Honest question: have you ever had to fend off an aggressive bear in Canada? (hunting or otherwise) What happened,​ and what worked for your response? ​​

.22 is, functionally, just a single pellet of #4 buckshot.

If #4 buck can kill it, so can a .22.

Now sure, you have a much better chance with #4 buckshot because each trigger pull gets you 25 of them at the same time. But it's not actually more powerful on a per-projectile basis.

The kinetic energy tho, is very very different. 25 or most of the 25 pellets all together killed the bear. Not 1 of the 25.

A relevant comparison would be 25 single shot 22 shooting at the bear at same time. I would say, ya maybe you’ll have a better chance.
