Here is my collection of shotgun inserts.
For the record I have only tried the 9mm, 22lr and .38 out of the 357. All of which I was pleasantly surprised by. Obviously they have limitations and are only good to about 25 yards. I’ve been hesitant to try the higher pressure 45lc and 357. Does anyone have experience with this or can recommend a single shot capable of handling such high pressure?

I've used a few of these over the years. At first, they seemed like a viable idea, but the more I used them, the less I liked them. Bigger centrefire calibers just felt sketchy

Personally I would only get the 18” or longer inserts. Even then it will never be a precision shooter out of a single shot shotgun but you can probably get ok groupings under 50 yards. The smaller ones aren’t accurate enough to justify any serious use outside of plinking. Just my 2 cents.

I’m starting to get pretty good with the 11 inch 9mm insert for out to 50 yards. Definitely not trying to do precision shooting with them , I have a real rifle for that. Lol They are just a lot of fun and could be useful in a pinch as my more accurate rifle doesn’t double as a bird gun. I’d say with practice at appropriate distances the 11 inch 9mm is as accurate as the nine mm revolvers I have shot so to me, that’s not too bad.
The 22lr insert has a bit more of a learning curve to get accuracy but I’m getting better with it. Ammo definitely makes a difference with these inserts also

So you just slide them into the barrel to rechamber your 12 gauge?

Pretty much, works best on break actions, not that 'best' is very good in this context

yeah, these ones are for a 20ga but that's the idea.
based on all the comments though it seems to not work that well

It is absolutely imperative to get the rifled inserts and at least 6 inches in length. The short line inserts that a lot of people are talking about are smoothbore and only 3 inches . I’ve tried them , they are horrible

I have a 9mm and a 357mag/.38spl insert which are about as long as a regular shotgun shell meaning the barrel is like 1/2” at most. You get no accuracy at all, but it’s still kinda fun. .357 is loud and just as inaccurate, and the case sometimes gets stuck but it shoots .38spl pretty good with no issue. Out of a Dominion arms backpacker 12” beak action

Ya , I could see that. Since mine are 6 and 11 inch with rifling they are not too bad once you figure out the aiming. They definitely have big limitations though past 25 yards

ive fired the 357 in a beat up old cooey 84 plenty of times with no issue. if you are really worried about 45 long colt you can buy cowboy loads which are lower pressure and an unjacketed projectile

Thanks for the advice, I’m looking at a used H&M that has a 20ga and 30 30 barrel. I’m sure that could handle it

I've been toying with the idea of a .22 insert for my 12g backpacker 2. Any thoughts?

Chaszel makes a 11 and 18 inch rifled insert. They take some getting used to but you will be able to obtain short range accuracy with lots of practice. Of all my inserts the 22lr is the most accurate.

The good thing about these tubes is s you can use any rimfire with no worries about cycling issues ( lol obviously) but some are better than others . I shoot a ton of Remington thunderbolt , it’s not great but it’s cheap . if you want to be more serious with accuracy CCI standard velocity seems to work the best of what I’ve tried. I’ve successfully harvested rabbit with CCI SGB also so I’d say they are pretty good. I just have to stress that this is always within 25 yards. These inserts are going to start sucking pretty bad at anything past that no matter the ammo

Each insert seems to behave differently...I've only used chaszel and 2 shortlane adapters ...
Using a Chinese copy of a H&R 12 guage ... Using 22lr, 22 wmr, 9 mm, 38 spl, and 45 acp were all fairly safe I had a few 9 mm primers that got really black after firing.
.357 was very sketchy as the primers were not looking remotely normal after firing (only used AE .357 HP) ...
Haven't tried long colt ...
As for shotguns capable of higher pressures I don't think there are many of those left that were made by H&R
