apr 13 '26

2

u/EscapeChance823 Apr 12 '26

Please keep us posted! 🙏

2

u/Lee-oswald Apr 13 '26

Damn, cool, but at 700 Bucks I’d rather just have another sks

2

u/FedInformant Apr 13 '26

Really nice. On the pricey side though. Should include buffer tube butt stock and pistol grip for pete sake

When your in a price gouging competition and your opponent is anyone making SKS parts for the canadian market

2

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 13 '26

I assure you that manufacturing did not set the retail price.

I spoke with our competitors today and they should have more stock on the market shortly. That's a good thing for everyone.

0

u/Water-Foul Apr 13 '26

You are out to lunch

2

u/BrotherLefthand Apr 12 '26

Lost me at the cost when it doesn't include accessories. At least the hush holster included a folding buttstock and a pistol grip.

1

u/the_crooked_north The Crooked North Apr 12 '26

Didn't realize Hush was compatible with AR parts.

Figured there might be a person or two with some AR parts they can no longer use sitting in their safe.

5

u/BrotherLefthand Apr 13 '26

You should have made it AR mag compatible for this price.

1

u/ImInHellFrozeOver Apr 13 '26

You do realize there’s more to making an SKS run AR mags than just the chassis? You need to mill the bolt and receiver as well. If their first chassis was AR compatible then it wouldn’t work for the much larger market of unmodified SKS’s. Hopefully this chassis sells well and they come out with an AR compatible one later to meet the minority’s needs as well. The more options on the market the better.

1

u/BrotherLefthand Apr 13 '26

You understand an SKS that has been made AR compatible is still able to run the factory magazine?

Just because the stock could accept AR magazines doesn't mean the owner has to have a milled rifle. However, it would allow an easy path forward for someone wanting to make that happen.

Looking at their design, it looks like a bit of engineering could offer both. The biggest issue would be ensuring the modifications work together. Getting a hical adapter to run in an SKS requires a bit of tweaking even if the machining is done well.

2

u/Spiritual_Exit5726 Apr 12 '26

I'll never understand turning a $300 gun ($800 now) and slapping a thousand dollars of equipment on it to make it a $300 gun you paid 2k for
